AIBU to tell dd she is likely to grow more?

Dd just turned 13 and is about 5.1ft. (158cm) She hasn't had a period yet. AIBU to tell that she is likely still gaining in height until she starts her period? Or is this some 'old wive's tale' (ageist term but YKWIM)? I hear that girls grow the most and fastest in the weeks and months leading up to their first period.

Was this true or false for you or your dd??

I always thought it was roughly 2 years after you started your first. That you stopped growing. I think that stands for me and my daughters roughly.

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 13/04/2026 13:52

I was suddenly eyeball to eyeball with my mum at age 12 1/2, one month before my first period. So I would have been about 5 foot 3. I ended up 5 foot 5 1/2.

I don’t think I grew after age 15. So a growth spurt just before the first period then another 2 years of slower growth sounds right,

wishfulthinking25 · 13/04/2026 13:55

I was 5ft 7 in year 6 and didn’t grow anymore, I didn’t start my period until I was 13..

WorriedRelative · 13/04/2026 13:58

I carried on growing for several years after my first period, I even gained an inch during upper sixth form and then stopped growing.

I was the tallest girl in my class at primary, then my feet stopped growing around year 7, and my friends all overtook me in height in year 8 and 9. My Mum stopped growing at 11, I was already taller than her so we assumed I had stopped growing around year 8, then I started growing again after most of my friends had stopped.

I had quite a few things bought on the basis I had stopped growing and they would last (eg a bike, and an expensive waterproof coat) that were hopelessly outgrown and had to be passed to my sister.

I grew a lot after my periods started.

I started my periods at 14, I think I was probably about 5'4 at the time. I grew several inches at 15-16 and don't think I stopped growing completely until I was about 17-18, at 5'9.

How big are her feet? As someone else said, the clues were there - I had size 8 feet by the time I was 12 and reckon I couldn't have been more than about 5'2 at that age. They felt so out of proportion at the time, it never occurred to me that the rest of me would catch up!

My feet stopped growing at size 3 aged 11, my height continued to grow until I was 18, I am 5ft8, gained a shoe size during my 40s though!!!

TreeDudette · 13/04/2026 15:09

My DD is 15 and has had period for about a year. I think she is still growing. She;s about 5ft 4 now.

aredrosegrewup · 13/04/2026 15:11

Is there a specific issue with her being short? None of you will know if she'll grow any more? I'm 5ft so I'm just wondering why it is an issue to reassure her about?

BauhausOfEliott · 13/04/2026 15:31

She's of more or less average height for a 13-year-old girl and nobody can possibly say how much she'll grow. Periods are irrelevant; I only had one 'growth spurt' as a child and it happened when was about 13 - two years after I started my periods and three years after I started needing a bra.

I haven't grown an inch since my 14th birthday - I was a short pre-teen, then an average height 14-year-old, and then a short adult.

Not that it matters, people don't tend to judge women much on height like they do with men. I'm barely an inch taller than your daughter and it's really not an issue, ever.

Oh I didn't mean it would be the case for everyone, just that it might give some clues, it did in my case!

That's great though, quite helpful I imagine! It was a nightmare trying to find shoes to fit me back then as most shops didn't sell anything bigger than a size 7. Fortunately it's easier these days, though some places still don't! 😀

Ladyzfactor · 13/04/2026 15:51

I got my period early at ten, so I definitely grew after that. However I stopped growing around thirteen and am still pretty short.

UnderThePressure · 13/04/2026 15:55

I have 2 DDs, both had 1st periods around 12.
Oldest followed the wives tales, she grew quite a lot shortly before and was about 5'4 when she had her 1st period. She is now 5'7 as an adult.
With 2nd DD she was about 5'4 too but grew constantly throughout. She didn't slow down and is now 5'11 at 18 and still growing (she is measured every 3 months in hospital).
Although my Dad was 6'5 and my brother is 6'4 so she gets her height from here. I'm 5'5😂

Legomania · 13/04/2026 15:55

My sister was several years older than I was starting her periods and she has ended up considerably taller than me.

kscarpetta · 13/04/2026 16:01

I started my period at 12 and did stop growing then - I'm about 5ft tall and honestly my height has never been an issue in my life.
Other than sometimes having to get clothes altered and needing to ask people to reach things for me in supermarkets 😆
On the plus side I can still buy kids clothes and shoes...

WildDenimDuck · 13/04/2026 16:03

Girls usually stop growing about 2 years after their first period. So yes, I’d think she’d grow more considering she hasn’t had her first one yet!

Purpledaisybug · 13/04/2026 16:10

I started my period at 11 and stopped growing at 12. I'm 5ft. so I was quite tall for my age at the point. My mum is only 4ft 10 though so I was never going to be huge!!

Foxytights · 13/04/2026 16:41

I read that, on average, a girl grows two and a half inches taller in the couple of years following her first period, then she will stop growing.
(This theory has been borne out in my own experience ie: me, my friends and family, my daughter and her friends.)

zingally · 13/04/2026 16:53

My puberty was very back to front. My period came quite a while before boobs and hair.
I was very nearly 12 when my period started, and perhaps grew another 2 inches after that, but am still only 5"3!

Goldengirl123 · 13/04/2026 18:34

Why do you feel the need to have this conversation with her?

LadyEnemy · 13/04/2026 19:13

Hayxfever · 13/04/2026 12:22

I was 4foot 11 at 12 started my periods at 12, shoe size 3, im now 39 and still 4foot 11 and still a size 3 in shoes.

Same for my DD. She’s 14 now and people keep telling me she’ll still grow, but I don’t think so. She seems tiny.

I’m only 5 foot 2 so didnt expect her to be huge, but didnt expect her to be shorter than me either.

Didimum · 13/04/2026 19:16

It's a myth. The biggest predictor of height is your and and her dad's height.

Earlandmrsgrey · 13/04/2026 19:40

I was always tall. Throughout the entirety of my 4 years in junior school I was the tallest child, including the boys. By the time I reached secondary school I had size 9 feet. My feet stopped at that but I just kept growing upwards. I was just over 6ft by the time my periods started, shortly before I turned 15. I eventually stopped just shy of 6'2". I was very, very thin before puberty and I think my low BMI was probably the reason I started relatively late. After that my hips just got bigger and bigger and bigger!

Yabu. Girls grow until around age 16, it doesn’t matter when their first period is ffs as girls get their period between 8 and 18.

BewareoftheLambs · 13/04/2026 19:58

I started my periods at 12 and then continued to grow until about 18.

My sister and I have the same parents but she is about 7 inches taller than me and started her period about 4 years later 🤔

mondaytosunday · 13/04/2026 21:07

It is normal for girls to grow another 2-4 inches after they get their period. It is also normal to stop growing (my DD grew less than an inch, stopping at 5’ 6.5”). It is likely your DD will grow a bit, but you can’t promise she will. My DD is several inches shorter than me.
