How do clairvoyants know things??

Homer2 · 14/04/2026 13:45

I have never believed in this, I saw one once just for fun at my aunties house and she wasn’t great. She did say a few things that were accurate, but I put this down to being guesses or general vague things that would be relevant to the majority of people.

However, recently my friend went to one. She recently lost her dad and her partner. Without telling the clairvoyant anything, she knew how her partner died and what his name was. She mentioned my friends dad blowing kisses in a weird way, with the palm of his hand instead of his fingers, which is something he did used to do. How would she know these things??? I don’t honestly believe in it, but can’t understand how she’d know such specific things

A thousand years ago we didn't have a clue about sound waves. Even now we think we know about them, whose to say we have everything right, especially as we can't even see them. For many years we thought the earth was flat.
It's important to keep an open mind.

Yes, once we thought the Earth was flat and now we are 100% certain it isn't. Anyone who now insists the earth is flat doesn't have an open mind, they have a non-functioning mind.

We don't know all the secrets of the Universe, but we know what sound waves are. You don't need to have an open mind about sound waves.

SeekOIt · 15/04/2026 16:51

The majority of them are nonsense however i went to one who was spookily accurate. A lot of folk are too small minded to even consider that something exists that we have no concept of though.

ThatCyanCat · 15/04/2026 16:54

Also remember that over time, if you want to believe, you'll change your recollection without even realising it. I saw this happen in real time on here once. A woman was convinced she had entered a time slip on her way back to her holiday let and as the conversation went on, she started changing various details that suggested she actually just got a bit lost in an unfamiliar area. Stuff like: the first time she told the story, she said she'd made that journey at least once before. A couple of pages later, as people suggested she just hadn't known the area very well, she started saying that she'd actually made the journey every day of thr holiday prior to that. The complexity of the journey and other things changed and eventually even when someone put contradicting lines she'd written right by each other, she just refused to accept it. I don't think she was intentionally lying, she just really wanted to believe she entered a time slip rather than just got a bit lost on holiday.

There really is a reason all these stories about unbelievably accurate and specific readings that couldn't possibly be coincidence happened in the distant past, and people don't recall the 500 wrong or very ambiguous predictions that were made as well.

Ha, yes. that's what my DH says aswell, but it was so profound and real and not a dream and unless it happens to you personally I'm unable to convince you....not that I'm trying to....it's just my experience that's all

I don't think anyone is trying to dismiss your experience, but to explain it.

Something weird happened. You heard a man's voice and there wasn't anyone there. It was real. You felt it. I 100% believe this happened.

I don't think either you or I know why it happened, though. I believe there will be a rational explanation, but I can't prove there will be.

It's not open-minded, though (and I'm not accusing you of this) to believe it must be otherworldly or psychic or supernatural before completely interrogating the rational explanations for it. If there are many recorded examples of hearing voices in a medical context, especially in a meditative or waking state, then that's surely the most likely explanation.

It's still weird and powerful and profound. And it wasn't a dream. But how would the experience of an auditory hallucination in your brain feel different to a spooky voice calling you?

I don't disagree with you ....and it may well not be supernatural in that case..... but I just really hope it was :) :) lol

@OctopusFriend My Mother was very superstitious and she and I are very similar as is one of my sisters. Just good at reading people. She said never use your intuition for bad things as it’s wrong.

PrudenceDictates · 15/04/2026 17:57

A guy really freaked out once because I said he was a computer programmer and was spot on. His hands, his hobbies, his manner, the way he dressed, his glasses it was all such a give away.

Ah, @PensionMention was this around 1985ish in the Southeast of England? May have been my DH, if so! He was the archetypal geeky nerd, way before it was cool.
Rubbish dresser, glasses, the lot. Computer whizz.
He had that exact experience with a pub psychic. His friends had to point out that it really wasn’t a difficult call!

My own experience was even less impressive. White Feathers psychic centre in Edinburgh, 1992. The medium was very pleased with herself telling me I was pregnant… I was nine months gone!
I nearly cringed myself inside out when she then went on to throw all sorts of stuff at me, none of which was relevant or familiar.

