Sandwiches

sweeneytoddsrazor · 04/04/2026 12:05

Making myself some lunch yesterday asked DH if he would like anything to which he replied yes please can I have a couple of cheese sandwiches. I made them, 2 slices of bread as per normal cut in half. When he had finished them said thank you he asked , in curious not arsey way, how come when you make a couple of sandwiches you use 2 slices of bread but when you make a couple of toasties you use 4?
I actually don't know the answer. I guess it's probably because in a cafe it is written as toasted sandwich on the menu, whereas a cold sandwich is usually listed under sandwiches. Or am I just strange. He isn't worried either way but I am now left wondering if I am doing it differently to everyone else?

You'd have been asked in our house how many slices of bread you wanted.

My son just made his lunch: brioche buns with roast beef, yorkshire pudding and gravy.

What? Your family doesn’t know that a sandwich is made up of 2 slices of bread? It’s like wanting a pair of trousers and being asked how many legs.

I can’t believe this thread, it’s got to be a wind up.

TakeTheCuntingQuichePatricia · 04/04/2026 13:43

2 slices of bread cut in half is one sandwich. Would you break a biscuit in half and say you have 2 biscuits?

Whettlettuce · 04/04/2026 14:44

You've given him 1 sandwich, he asked for a couple of sandwiches. 1 sandwich is 2 slices of bread used so a couple of sandwiches is 4 slices . You gave him 1 sandwich cut in half

Tryagain26 · 04/04/2026 15:11

I would call what you made one sandwich. Two sandwiches would be four slices of breads.

Negroany · 04/04/2026 12:11

No such thing as "half a sandwich".

Two bits of bread with something between is a sandwich.

On the menu you refer to, they say "sandwiches" because they offer more than one type, not because cutting it in half makes it two sandwiches (though it does, obviously).

Of course there is, if you have a sandwich and cut it into 4 , you've got 4 quarters of a sandwich. Eat 2 and you still have half a sandwich. You don't buy a loaf of bread cut down the middle...so every sandwich you make is a sandwich....you wouldn't cut each slice into four and butter individually....you start with a whole, then subdivide

Op your DH is right. You've been hoodwinked by meal deal sandwich(es) which should be illegal as you aren't getting a plural of sandwich but one sandwich cut in two

My god I don't think I've ever used the word sandwich so much🤣🤣

zantez · 04/04/2026 15:12

Four rounds of bread = two sandwiches in this house anyway!

weareallcats · 04/04/2026 15:23

You made one sandwich.

Justlovedogs · 04/04/2026 15:28

tealandteal · 04/04/2026 12:08

To me, one sandwich is two pieces of bread. If you cut it in half it’s half a sandwich. So a couple of sandwiches would be 4 pieces of bread and a couple of toasted sandwiches would be the same.

Edited

Same here. You made your DH a sandwich not a couple of sandwiches 🤷‍♀️

AngelicInnocent · 04/04/2026 16:28

Just out of interest OP. If he'd asked for "a cheese sandwich" what would you have given him?

Although I agree with most of your post, I disagree on your first point - I often make myself a sandwich with just one slice of bread, we call it an "Arthur", for 'alf a sandwich!

Bearbookagainandagain · 04/04/2026 16:50

Sorry, but yeah, that's weird...

bridgetreilly · 04/04/2026 16:59

I think if you are at the kind of buffet where there are platters of pre-cut sandwiches, then ‘one cheese sandwich’ might be the equivalent of one slice of bread, or even half a slice. But when you are making them, sandwiches have two slices of bread each.

YourJoyousDenimExpert · 04/04/2026 17:04

Being facetious really - but you could cut the round of sandwiches into three or four- and if I were a buffet and selected three different small sandwiches - I would still say I’d had three sandwiches!
OP’s husband is lucky she didn’t cut the sandwich into four and give him just two of the quarters - which could still have been ‘a couple of sandwiches’!😉
Just adding this in the spirit of amusement!!

CrispySquid · 04/04/2026 17:10

You gave your partner one sandwich cut in half, not a “couple of sandwiches”. One whole sandwich involves two slices of bread. This is the same for a normal sandwich or a toasted sandwich.

When you buy a meal deal in a shop or order a sandwich in a cafe, you get two slices of bread with filling in between (regardless of how it’s cut and presented).

I must admit, I don’t understand your sandwich/toasted sandwich analogy/reasoning at all!

Me too.

I'm with u OP. 2 sandwiches is 2 slices of bread.

I never use sliced bread to make sandwiches, usually ciabattas or bread cakes. I wouldn't be impressed if a cafe used sliced bread for a sandwich.

If someone wanted two sandwiches they'd get two of those or sent to the shop if they insisted on sliced bread.

I'm with u OP. 2 sandwiches is 2 slices of bread.

So when you make one sandwich do you only use one piece of bread?

This thread is eye opening. I would have thought it would be commonly agreed that two slices of bread makes a sandwich.

CrispySquid · 04/04/2026 17:37

This thread is wild

FazeleysRoyale · 04/04/2026 17:46

The word sandwich is starting to look wrong and weird now.

dudsville · 04/04/2026 17:50

I was surprised when I heard someone at work mention their sandwiches and it was one sandwich cut in half. I guess that does make it sandwiches, but to my mind a meal portion would be one sandwich, cut or not.

Yeah.
In my head i've started to pronounce it saMwich as well for some reason 🧐 Probably for a change 🤣

Im chuckling at 2 slices = 2 sandwiches. How?

BCBird · 04/04/2026 17:13

I'm with u OP. 2 sandwiches is 2 slices of bread.

How can it be 2 sandwiches?

To make a sandwich you get 2 slices of bread, place fillings on one slice and put the other slice on top, that is 1 sandwich. Even if you cut it in half or quarter it, it's still 1 sandwich.

When you order a sandwich in a cafe or shop they give you a sandwich, made up of 2 slices of bread, and charge you for this 1 sandwich. They don't charge you for 2 sandwiches just because they've sliced your sandwich in half so that it's easier to eat.

AnneShirleyBlythe · 04/04/2026 18:01

Pmsl as we actually had a ‘debate’ about this in our family group chat recently 🤣
It got quite heated but 2 slices of bread = 1 sandwich won in the end!

What were some of the counter arguments? I genuinely thought this was something that wasn't really up for debate. It's like arguing a pair of shoes isn't one shoe for each foot. Confused
