AIBU to tell MIL to stop criticising DS’s fake tan?

DS had a fake tan today, MIL expressed in an indirect way non stop about how it doesn’t look good. Should we have told her to stop after 3 times of telling her to

Well I’d tell her to pack it in. Who wants to sit and listen to someone being mean to someone else about how they look?

As an adult I couldnt think of anything or embarrassing than my gran criticising my tan...apart from my mum defending me....

As an adult I can’t think of anything more tedious than listening to someone making snide comments about another adult. I’m perfect happy voicing that.

Fairly sure that anyone in my family having a fake tan in 2026 would provoke a smirk from…well, literally everyone in the extended family.

However, it’s rude of the grandparent to make unsolicited personal remarks, yes.

Does a 25yo want to argue with his gp because they think his fake tan looks silly? If so, he can absolutely tell them ‘Grandma, you’re being rude, I like the way it looks, & I think it’s inappropriate to make personal remarks’.

The one thing that definitely doesn’t need to happen is you wading in. 25yo ds is a competent adult who can decide for himself if he gives a scooby that his grandmother has an opinion on his beauty regime.

KellsBells7 · 13/04/2026 01:36

My Nan had no filter. I don’t think there was a hairstyle or outfit that escaped comment! If my hair was curly she liked it straight, if it was straight she liked it curly! I just used to roll my eyes, I certainly didn’t want or need my mum to speak for me - and I was younger than your son.

There was no malice in her, it was just generational differences and an absence of being able to keep her mouth shut! She did the same with my cousins. She’s been dead many years now and we still laugh about it, and still have a lot of “can you imagine what Nan would say about this” moments!

I think any man who has a fake tan deserves to be ridiculed. Surely his friends are going to take the piss anyway. If his grandma's comments annoy him he can tell her himself, doesn't need mummy to do it for him.

Do women who have fake tan also deserve to be ridiculed?

THIS! Why on earth would a man wear fake tan?!

Could say the same about women. It can look daft on women too

PollyBell · 13/04/2026 02:03

People are still wearing fake tan in 2026? 🫤

Fake is still in it seems tan, nails, hair, lips, eyelashes any anything else a person can fake and we are still told it is meant to look good, if people don't all look the same how they can manage to go on reality tv?

SaltyandSweet · 13/04/2026 03:07

I voted YABU only because he is an adult and should be able to say knock it off for himself. You doing it for him would be a bit weird

IberianLynx · 13/04/2026 03:33

Strange behaviour all round, where was this? In Essex?

Ferrissia · 13/04/2026 03:55

My grandmother behaved similarly when I got a new haircut (early 20s). My mum was there and she said nothing. I would have loved it if she had stuck up for me.

What a load of sexist shite.

WTF! Surely we don’t encourage bullying anymore? Just because he’s male he can’t get a fake tan. You need to take a long look in the mirror and reflect on your values.

Tourmalines · 13/04/2026 05:08

Where has everyone’s minds gone that they can’t think for themselves. Why even ask the question weather you should tell her to stop . Are people so unsure of how to react to situations that they need validation on the most simple things .

QuirkyHorse · 13/04/2026 05:55

My dm is a nasty bitch, my kids know to take her criticism with a pinch of salt.
Tell your ds to let it wash over him.

Zanatdy · 13/04/2026 05:59

I’d have said ok enough, we heard you the first, second and third time.

Just men?

Hohumitsreallyallthereis · 13/04/2026 06:39

Stop babying your 25 year old!

Dollymylove · 13/04/2026 07:00

Sorry but if any of my sons in their 20s walked in sporting a fake tan I would be bent double with laughter 😃 😀

And were you gagged, so that you couldn’t just say ‘Give it a rest, Gran’ yourself?

TwilightSkies · 12/04/2026 18:43

I’m surprised posters think that granny’s rudeness is ok.
When is it ever ok to be nasty about someone’s appearance?
Im sure if he critiqued her appearance in retaliation , posters would call him rude.

This. I thought giving unasked for opinions on someone's appearance was always wrong.

Firesidechatter · 13/04/2026 07:11

Well obvs she shouldn’t tell him but I’m guessing he’s quite fake tanned looking and she’s not wrong.😂
