Would you follow this rule?

Staying at a holiday house, the rules mention 'no food or drink to be taken upstairs' - would you follow it?

YABU - I'm on holiday, I'm having a cup of tea in bed and I'm old enough not to make a mess

YANBU - rules are rules, I'll do as I'm told

All you posters who say you would never eat in bed or have food upstairs, have your children never made you breakfast in bed for Mother's day or your partner never brought you a cup of tea and some toast on your birthday? 😬

Breakfast in bed on Mothers Day did happen a handful of times when the kids were small. DH would never bring me food in bed for my birthday as neither of us like it. I have very very very occasionally got myself tea and gone back to bed, but I honestly can't remember the last time. I genuinely just prefer to have it at the kitchen table. It has a better view!

It's something I did in my room as a teen/student when I didn't have a whole place to myself. But it the last 30 years of being an independent adult with my own house, it's been a once a year event, if that.

NoSoupForU · 03/04/2026 15:28

I'd have a bottle of water because I often wake up during the night thirsty.

But otherwise, yes I'd follow it. I don't take food and drink to bed at home so wouldn't be doing it elsewhere.

It's this sort of hospitable mindset that would make you an absolutely cracking amateur Airbnb host 😂

To be honest, if I did run an Airbnb, that wouldn’t be a rule I’d have. But I respect other people’s right to decide on their own rules. I suppose I can’t imagine being so determined to have my tea and toast in bed at all costs. Maybe I should try it😅

CoastalCalm · 03/04/2026 15:30

Seeing how common it seems to be among young people to eat takeaways in bed on social media I can understand the rule but I would have to have water by my bed regardless

Elphamouche · 03/04/2026 15:33

I’d be taking water, but at home we don’t have anything other than water or squash upstairs. Not as a rule, we just don’t.

I think most people have no issue with rules provided they are flagged upfront. It's trying to impose a rule after you've pocketed the cash that's unreasonable.

Conniebygaslight · 03/04/2026 15:39

No I wouldn’t miss my coffee in bed for anyone. I wouldn’t eat in bed though. We’re always very careful to leave accommodation really clean afterwards, our friends rent out an Airbnb and have some absolutely horrendous problems. Things stolen, pulled off walls, smeared walls in the loo….absolutely awful.

HopeFor2026 · 03/04/2026 15:41

No I wouldn't follow this rule, however I get thirsty at night so would mainly be water on the bedside table.
I wouldn't be bringing a curry up to bed anyway or even a tea as I think that's common sense when you are staying somewhere. When I'm up for the day I'm not usually hanging around the bedroom.

IglesiasPiggl · 03/04/2026 15:44

I would take a cup of tea and a biscuit upstairs, I wouldn't eat a meal up there. But I don't generally eat upstairs anyway so it would essentially be the same as I do at home anyway.

The UK Consumer Rights Act 2015 states that all rules and regulations in online transactions must be available for perusal no more than one click away from the main page. This is so that purchases may make an informed purchasing decision before clicking the PAY button. Any terms and conditions which are not available in this manner are not legal and cannot be enforced. So all those shitty little rules and regulations which you find on a laminated care on arrival can be ignored.

DoraSpenlow · 03/04/2026 15:50

Rileysp · 03/04/2026 14:24

What exactly are you expecting them to be drinking? Cooking oil?

worst case scenario just get a stain remover😂

The amount of liquid in a cup of mug of tea/coffee goes a long way. Yes, you can get stain remover but are you going to leave the owner with a damp bed/carpet to sort out before the next guests arrive?

It also doesn’t matter if it is in the t&cs since it’s such an unreasonable expectation it can’t be enforced

What do you think happens when someone spills something downstairs?

No hairdryer?

olivepicanto · 03/04/2026 15:53

Of course I would. We don't have food or drink upstairs at home.

Alpacajigsaw · 03/04/2026 12:22

I don’t tend to take food and drink upstairs but no I wouldn’t purposely follow it. I’m paying for the rental and they presumably factor cost of cleaning into it. We always clean up anyway before we leave, I bet plenty of people leave a mess even downstairs.

So, if you were a smoker and you were asked not to smoke indoors, you'd do it anyway, just because, well, how dare they?

DoraSpenlow · 03/04/2026 15:59

Wildgoat · 03/04/2026 14:36

Doesn’t the same go for downstairs if you spill tea on the sofa or carpet? I’m really not getting it, it’s not like downstairs is stain proofed and upstairs is some unique stainable environment. Unless you’re saying if you rent an air b n b you all take it in turns to eat and drink over the sink.

very odd.

Accidents where people are expected to be eating and drinking are totally different to eating and drinking and making a mess in bedrooms, especially when you have specifically been asked not to do it. It's not that difficult to understand surely.

Would you be happy getting into bed and finding the mattress damp? Would you wonder what caused the dampness? Tea? Water? Piss?

Smoking is completely different. It’s illegal in public places and hotel rooms. Smokers are used to not smoking on most places. It can hardly be compared to eating.

Why is it different? What’s the difference between a cup of tea spilt on the landing carpet vs the sitting room carpet?

gostickyourheadinapig · 03/04/2026 16:04

Is there also a rule about where in the house you can have sex and what kind of sex?

TheChosenTwo · 03/04/2026 16:05

I’d have my water bottle by the side of the bed and I don’t drink hot drinks, the idea of having food in bed is grim to me so would never do that unless I guess in hospital/bedbound or another situation in which there was no alternative.

So I technically I would break the rules because my water would be upstairs but it has a lid!

Downstairs floors and furniture are usually more robust. Tiled or laminate floors, stain-resistant sofas, etc. It is easily mopped up.

Carpets and bedding upstairs less so.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 03/04/2026 16:12

We only eat in the kitchen so it wouldn't occur to me to take food or drink anywhere else.

5128gap · 03/04/2026 16:19

I would with the exception of a glass of bedside water, as that's what I do anyway.
I think if you decide not to it's a gamble. Because if there's no mishap they'll be none the wiser, but if you spill sonething they'll come after you for the costs. They are basically telling you that food or drink related damage/cleaning is not covered for upstairs so if you spill, expect a bill. And bad feedback.
