AIBU to expect a cleaner to clear hair from plug holes without being asked?

AIBU to expect a cleaner to empty the plug hole of hair etc as a standard part of a clean?

I thought I’d treat ourselves to a cleaner and they came for the first time yesterday to do a 6 hour clean on a 4 bed house. This initial clean was meant to be for longer than what they will do going forward. 6 hours vs the 4 hours they said they’d need ongoing every fortnight.
I had expected them to clean the oven on this first clean but they didn’t (however although I asked if they cleaned ovens, we hadn’t agreed they would specifically do this on the first clean). - so that’s my fault for not specifying.

I also found that not all the skirtings were dusted and even though they specifically cleaned the blinds, there was still dust on them in places..

YABU - you’re expecting too much
YANBU - a cleaner should do all the dusting and empty the plugs as standard

Try a different cleaner. I went through about 4 to find a good one. Lots were good on first visit and then increasingly bad from visit 3 onwards

To address your specific question, yes if taking the hair out of plugholes is top of your priorities you need to say so.

TheChosenTwo · 07/04/2026 21:48

I think a list might be helpful at the beginning outlining your expectations - to answer your question, yes I would expect plug holes to be clean.
We have a separate oven cleaner who comes twice a year, it takes him 3 hours a time and does a very thorough job - were you just expecting a cursory wipe over to be done in that time?

Nickyknackered · 07/04/2026 21:50

I think that's one if those things, along with stripping beds and cleaning the skid marks in your loo, that you should do yourself.

CallingOnTheMegaphone · 07/04/2026 21:51

I would never expect anyone else to clean my hair out of a plughole, that's grim. Do it yourself!

Nervousmummy2 · 07/04/2026 21:52

I don’t think I’d expect her to clean that an I don’t understand why you can’t remove your own hair from your own plug… I’m sure you don’t just leave everything in between her visits to build up… like do you leave your poo stains on the toilet for her also? If she’s good enough at everything else I absolutely wouldn’t be crying about her not cleaning a plug hole

Chatsbots · 07/04/2026 21:53

I was a cleaner for a while and you clean everything you see but there's always more...if it's a priority for you, tell her, she's not a mindreader.

You always have to make decisions because if you totally deep clean one area, then others aren't done at all and usually there's a time limit.

Oven cleaning (especially if it's totally minging) is a specialist job.

PottingBench · 07/04/2026 21:55

Christ. That's a bad enough job if it's your own hair, soap scum, snot and pubes. Fancy expecting some poor sod to do it for minimum wage.

pavillion1 · 07/04/2026 21:58

Plug hole yes Oven Absolutely not

Createausername1970 · 07/04/2026 21:59

No! That is not something I would expect a cleaner to do.

olympicsrock · 07/04/2026 22:02

No - I would not expect the cleaner to do plug holes or ovens

charlieandjenna · 07/04/2026 22:02

I am a cleaner and yes I do clean hair out of the plug but at the same time I find it a bit grim that it’s been left for me to do.
on a first clean they are finding their feet around your home and you will notice what areas need cleaning the most, more so than someone who has only spent a few hours in your home. Just mention anything that you think would be helpful for them to do a job that you will be happy with and see how they get on after two or three cleans.

MandemChickenShop · 07/04/2026 22:03

That's gross. You have to do a minimum clean and tidy first before the cleaner turns up.

You wouldn't leave a massive jobbie floating about would you? Or would you?

Cricketashes · 07/04/2026 22:07

Why would you leave this for the cleaner? That's disgusting.

Kaltenzahn · 07/04/2026 22:07

I wouldn't expect a cleaner to scoop my hair out of the plughole anymore than I'd expect them to flush the toilet for me. It's just an extra level of gross and something you should really do yourself. Would you want to scoop a strangers wet hair/pubes out of a shower plug?

Oven cleaning I would expect this to be something you requested specifically. Takes ages, needs different cleaning products and doesn't need to be done every week.

hazelberry · 07/04/2026 22:08

No. Clean your own hair out of the plughole. It's disgusting to think your cleaner will do it.

Screamingabdabz · 07/04/2026 22:08

I really didn’t know that people existed who would pay some poor person (usually a woman of course) minimum wage with an expectation that they would automatically clear their gross shit out of their plug holes and then casually moan that the slave didn’t do it. How do you live with yourselves? I’m genuinely shocked.

PinkNailPolish2026 · 07/04/2026 22:08

I don’t expect our cleaner to clean hair from plugholes or do the oven. We pay for someone to do the oven separately. We have plugs that catch the hair, it takes 2 seconds to remove the disk on top of the plug and remove the hair. Some things you don’t expect people to do for you…

Thechaseison71 · 07/04/2026 22:11

Why does everyone assume the cleaner is on minimum wage. Often they can be earning £20 an hour and the person employing them earns less or is even on benefits.

I wouldn't leave hairs in the plughole though as it's one of my big ears and I couldn't leave it but it's possible someone can't do that themselves. What if you are blind?

What if they had no arms?

What if they had no arms?

Well physical disabilities can restrict what people can do housework wise obviously

This is so grim surely you would clean away your own hair I couldn’t leave this for someone else to do, it’s something you clean as you go, you remove it regularly keep on top of it

mondaytosunday · 07/04/2026 22:17

You have to be very specific. Ovens are definitely an extra job, as is cleaning out the fridge or changing the bed linen and cleaning windows. You need to have a list of what you expect her to do every week and what’s included in a longer clean.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 07/04/2026 22:18

You could have done it yourself in the time it took you to write this post.

Lurkingandlearning · 07/04/2026 22:20

No. That is a disgusting job. Why would you ask someone to clean up anything that’s come out of you or off of you. That is part of personal hygiene. Have a better t of self respect.
