Sandwiches

Making myself some lunch yesterday asked DH if he would like anything to which he replied yes please can I have a couple of cheese sandwiches. I made them, 2 slices of bread as per normal cut in half. When he had finished them said thank you he asked , in curious not arsey way, how come when you make a couple of sandwiches you use 2 slices of bread but when you make a couple of toasties you use 4?
I actually don't know the answer. I guess it's probably because in a cafe it is written as toasted sandwich on the menu, whereas a cold sandwich is usually listed under sandwiches. Or am I just strange. He isn't worried either way but I am now left wondering if I am doing it differently to everyone else?

To me, one sandwich is two pieces of bread. If you cut it in half it’s half a sandwich. So a couple of sandwiches would be 4 pieces of bread and a couple of toasted sandwiches would be the same.

rubyslippers · 04/04/2026 12:08

A couple is two isn’t it?
if you sue two slices of bread then it’s one sandwich

so I would use four slices of bread for a couple of sandwiches or a couple of toasties

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · 04/04/2026 12:09

If I asked for a couple of sandwiches I'd expect 4 slices of bread.

2 slices makes one sandwich no matter how you cut it up afterwards.

InMySpareTime · 04/04/2026 12:09

A round of sandwiches or is two slices together, cut into either half or quarters. A round of toast is one slice cut into either half or quarters. I’ve never heard of “a couple of sandwiches” meaning one round of sandwiches, to me it would be four slices and two rounds at least (same as with toasties).

Negroany · 04/04/2026 12:11

No such thing as "half a sandwich".

Two bits of bread with something between is a sandwich.

On the menu you refer to, they say "sandwiches" because they offer more than one type, not because cutting it in half makes it two sandwiches (though it does, obviously).

YerMotherWasAHamster · 04/04/2026 12:12

A sandwich is 2 whole slices of bread, how you cut them is irrelevant. You gave him 1 sandwich, cut in half.

7238SM · 04/04/2026 12:13

He asked for 'a couple of cheese sandwiches' not 'one cheese sandwich'

I'd have used 4 slices of bread and made him 2 sandwiches. You just made one and cut it in half!

DalmationalAnthem · 04/04/2026 12:15

He asked for a couple of sandwiches, you made one.

Lemoncake13 · 04/04/2026 12:18

If he asked for a couple of cheese sandwich then I’d think he wanted four slices of bread.

You’ve made me fancy a cheese sandwich now.

InMySpareTime · 04/04/2026 12:20

A half sandwich is one slice cut into half with filling sandwiched between the two half pieces.
Half a sandwich is two slices filled then cut in half, and shared between two people.

Me too.

AlwaysLookOnTheBrightSideOfLife · 04/04/2026 12:21

4 slices for both. What I do wish would be standardised is a round of toast or bread and butter in a cafe. To me that's two slices, but several places recently have only given one when I've ordered a round, although my regular brunch haunt always gives two slices of toast.

Order a specific number of slices rather than the word round. I don't know what it means regarding bread, loads of other people probably don't either.

takeitawaygeraldine · 04/04/2026 12:29

One sandwich = 2 slices of bread.
If you cut it in two and only eat half of it you've eaten half a sandwich.

A couple of sandwiches = 2 sandwiches using 4 slices of bread

Your dh asked for a couple of cheese sandwiches but you gave him one sandwich.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 04/04/2026 12:40

Ok I guess I am doing it wrong then. Its rare we have lunch together at home and he has never complained or asked for more so I shall ask him exactly what he wants next time.

A couple to me means two. What you served was one sandwich cut in half.

BillieWiper · 04/04/2026 12:43

But in a cafe you order a single sandwich. Which has two slices of bread. You don't order two sandwiches and get one cut in half?!

A toastie and a sandwich both have two slices of bread. A couple of sandwiches does not mean one split down the middle.

It's on the menus as a round. I do now ask.

If it’s any comfort to you @sweeneytoddsrazorI thought the same as you. A ‘couple of sandwiches’ would be 2 slices of bread with the filling on the middle, cutting half. Turns out I’m also odd 🤷🏻‍♀️

Auroraloves · 04/04/2026 12:59

How does he make sandwiches?

a couple of sandwiches to me is 4 slices, but that would be enough for 2 people

ginasevern · 04/04/2026 13:25

I really don't understand your cafe and toasted sandwich analogy at all. Do you mean your local cafe gives you 2 toasted sandwiches (4 slices of bread) when you order one? If they do, they're very unusual. One sandwich is 2 pieces of bread with something in the middle (ham, cheese etc). It's also known as one "round" of sandwiches. Two sandwiches are made with 4 pieces of bread.

MsGreying · 04/04/2026 13:30

You'd have been asked in our house how many slices of bread you wanted.

My son just made his lunch: brioche buns with roast beef, yorkshire pudding and gravy.

tilypu · 04/04/2026 13:32

If he had asked for a cheese sandwich, what would you have given him?

A sandwich needs two slices of bread.

Unless it's a buffet in which case it's whatever portion the two slices have been cut into.

OttersOnAPlane · 04/04/2026 13:33

I'm with him - two slices of bread with a filling is one sandwich. "A couple of sandwiches" would be four slices of bread.

I agree. 2 slices of bread = 1 sandwich.
