AIBU to tell dd she is likely to grow more?

Dd just turned 13 and is about 5.1ft. (158cm) She hasn't had a period yet. AIBU to tell that she is likely still gaining in height until she starts her period? Or is this some 'old wive's tale' (ageist term but YKWIM)? I hear that girls grow the most and fastest in the weeks and months leading up to their first period.

Was this true or false for you or your dd??

She is sensitive she is the shortest in her group of friends at school and at hobbies outside of school.

Awwww - I get this, as a 5’1” adult. Started my periods at 11 and didn’t grow another inch after that. Not really ‘short’ at primary but just didn’t grow as everyone else shot up.

I’m from a tall family as well, and everyone said “you’ll catch up…” and I was gutted not to.

I’d suggest not telling your DD that she’ll grow more because she might not and if she’d like to be taller, it can be hard.

Sounds odd but I only really accepted being ‘short’ when I started work and there was a phenomenal senior manager who was the same height as me. She was brilliant at her role, assertive, strong, and had real presence. Might be good for your daughter to find some shorter role models - people are so much more than their height BUT society has always seen a taller height as the optimum IMO and some people do treat us as ‘cute’ and tend to infantilise us, which can affect confidence.

Tableforjoan · 15/04/2026 08:24

I don’t think it’s true. My girls started their periods at 8 and 10 and both still growing, Now 11 and 15.

More likely just pure random odd genetics. My mother is 5ft I’m 5ft5. My older daughter is already 5ft5 my youngest nearly 5ft. My mil to throw in that side is also around 5ft. The men all range from around 5ft8 to 6ft odd.

Can’t say being short seems to ever of affected my mother or mil apart from short jokes unfortunately.

StroppyBulldog · 15/04/2026 08:34

My daughter had to see an endocrinologist due to early puberty, and they told us that girls who start their periods earlier will have an earlier height growth and then will grow slower but longer than girls who start their periods around 11 or 12.
Starting periods is not about how much you weigh. My daughter is now 11 and still only weighs 5 and a half stone, as I always believed that girls didn't start their periods until they weighed around 7 stone.

Deadringer · 15/04/2026 13:54

As a general rule children usually reach at least their parents height. This can be skewed if one parent is tall and one short though. What height are you op? What size shoe does your dd take? The feet seem to stop growing first, at 13 my tall dd had size 7 feet, and my smallest dd was just a size 3.

AlwaysLookOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 15/04/2026 14:07

I'm 5'3", DH is 5'7". DD was less than five foot when she left school but 5'3 by 18. 2DS are surprisingly both 6 foot tall, both grew until 17/18.

PrayForPlagues · 15/04/2026 14:12

I started my period at 14, left school at 17 and 4 foot 11. I had a random growth spurt and grew 4 inches at 19 while at uni! My feet never caught up tho, I’ve been a size 2 since I was 13.

angelcake20 · 15/04/2026 14:48

I stopped growing at 11, taller than most at 5’4”. Periods didn’t start until 13 and everyone steadily went past me.

AzureLurker · 15/04/2026 14:59

5'1" is not that small at 13, many of my pupils at that age are not taller than me and I'm 5'2. For reference I didn't start periods till 15. I think you need to be 7 stone for your body to think you are ready. What does concern me is obsession with height and thinking that someone is less than if they aren't considered tall.

Interesting, did your dd have a growth spurt after her first period? Do you remember how long that intense growth spurt went on for?

Yes - it all really happened after her first period. She started around Halloween (age 14.5) and by the following summer had grown 3 inches (5ft 1 - 5ft 4). Steadily got up to 5ft 6 by age 19.

Sennelier1 · 15/04/2026 18:43

I grew very fast when I was a child, they called me "the tall one", was always with the 3 tallest of the class in the gym line-up. Then at around 12 I started secundary school, got my first period, stopped growing. By the end of secondary school I was one of the 3 shortest girls of my class. I'm now 5.4.

Meant to say she started her period when she was 14.

TheIceBear · 15/04/2026 19:14

I’m 5ft and started my period around 12 and stopped growing soon after . I remember having a growth spurt around the time of my period and being as tall as some of my friends who are much taller than me. Does it actually matter ? I love my height never had an issue with it . Never had an issues attracting men or anything else (apart from reaching things in supermarkets sometimes I won’t lie).

You certainly don’t need to be 7st to start your periods neither of my girls where when they did and nor was I.

In fact when I got pregnant with my oldest child I was only just in the 8st section and had periods for many years prior.

SorryNotSorry00 · 16/04/2026 03:32

I find it funny that I read your post about girls supposedly growing until they get their period -I heard this for the first time just a couple of weeks ago and was shocked because it certainly wasn’t true in my case!

I got my first period at 12.5 years of age and can say I was definitely growing until 17! I remember clearly having a growth spurt at 15 and a half because my clothes were suddenly short and I appeared slimmer even though I hadn’t lost weight. I was 5 ft 2 at the most when I was your daughter’s age but ended up being 5 ft 7. Again, it was clear because my best friend in school was taller than me when we were 13 and her final height was 5 ft 3.

Hope this helps.

WorriedRelative · 13/04/2026 14:03

My feet stopped growing at size 3 aged 11, my height continued to grow until I was 18, I am 5ft8, gained a shoe size during my 40s though!!!

Do you mean your feet were a size 3 until recent times and you are 5 ft 8? It seems like a very small foot for your height.

I started my period at 11, and was 5ft 2 at the time. I'm still 5ft 2 now. My best friend at school was the same height as me, didn't come on her period until 13/14. I don't think it's height related. Genetics most likely.

BibbityBobbityBuggerit · 16/04/2026 18:38

She will carry on growing (how much, who knows ...) but growth pretty much stops 2 to 2 1/2 years after the start of her periods.