While in the depths of postnatal sleep deprivation, I had an incidence of sleep paralysis. It was absolutely terrifying. I woke to find I couldn't move, like something was sitting on me, and I could sense an evil black presence to my left, looking at me. As weird coincidence had it, I'd read something about SP not long before, and I remembered that you could sync your brain and body back to normality by moving your eyes left and right. I did this and the awful sensation disappeared. But If I hadn't already known what it was, I'd absolutely have believed that something otherworldly had come to terrorise me.

It really was! Even knowing about SP didn't stop me feeling proper freaked out, and a bit scared to go to sleep in case it happened again.

I bet you were. Did you speak to a GP or anyone? You had a little baby as well!

ThatCyanCat · 15/04/2026 20:11

I used to experience sleep paralysis quite frequently, including the sense of a frightening presence sitting on the bed and then on me, and hallucinating a fire in the room (both very common when it happens). I can absolutely understand why people used to think it was a visiting demon. Totally understandable. But it's not.

I've also had auditory hallucinations, including voices, when dropping off to sleep; one time it was just a woman screaming in my ear suddenly and woke me with an absolute start! Unpleasant but yeah, that's all it is.

That sounds awful, and genuine commiserations to those of you who have suffered. 💐
It would freak me out!
Is there treatment/way of managing it?

Ahwig · 15/04/2026 20:47

My father died 18 years ago when there was little to no social media. I went to see a medium about 5 months after he died. I expected some cold reading and wasn’t sure what to expect. A couple of things blew me away. One was my earliest memory of me and my dad and I had told absolutely told no one ever about that. They also knew something very very personal about a domestic situation that they couldn’t possibly have guessed in a million years. There were some general things that you probably could guess like having a lit candle near his photo. My dad was atheist and didn’t believe in heaven or that anything was there after you die. So I took it as a way of my dad saying he’s was ok and that gave me a lot of comfort.

OctopusFriend · 15/04/2026 20:53

I'm glad that it gave you comfort, @Ahwig . I think when we lose loved ones, we look for peace and reassurance.

Nah. Waited to see if it happened again (it didn't), googled it a bit, otherwise carried on.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/04/2026 22:45

On the back of this thread I did a mini cold reading on a colleague today, who was utterly convinced that these charlatans have a gift, in order to show her how they work. I think a lot of her, she is much younger than me and quite naive so I really was trying to help her and to see if cold reading really is that easy.

Totally backfired, she now thinks I have a gift that I am denying!

Mama2many73 · 15/04/2026 23:03

Ive seen 2 . The first one I was last minute as someone else dropped out. I was the only one who didn't work at a hospital, my name wasn't given ahead if time. Obviously there was generic stuff but there was also VERY specific stuff including ivf which NO ONE knew about.
The second one was booked by my otger sister, only her name given and she isnt on SM. Again some personal info which seemed to hit home and some to generic stuff. However she did give my dsis a VERY SPECIFIC piece of info that relates to all of us that could not be guessed. It was the most weird statement but 100% accurate for us, think something along the lines of 'uour mam is talkibg about a sunhat for a pig, a real hat for a real pig?'. Woman couldn't work it out but my dsis just said yes I totally understand this'
I totally agree there are charlatans and there are many who cold read /guess, but personally I've seen a few things that definitely make me question

OK - but why would anybody waste their one chance to speak to their darling daughters by saying "Tell them this! That'll prove it's me!" instead of, I dunno, passing on a family recipe or checking that your inheritance worked out as planned? It's almost as if The Afterlife exists purely to validate the claims of mediums (if you believe in all that).

Given that most of these spirits are supposed to have foresight, you'd expect them to be sharing winning lottery numbers, investment tips and sports results, wouldn't you?

How do clairvoyants know things??

78 perc of Irish adults have a parent or grandparent called Mary. So if I said is there a Mary in the audience who has recently lost someone close. I would be reaching out to a large cohort of women 50 to 60 plus years old in my audience called Mary. At 50 to 60 some of those are going to have lost a parent or older sibling recently.
You can work on generic conversations and pick up on tells as you go along. Your mother, Mary, is saying she forgives you. Did you have unresolved issues before she died? No. I think these are issues when you were young. She always loved you whatever you did.
Every relationship over a lifetime has some issues at some stage.
This is how it works. They can be very good at it but it is just a skill in reading people and knowing generic liklihoods.

Goatsarebest · 16/04/2026 00:24

And you can add in confirmation bias where you only remember and focus in on the details you interpreted as being correct and forget all the not so accurate stuff.
