AIBU to expect a cleaner to clear hair from plug holes without being asked?

AIBU to expect a cleaner to empty the plug hole of hair etc as a standard part of a clean?

I thought I’d treat ourselves to a cleaner and they came for the first time yesterday to do a 6 hour clean on a 4 bed house. This initial clean was meant to be for longer than what they will do going forward. 6 hours vs the 4 hours they said they’d need ongoing every fortnight.
I had expected them to clean the oven on this first clean but they didn’t (however although I asked if they cleaned ovens, we hadn’t agreed they would specifically do this on the first clean). - so that’s my fault for not specifying.

I also found that not all the skirtings were dusted and even though they specifically cleaned the blinds, there was still dust on them in places..

YABU - you’re expecting too much
YANBU - a cleaner should do all the dusting and empty the plugs as standard

If they cleaned for 6hrs then you got what you paid for.
If after 6hrs some things are not clean, then your house was too dirty to be completely cleaned in 6hrs.

I don't think it's part of her job to clean up your body mess, so no poo, drain hair, soiled sanitary pads etc. I have a cleaner and I do a quick whizz round before she comes. I just feel it's a kind of respect for another human being really.

Yerroblemom1923 · 10/04/2026 09:20

No to the manky plughole and no to the oven. Oven cleaning is a specialised job needing certain chemicals which a cleaner probably won't have. We used a specialised oven cleaning guy who comes to do ours twice a year and he makes it look like new! It's a lengthy job that can't be done properly with a tin of Mr Muscle.
Also you need to communicate with your cleaner about your priorities. If skirting boards are one then mention it so they ensure that gets done. Don't insult them by asking them to clean your hair out of your plughole though!

WhoamItoday11 · 10/04/2026 09:34

That's a disgusting job and not one I would expect a cleaner to do. I just about gag doing it & it's my own hair. No way would I do that if I was a cleaner.

Westfacing · 10/04/2026 09:41

Like skid marks in the loo, plughole hair is related to personal hygiene - I think it's gross to leave this for a cleaning lady to deal with

There are just some things that you need to do yourself if physically able

Geez

I think people are talking about different things here.

I took plug hole hair to be just that which collects above the surface trap after a shower, that you can pick up and put in the bin?

Yet others are talking about removing parts of the drain and bleaching things, which sounds more like a yearly deep cleaning job.

I think taking the trap/plug out is what the op about.

Grannygherkin · 10/04/2026 09:55

Wow oh wow I think you are being very unreasonable!!! Firstly it takes 30 seconds after washing your hair to pull it out the plughole. I have fairly long hair and wash it weekly and clean it out immediately, why can't you?
Secondly I'm guessing there were 2 people who arrived to do the initial first clean. Sounds like you were expecting a deep clean. Do you seriously think you yourself personally could do a deep clean from ceilings to floor in 3hours on top floor and a further 3 hours on ground floor. You have a 4 bedroom house so it's considered large, and you expect them to crawl around on hands and knees wiping every inch of skirting by moving beds, cupboards etc etc plus wiping down blinds. By time they've dusted everywhere and hoovered lingering dust particles in the air would eventually settle making it look like they hadn't dusted.

IntheMoodforWong · 10/04/2026 10:00

I personally would not expect a cleaner to handle my bodily detritus like that. It's bad enough having to remove my own family's hair, poo on the toilet, etc., I would never dream of asking them to do it.

60andcounting · 10/04/2026 10:04

Yes they should. I'm a cleaner and I always clean the plugholes. If I'm short on time I would do this rather than dust the skirtings.
I have lovely customers but their plugholes are disgusting.

Yerroblemom1923 · 10/04/2026 11:47

Dusting blinds takes forever as well as you have to wipe over each individual slat!

ThatFairy · 10/04/2026 11:52

Eew no ! You clean your own plughole hair !

PokHas · 10/04/2026 12:01

Please can the posters tell me where cleaners charge minimum wage, I’d consider moving house. In my area it’s £20/per hour (way more than my hourly pay).

That is such a PITA job. Got to be one of my most hated

Usual agency cleaners only receive minimum wage but the company will charge you a lot more. It's always best to find a local SE cleaner via word of mouth. Good cleaners rarely need to advertise.

100% this!

And if you physically can't do it? What then?

You tell the cleaner you can’t physically do it and ask if they can add that to the jobs list

Take of the tax and NI from £20ph that’s down to around £16

EmeraldShamrock000 · 10/04/2026 15:29

No. Clean the shower tray, yes, not the drain.
The oven wouldn’t be included as it costs a lot more for an oven cleaning person than the cleaner.
Missing dust on blinds, it happens, my dog groomer misses bits of long stray hair. I just trim them.

gamerchick · 10/04/2026 15:32

You're supposed to leave your house, tidied and surfaces cleared. You speak about expectations right at the start and never assume.

Leaving hair in a plug hole for someone else to get rid of brings up pictures of a midden of a house.

That's still higher than the£12.44 befores tax

It is still higher correct, however a self employed cleaner will get no holiday or sickness pay. Someone on NMW that is employed will get both of those benefits

WearyLeader · 10/04/2026 16:34

And this is why, when a woman comes on here and says her DP is not pulling his weight, the answer cannot simply be: hire a cleaner. It’s not enough.

Wonder why an oven cleaning person is more expensive. And a gardener. Hmm. Could it be because usually they’re men?

I think that's one if those things, along with stripping beds and cleaning the skid marks in your loo, that you should do yourself.

This

Morepositivemum · 10/04/2026 16:55

Sorry op Id never ever expect someone too or take hair out of a plug hole (unless they were cleaning for someone fully incapacitated)
