to think that a grown woman would know that America only has TWO coastlines?

from this interview in The Times with the singer Duffy

She says:

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't exhausting sometimes. But I don't mind a bit of graft.? She recounts a conversation that she had on a plane with someone from the record company. ?We went on the plane in the middle of a promo trip and they said, ?That's the West Coast done'. I said, ?Just another three to go now'.?

It was left to her fellow travellers to gently tell her about Canada and Mexico - the two pieces of land topping and tailing America. ?And I was like, ?What? There's only two coasts in America'? That's embarrassing for me.

?At the same time, I was delighted. Less work, you see.?

I think she is about 22 or so. Surely she taketh the piss?

omg.
America only has 2 coastlines?

notnowbernard · 19/06/2008 10:33

I think what is particularly sad about this is her willingness to disclose her ignorance to a wider audience

I would have kept my trap shut

Romy7 · 19/06/2008 10:33

she sounds hilarious - i like her already

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 19/06/2008 10:34

idiot.
did she just not realize that canada existed? or maybe didn't realize that thye touched...

moron.

MrsBadger · 19/06/2008 10:35

there is a substantial stretch of coast that faces south though - Texas, Louisiana etc

Oliveoil · 19/06/2008 10:35

she comes across ok in the article but I thought OMG when I read that

surely it is some mistake

dh told me that he read something in the paper yesterday, some celeb or other, and the interviewer said "Simon Cowell, your Svengali" and the said................."I didn't know he was from Africa!!"

he swears this is true !

strengthinnumbers · 19/06/2008 10:35

I think she is surely joking

NotQuiteCockney · 19/06/2008 10:36

Well, you could count the Gulf of Mexico as a coast?

mears · 19/06/2008 10:37

That was Holly Willoughby, Oliveoil

Oliveoil · 19/06/2008 10:38

Alasken coast

Mercy · 19/06/2008 10:40

strengthinnumbers · 19/06/2008 10:41

notnowbernard · 19/06/2008 10:41

Admits to being "completely ignorant"

Then do something about it then, you daft bint!

FFS!

Oliveoil · 19/06/2008 10:42

would you describe it as a coast though

I say east and west coast, I don't refer to any other coasts

anyhoo, at least she can sing!

lol at svengali, it is hilarious isn't it?

Actually tbh - although I know that Mexico is underneath I couldn't swear that Canada is on top of all of America - though tthere was something at top - antartica , no?

belgo · 19/06/2008 10:43

map of USA

NotQuiteCockney · 19/06/2008 10:44

Sure, you could maybe count the Alaskan coast, the Hawaiian coasts, and the Gulf of Mexico ... only the first two aren't big enough population centres that you'd bother touring them ...

Svengali is lovely.

Reminds me of the time Richard E Grant was on some jokey quiz show, and said he was from Swaziland. Someone (Stephen Fry?) corrected him, saying it was pronounced Switzerland.

That Svengali remark was so funny. Quite amusing that Holly Willoughby thinks she was hired for her talent!! Hmm, can't see her still presenting prime time TV in 20 years time. It will be another pretty 20 something with big norks.

NotQuiteCockney · 19/06/2008 10:45

Canada is on top of America. With Alaska at the very top. The artic is after that, only a) it's not a country at all b) there isn't much land, some islands, mostly Canadian, and a lot of water.

You are kidding, right, lisalisa?

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 19/06/2008 10:47

actually alaska is on the side. heck if you count all the islands and stuff canada's got thousands of coasts.

belgo · 19/06/2008 10:47

Antartica is right at the bottom, at the bottom of South America
