Couples who live separately so they get additional financial support

A couple I know got married over a year ago, yet they still live separately. She has two children from a previous relationship and lives in a 3 bed house. He lives in a 2 bed house and has no children. I mention the size of their homes because it’s clear that there is ample space for the entire family to live under one roof. I can’t think of any other reason for their separate living arrangements (considering they have made a commitment to each other through marriage) aside from financial security, as her eldest child has SEN and she doesn’t work. He is working, which I assume could complicate things if he were to move in. Yes, I understand it’s legal, but I can’t help but think they’re taking advantage of the system in some way. This isn't the first time I've heard of couples or families living apart in order to increase their income. I’m ready to be accused of benefit bashing or called all the names under the sun. Don’t care sorry!

The child in question is in full time education. Both kids are. Picked up and dropped off in a taxi every day. She could work if she wanted to.

Possibly not if she is required to be available to pick up her child at any point.

Nope. I’ve witnessed it first hand. Stop being a sheep.

Witnessed what, exactly? Someone’s bank statements? Multiple people’s bank statements?

I agree that she’s vindictive and I definitely don’t think she’s jealous of her lifestyle either.

But she’s definitely jealous too for some reason, to spend so much energy thinking about this woman.

I’m wondering if her DH turned OP down or she’s a friend or sibling who happens to be very pretty and OP is bitter.

Are you still on that theory 🤣

Im not the one following and believing everything I read in the daily mail. Its fine to have these discussions but only when talking facts not spreading misinformation.

Oh, they heard them talking about it. Because people on benefits talk about nothing else. 🙄

Most people on benefits get the equivalent (if not more) to a full time salary. I should know, I’ve seen it. I can assure you working people struggle more

That’s BS.

I lost my job and UC barely covered my essential bills.

Me getting a job even on NMW meant I was way better off.

You do realise that many working people claim UC as well because their income is not high enough?

You obviously earn very high to not need UC top ups but that is a choice.

You could easily choose to get a lower paid job, pay less tax and receive UC tops ups.
You could even choose to live separately from your partner too.

But you wouldn’t do any of these as you know you’d be worse off.

I’m surprised you haven’t started calling people sheep yet!

Isn’t that what the naive start spouting when asked for facts to back up their ridiculous claims.

Nothing to do with you.

Yeah because people always give random neighbours, relatives and friends full access to their bank accounts and medical records

The median full time salary in the UK is £39k.

The idea that the majority of people on benefits receive that (or indeed more) is risible.

I know someone who receives almost 27k a year in benefits. That’s equivalent to what someone earns working 40 hours a week on minimum wage. So some poor fucker has to work all week for the same amount of money, while the other doesn’t even lift a finger.

It has nothing to do with you op what other people do with their lifes.

Okay, can I stop paying tax then since it’s nothing to do with me? Let me know.

OP, could you engage with the point sone have made that there can very well be NON FINANCIAL reasons why they choose to live separately...as many of us choose to do with new partners after divorce. We dont wish to blend, our kids don't want or need step parents but we have a romantic attachment that will, in time, be able to develop further but not with the kids at home. Could you please respond to that?

Well it’s a lot more, more like the equivalent of a 40k wage if the 27k is net. But if it’s so good and so easy, why isn’t everyone on benefits?

youalright · 11/04/2026 13:14

slimline · 11/04/2026 13:12

Only 6% of a person's tax goes on the benefit bill which you could quite possibly need yourself one day

You do what you want op, dont need to ask stranger's for permission to do what you feel you need to do.

Vaxtable · 11/04/2026 13:16

This happens more than people think and should be stopped. A acquaintances daughter has 5 children all SEN. Same father, both live separately and both on benefits. They freely admit this is done so they can claim more benefits that if they lived together

Its wrong and one reason the benefits bill is so high

Allrightonthenight1 · 11/04/2026 13:16

It's quite common. I know several families who do this.
