Another poor child is killed by a dog.... We already know this is an XL Bully, don't even have to wait for confirmation.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce35zkl9dg3o

A Google street view of Hardale Grove. It is a residential cul-de-sac with cars parked on the pavement.

Child dies in Redcar dog attack, police say

Police remain at the scene in Dormanstown, where one dog was destroyed earlier.

We absolutely can do away with dogs. I am not willing to accept people being killed by dogs. Why are you?

Well why stop at dogs, in that case? Let's ban cars, trains and train tracks, rugby, boxing and horse riding, parachuting, skiing, I mean definitely skiing, it's just death or brain injury waiting to happen. And certainly all bicycles and motorbikes.

Fill in lakes and reservoirs, make it illegal to have a domestic swimming pool or paddling pool due to lack of life guard. Ban all knives and pass a law that says only licenced people like butchers and food production factories can have knives, and all food needs to be sold cut into bite sized chunks to negate the need for knives in households.

Ban grapes (choking hazard and not everyone can be trusted to cut them in half.) Ban stairs. Only bungalows from now on. Ladders. Ladders should definitely be banned. Cigarettes. Alcohol. Obviously all illegal recreational drugs. Also bees and wasps. Up to 10 people per year die of bee stings in the UK alone, which is marginally more than die from death by dog.

Edited

You know why.

We need cars and trains. We need knives. We need bees.

Someone choosing to be a boxer, a horse rider or a skier is not going to cause me any harm. Your dog may.

I'd happily ban cigarettes and alcohol.

There’s always one ☝️

There is no more logical reason to ban all dogs based on the number of deaths and serious injuries per year than there is to ban any of the things I've suggested.

A skier can't kill me. If I ever choose to ski, I have chosen that risk.
And if they do ski into me and kill me, it's still a better death than being mauled by a dog.

Apart from anything else people are spending far too much time money and energy on bloody dogs that will never become taxpayers.
Less of them had a sausage dog they might get down to the business of having a baby

I don't want to sound too harsh as they are sort of a substitute baby for some people who can't have children, however, they are sometimes a sort of baby replacement for those who can and are not trained at all.

A friend has a miniature Yorkshire terrier who growls at me and barks at me sometimes when I'm there, now don't get me wrong, the doggie is tiny so I'm not scared of it it's annoying though.

She doesn't walk it everyday, either.
This has put me off her as the dog has so much pent up energy.
She's a largish garden so it goes out there but only if it's dry 'cause it may get wet. Ffs. It's a f-ing dog.

There's a cohort of people who treat dogs as either babies or weapons.
They shouldn't be allowed them.

They're animals and need training!!
Just because it's cute doesn't mean to say it's human.

I've actually volunteered to take 'Susie' for walks and she's so happy sniffing about like the little doggie she is.
In fact, I feel sorry for Susie so much that taking her for the odd walk is about the only reason I'm continuing the friendship.

I wouldn't even describe myself as being a dog lover. I prefer cats.

Apparently, a lurcher type of dog was responsible for this attack.
I have never thought of lurchers as aggressive. 😲

You have the ability to stay away from dogs by choosing not to hang around in places where they are likely to be off lead, or going into houses where they are present, so it's the same choice as choosing to be around skiers or not. The chances of a dog committing a serious attack on you at random in a public place is extremely low in general, if you are not in any of those places, and even if you are it's still pretty low. Probably lower than the chances of you getting hit by a bus or an e-bike rider while crossing the road in a busy town or city.

They are unavoidable unless I stay home. They are in shops and cafes and even churches now. I do avoid homes with dogs, but it is a chore and people try to wear me down about my choice not to go to their home.

Either way, I'd STILL rather get knocked over by a bus and be done with it, than viciously mauled by a dog. Wouldn't you?

A lurcher is simply any breed crossed with any sighthound. But most commonly, to get the traits desired in a lurcher (usually bred by poachers before they became fashionable for their looks) they will use a sighthound for high prey drive and speed, then either a collie or terrier, or a collie crossed with some sort of terrier. The collie is presumably for intelligence and obedience I am guessing, as those are not things sighthounds are generally known for, to put it mildly. Not sure what the terrier is for specifically.

However, I remember reading an article a few years ago about the recent habit of using bull breeds as the terrier element of a lurcher, and how it was irresponsible and dangerous. The person writing the article made the point that a sighthound's speed and high prey drive, plus its tendency to 'go deaf' and ignore any attempts at recall when it spotted prey, coupled with the strength and the aggressive nature bred into bull terriers was a potentially huge problem waiting to happen.

Is that a subtle victim blaming ?

igelkott2026 · 11/04/2026 15:08

I see a 19 year old girl/young woman has now been killed by a dog too.

FGS. If it were anything else we'd have stronger regulation.

You can't even have dogs on leads because the owners whine - see https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2d8rlnk458o- I fully expect this decision will be rescinded in time. People always capitulate to the dog owner lobby.

Dogs should be licensed and always on short leads in shared use areas. It wouldn't be that hard to fence off areas in parks for them to exercise off-lead. It was noticeable in Berlin how many dog training areas there were. Although that doesn't stop people being mauled by their own pets but it saves the rest of us

Not very subtle and anyway you can't stay away from dogs because their owners take them everywhere!

I'd much rather take my chance with a bike on the pavement than an out of control dog.

Like a pp have said, lurchers are simply crosses of any breed with a sighthound. They can be 3/4 bull 1/4 greyhound - these were predominantly used for foxes (and on animals that are illegal to kill).

Lurchers can range in size from small whippet to huge, strong deerhound or greyhound bull crosses. Easily capable in temperament and strength of killing a person and certainly capable of killing quite large animals.

There are definitely XL bully/pit bulls crossed with greyhounds around.

Not everyone needs a car. Few people need more than one. I suspect things that you think should be banned and things that you don't will fall roughly into the groups 'things you don't like' and 'things you think you're entitled to have'

Dogs should be licensed

Alternatively, people should be licensed to be in charge of a dog. Much easier to police. If it really mattered. Which it doesn't.

bagpuss90 · 11/04/2026 15:18

You cannot compare most dogs to an xl bully. A lot of dogs do a lot of good- they’re therapeutic, great companions. We have therapy dogs, assistance dogs , guide dogs - they’re great. Only an utter clueless moron would own an xl bully and it’s a lethal combination. I agree they should be culled but no way can we tar all dogs with the same brush. It’s like saying everyone who attends a football match is a hooligan

Littlewrenn · 11/04/2026 15:24

I'm so pissed off that the powers that be allowed a population explosion of XL bullies.

All of these attacks and deaths could have been prevented if the authorities had nailed them when they started appearing under the original Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

Common sense would dictate they are of Pitbull type - they have as much place in society as Pitbulls do. This could all have been avoided with common sense and swift action.

SerendipityJane · 11/04/2026 15:28

But the irresponsible owners would not get a licence, and no one would check up on them. How many more must be injured or killed by these monsters before something is done?

I’ve seen one of those behemoths in the flesh recently, and man alive, it was intimidating just to look at.
I was genuinely frightened.

People’s fear is the reason that Neanderthals acquire these monsters.

Ultimately, I feel that legislation is futile. The kind of people that choose to get XL bullies, Staffies, cane corsos etc are scummy people who want to look hard and take joy in parading their creatures out and about and causing fear.

Yes and they like that people are frightened. We could almost separate humans into 2 kinds - the type that enjoy scaring and intimidating people and the type they would hate people feeling intimidated or scaredm XL bully owners are the former and they are not nice people not do they have any intellectual capacity.
