AIBU to think shorts are not wedding guest attire abroad?

We are attending an abroad wedding in the summer (Greek island - at a resort rather than on a beach).

DH intends to where chino style shorts and a short sleeve shirt!

I have told him that whenever I’ve seen photos of men attending abroad weddings, they are still wearing a suit/trousers.

I am worried he will look ridiculous! He insists this is appropriate attire…AIBU to disagree?

You are projecting your own very narrow definition of appropriate onto other people and pretending it's some universal law.

Possibly, but I’d rather not see mens legs in my wedding photos, or bare arms with tattoos either. Putting a pair of trousers and proper shirt on for a wedding isn’t too much to ask of male guests.

😂

Fair enough! I’ve always just dressed appropriately for each occasion, so my bar is set for everyone else to manage to do the same, or just don’t attend if they can’t be bothered to.

But you dont get to decide what others wear or wear is acceptable or not

Pwoplw who don't want to wear shorts dont have too, I personally wouldn't but I dont who else does

As long as you aren't a Greek native (my family are) as they would be horrified 😬
As a tourist, it's individual choice.
Not for me though.

Yes I was about to post the same. Usually linen suits for men. Never ever shorts. Rolled up sleeves, at the end of an evening. I’ve got a wedding in July in Cyprus. Close cousin. I’ll be in a long dress. Dh in linen suit.

@TwoBagsOfCompost can I be your sisters relative? I’m dreading having to wear long. But the family will be horrified if I don’t, as will be seen as disrespectful.

I went to one recently and the dress-code was black-tie. I didn’t think it was rude. Their photos looked amazing. Their wedding, their choice!

Don’t like it, don’t come.

I might not. If anyone cares more about the image of the event rather than the actual people and purpose of it they probably aren't people I'm friends with anyway.

@Weryj I’d be disappointed if anyone wore shorts to my wedding. My nephew wore a short sleeve white shirt with trousers and tie and I hate seeing the short sleeved shirt in the photos. It just seemed too casual for my wedding and as if no effort, to dress-up, was made. I wish I had stipulated a dress code.

You should definitely ask the bride if you’re not sure. The groom won’t probably care.

I saw a photo on FB of a friend’s husband in shorts (and trainers) at a UK summer wedding, think it was on a farm of some sorts, and he looked completely ridiculous standing next to his well-dressed wife and suited teenage sons.

If the sight of skin is that offensive, why would gou get married in a hot country?

I lived in Cyprus for a few years, saw many weddings, and many of them had guests in shorts. Especially at the reception.

LoveOwnCompany · 08/04/2026 08:54

The happy memories are there too.

It really isn’t fascinating!

I’ve been to a few weddings in hot countries and no one wore shorts. People dressed for a wedding not for a night-out.

I see it as the other way round. If you care for the couple getting married, you’ll dress respectfully for their big day.

OneTimeThingToday · 08/04/2026 09:00

Fainting and drenched in sweat are hardly respectful looks.

Cyprus can be 45º in summer.

Do people wear shorts for nights out? I’d say it’s more about the temperature. It can hit 40 degrees in Greece in the summer. British people are generally not acclimatised to wearing trousers in that heat. Surely they don’t want guests to be that uncomfortable all day. It’s enough to expect people to travel that far, without dictating that they sweat all day too.

A linen suit. Problem solved.

Men wear smart shorts on nights out when abroad. Some females too.

A linen suit for men attending a wedding abroad is suitable but not shorts.

Absolutely this. Id rather people were nicely dressed and comfortable than get my knickers in a twist about shorts. I also assume these same people took annual leave and paid for flights and accommodation to attend the wedding. Id just be very grateful they came that distance

Would you expect women with tattoos on their arms to wear long sleeves? What about tattoos on hands or necks? Would you expect gloves and scarves to be worn?

KittyHigham · 08/04/2026 09:13

Surely you just message and ask?
"Hi X and Y
Really looking forward to your wedding. Just wanted to check the dress code for the event. Are smart shorts acceptable or would you prefer long trousers?

So sorry the length of a child's sleeves spoilt your day 💐

I only know men with large tattoos and females with very discreet tattoos , usually in places covered, so haven’t really put any thought into it to be able to answer your questions.

What an attitude! Caring more about what people wear than the fact that they attend says a lot about you.

Linen trousers would actually be cooler and more comfortable than shorts I would have thought.

And yet here I have a photo in front of me of an island wedding, and the groom is wearing shorts.

How I would hate to have such a limited imagination.

YourSassyPanda · 08/04/2026 09:21

I went to “destination” weddings in Spain and Italy last year and the men were dressed in chino style shorts and short sleeved shirts. Both second weddings though so possibly less formal.

Ah, you and I are not going to be seeing eye-to-eye on this due to a fundamental difference in values.

That's OK though.

SALaw · 08/04/2026 09:29

If the bride and groom are asking their guests to fork out ££££ to travel to their wedding and that wedding is in a hot climate, I don’t think they can then stipulate that long trousers are mandatory.

Really?

Did all the women have their arms and legs covered as well? and did they all wear hats?

Recklessismymiddlename · 08/04/2026 09:31

Could also be cultural differences.

No Greek or Cypriot (the ones I know anyway) would dream of wearing shorts or short sleeves to a wedding.

But if I was going to a British friend’s wedding to Cyprus (& none of my family were going 😉) I’d not be wearing long that’s for sure!
