AIBU to tell dd she is likely to grow more?

Dd just turned 13 and is about 5.1ft. (158cm) She hasn't had a period yet. AIBU to tell that she is likely still gaining in height until she starts her period? Or is this some 'old wive's tale' (ageist term but YKWIM)? I hear that girls grow the most and fastest in the weeks and months leading up to their first period.

Was this true or false for you or your dd??

My sister and I have the same parents but she is about 7 inches taller than me and started her period about 4 years later 🤔

That’s why it’s called a predictor.

Genetics plays the biggest role in a person's final adult height. The best predictor of height is parents' height or, more specifically, midparental height. You can calculate midparental height by adding the mother's and father's height in inches. Add 5 more inches for boys or subtract 5 inches for girls. Divide by two. Most children will reach an adult height within 2 inches of mid-parental height.

I was one of the shortest in my class, until I had a growth spurt / started my period at 16 and am now 5'7". I wasn't skinny or fat, just late developer.

BlueMum16 · 13/04/2026 21:21

My DD started periods at 10 and kept growing until 15.

greyweek · 13/04/2026 21:32

I was average height throughout my childhood, may be until I was 11. I had my period at 14 and I don’t think I’ve grown since tbh - I’m 5’ tall. But that’s my genes. The shortest girl in my class grew up to be taller than average when in secondary.
I think it’s fine to be short (having lived it for forty plus years) although I’d worry a bit if dc was a son.

Blueeberry · 14/04/2026 12:58

She absolutely will grow more - give it time! DD was one of the smallest girls in her year group until she was about 14 and a half. As well as this she was very skinny, no boobs/curves etc so she really did look young in comparison to most of her peers.

Once she started her periods she very quickly had a massive growth spurt and within ~6 months she looked much more like a young woman than a little girl - the difference in her at 14 compared to 15 was honestly huge. She continued to have smaller growth spurts up until she was 18 and has now ended up at a very average 5’6’’.

VikingLady · 14/04/2026 15:01

DD is still growing like a weed three years after starting her periods (11, now 14). I started at 14 and key growing until 18 or so, albeit increasingly slowly.

toomanysausages · 14/04/2026 15:29

I stopped growing at about 14, which I when I started my period. 5’1 isn’t abnormally short. There are plenty of people about who are much shorter.

This is very unusual. Typically the two years following the start of periods equate to significant growth in height. DD needed scoliosis surgery - they were hesitant to operate until she reached this mark as didn’t want her to miss out on any final growth spurts.

cheesepasties · 14/04/2026 15:50

I was always told you carried on growing til roughly 18 months after your periods start. Certainly true in my case and also both my DDs.

HortiGal · 14/04/2026 15:54

Another way of estimating height; Mid-Parental Method: Add the mother's height and father's height (in inches or cm). Divide by 2. Add 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) for boys, or subtract 2.5 inches (6.5 cm) for girls.
Not always accurate 🙂

You can't say she absolutely will grow more. She might not. Why would it be an issue if she didn't?

You can't say she absolutely will grow more. She might not. Why would it be an issue if she didn't?

Speaking as a mum of a late bloomer DD and a HCP, it would be incredibly unusual for her not to grow more - all of the evidence (girls don’t finish growth until 2 years post menarche!) points to the fact that she very likely will. I didn’t say that it would be an issue, however I don’t think that it’s controversial to say that most women/girls don’t want to end up at 5’1’’ when fully grown. Some strange virtue signalling going on.

CombatBarbie · 14/04/2026 16:43

Girls typically stop growing at 14 but don't think it's period related although my youngest did have a spurt around time she started at 13.

It’s directly linked to periods. Growth plates close ~2 years after they start, hence this is typically a period of rapid growth.

Virtue signalling? Explain how I'm virtue signalling when I'm 5ft myself. Why is it that most women don't want to be this height? I'd love for you to explain that to me.

Fifthtimelucky · 14/04/2026 17:59

At 13, my daughter was taken for an 8 year old as she was very short and her figure was completely undeveloped.

She started growing at 14 and her periods started at 15. She is now 5’8”. She obviously takes after her father who was also a late developer (so short at 16 that his mother took him to the doctor, but 6’3” by the time he was 18).

I was the other way round. Periods started early and I am 5’2.

Tillow4ever · 14/04/2026 18:16

I’m sure it’s been said by now, but I read somewhere that girls reach their adult height approx 2 years after their periods start.

I’m not sure though if you definitely grow taller throughout, just that you won’t grow much re after that.

Whatisbest26 · 14/04/2026 18:23

My DD13 had her first period at 12 and is still growing. She is 5ft 8 now with size 8 feet. Always been the tallest in her class. I’m interested to see how much more she will grow as I’m only 5ft 7 but my sister is 6ft!

Deadringer · 14/04/2026 18:29

My eldest dd was the shortest in her class at 12, by the time she left school she was average in the class, she is 5' 5". By youngest dd was the tallest in her class at 12, and was one of the taller ones by the end of school, she is 5' 8". They both started their period at 14. They are all different. I have 4 dds and none of them stopped growing until they were 16/17.

Chickadee001 · 15/04/2026 06:35

She's definitely going to grow more in every way - I was about 4'10'' when I started my periods aged 9 and my adult height is 5'5''!

Interesting, did your dd have a growth spurt after her first period? Do you remember how long that intense growth spurt went on for?

Same questions as above, did you have you fast growth spurt after you had your period or before?

It does seem all very individual, which makes sense.

I tell ours that they are going to end up the height they end up there isn’t much anyone can do about it bar not being malnourished/eating a balanced diet.

Lampzade · 15/04/2026 07:57

I was 5ft 6 when I was 10 . I started my period at 12 and only grew one more inch
I always though that once you started your period the rate of growth slowed down

tablestoolchairfork · 13/04/2026 11:00

She is sensitive she is the shortest in her group of friends at school and at hobbies outside of school.

I am 5ft and have always been the shortest - except for my sister who is 4ft11ins. It has made no difference to my life whatsoever. No boy ever said I was too short for them to go out with and I was never turned down for a job because I was too short. It didn’t affect my achievement academically. The only issue arises when I go to the theatre and a 6ft giant sits in front of me. There are more important things to worry about.
