Sparkles all over vision both eyes for a few seconds

Hello, shamelessly posting here for traffic. I’m aware that of course no one here can give actual medial advice. I’ve run this through Claude/ ChatGPT etc.

but was wondering if anyone experienced this before. Today I was just walking around and suddenly I saw sparkles in my entire field of vision- both eyes, top/ bottom / sides and in front of me.

it was as if I had walked into a swarm of tiny sparkly flies / dust. It lasted 20-30 seconds and then went away.

I had the same thing once before, 6 months ago.

both times, I did not feel unwell / dizzy or like I was about to pass out or anything like that.

I suffer from MS, which is well controlled and very quiet the last few years. I also suffer from migraines but never with aura.

could this just be a migraine with aura or ocular migraine or something ? Last time I didn’t go to the doctor but mentioned it when I was discussing my migraine management in general and the doctor did say I should go to the eye clinic. I didn’t go. I did have a recent eye exam at the optician and all was fine. I do need glasses etc but eyes healthy.

it sounds self limiting to me and not something I am overly stressed about. It doesn’t sound like an MS eye symptom either. I’ve had optic neuritis and that’s completely different. Am I being too chill or is it just one of those things ? Thank you !

Definitely worth getting looked at. If you call 111 they can advise.

pambeesleyhalpert · 08/04/2026 18:42

Please go and get checked it out I’d go to an optician

SophieJo · 08/04/2026 18:49

I get what looks like flickering kaleidoscope sparlkies every so often. They don’t last long and my optician said it’s an ocular migraine.

It does sound like a form of migraine. I get visual disturbance, without pain or pain without visual disturbance. Otc painkillers usually sort out either form.

Ramblingaway · 08/04/2026 18:56

Ocular migraine usually lasts 15-25 minutes, what you're describing doesn't sound like that.

LappingLouisa · 08/04/2026 18:58

I often get visual disturbances that sound similar, that I presume are migraine related, although never get a headache and they don’t always last 20 mins. I often find bright sunlight can set them off. I don’t have MS but I do have an autoimmune disease and they started at the same time as diagnosis.

FastFood · 08/04/2026 18:58

I have ocular migraines sometimes, no pain, just a weird moving star-shape halo. Sometimes it lasts, sometimes it passes without really starting.

Jc2001 · 08/04/2026 19:00

Could be a visual migraine. Sounds similar to something I get every now and then although mine last for about 20mins.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 08/04/2026 19:04

It only lasted seconds, and was like 'seeing stars'? I get this all the time, like if I cough hard or bend down for ages or get up quickly.

Its just an eye pressure thing I think.

I also get migraine aura which lasts for 40 mins or so, not seconds.

PissedOffAndStuck · 08/04/2026 19:07

I sometimes get this if I 'overstretch my eyes' eg turning round a bit too far to check out a spot on my shoulder 😂.

Have also had ocular migraines but symptoms were more severe and went on for longer.

It's not something I'd personally get checked out urgently, but given your medical history I think a more cautious approach might be called for.

Yeah it’s not quite the same as the usual when I get up too quickly or cough. It was really different.

I get those too. My optician said the same thing and told me not to worry if they were infrequent.

Funnywonder · 08/04/2026 19:15

I get the ‘seeing stars’ thing briefly now and then. Usually if I stand up or turn my head too fast or even if I’ve been staring into space (not literally!) for a while, then shift focus. I think it might be a sudden drop in blood pressure.

I get similar sometimes, but for like 20 mins at a time. I spoke to my optician about it and they said nothing wrong with my eyes and that it's visual migraines, although they cause no pain.

EBearhug · 08/04/2026 19:24

I've had number 3, but in Mondrian colours - black and white with yellow, blue and red. I have also had 6, in silver, and I thought it made everything rather beautiful. Can't remember how long it lasts, as I'm not sure I always notice it as it starts.

TheWickerWoman · 08/04/2026 19:33

I went through a phase of these a couple of years ago. No pain or headache.

funnily enough I had optic neuritis in 2014 and have been investigated for MS a couple of times since then but my brain/spinal scans were clear.

I was told it could be an ocular or aura migraine despite never getting any pain with it. It can last a good half hour then goes. It always feels like it’s concentrated on the left side but it’s there when I close each on its own to test where it is.

Sorry yes 25! I edited my post sorry so now your comment doesn't make sense.
I would love see random cats in my vision now and then!

Thebibleofdave · 08/04/2026 19:59

I had the exact same thing. Asked the optician last week and they said low blood pressure

ForestHare · 08/04/2026 20:18

EBearhug · 08/04/2026 18:59

I get 3, and sometimes 13 and it lasts a good while, normally without pain but not always.

I also sometimes see stars but it lasts seconds so I assumed it was eye pressure as well
