to think that a grown woman would know that America only has TWO coastlines?

from this interview in The Times with the singer Duffy

She says:

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't exhausting sometimes. But I don't mind a bit of graft.? She recounts a conversation that she had on a plane with someone from the record company. ?We went on the plane in the middle of a promo trip and they said, ?That's the West Coast done'. I said, ?Just another three to go now'.?

It was left to her fellow travellers to gently tell her about Canada and Mexico - the two pieces of land topping and tailing America. ?And I was like, ?What? There's only two coasts in America'? That's embarrassing for me.

?At the same time, I was delighted. Less work, you see.?

I think she is about 22 or so. Surely she taketh the piss?

Well much as they may think otherwise the world does not revolve around America...from the world map I can see in my head I can "see" its coastline but its not something I have particularly given any thought to or even care about...perhaps Duffy has more important things on her mind.

Oh and im not an irate fan...I barely even know who she is.

LOL at svengali though...now that gaffe would be embarrassing.

I met an American blues singer on a Jumbo from LA to London once. She was on her way to Amsterdam to sing in a festival and had to switch flights at Heathrow.

"So where exactly in England is Amsterdam?", she asked me.

The US is a pretty big country and the stats for passport ownership, travel abroad etc are staggering in their small stature. Many people in the central states have never crossed state lines, let alone seen the "ocean".

Oliveoil · 19/06/2008 10:51

would you class the gulf as the south coast though OR is it a continutation of the west?

Also, "America" has many countries and many coastlines- was she "doing" South and Central America as well? (I guess not...)

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 19/06/2008 10:52

i remember when i was a kid all the maps i saw had america as this huge country and canada was just tucked up top, looking raher small.

MrsBadger · 19/06/2008 10:58

but culturally no=one would ever call (eg) New Orleans the East Coast

NotQuiteCockney · 19/06/2008 11:05

No, I think New Orleans is the South.

Or Flyover Country.

One of those ...

She knws more about US geography than most American's know about UK geography. When I moved to California aged 15 the other teenagers in my (very good) school asked the following:
Is England the country shaped like a foot?
Where in Canada is London?
Had you ever seen the sea before you came to California?
You speak great English for a European!

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 19/06/2008 11:11

actually London is a couple hours away from Toronto. my aunt lives there.

HermanMunster · 19/06/2008 12:40

yes for a thread giving out about someone elses geographical ignorance surely it should read "the united states"
