I'm not convinced that nobody's standing up to him in private. He's signalled that the Iran war might not go on for much longer. There's a few possible explanations:

1. He genuinely believes he's that close to achieving total victory.
2. He's getting bored of the war already and just wants to give up.
3. Somebody close to him or high up in the military has made it clear that the war is a complete waste of time and money.

I don't want to rule out 1 or 2 but 3 seems like a reasonable possibility too.
