Staying at a holiday house, the rules mention 'no food or drink to be taken upstairs' - would you follow it?

YABU - I'm on holiday, I'm having a cup of tea in bed and I'm old enough not to make a mess

YANBU - rules are rules, I'll do as I'm told

I'd feel peachy if they'd handed over close to a grand for the privilege of staying in my home.

I'd happily go out and buy new sheets.

They can have ours for a week and do anything they like for a grand.

Flamingojune · 05/04/2026 18:24

No fluids allowed upstairs apart from sex ones?

I expect if their rules are so stringent, you shouldn't be doing that, either.

LikeGolddust · 06/04/2026 04:05

As this seems to be an AirBnB - it's a completely ridiculous request.

They hire out a property for money. The cost of damages is part of business.
If they don't want their property subject to wear and tear or run the risk of damage - do not let it out.

MemorableLlama · 06/04/2026 07:23

We rent holiday properties all the time. (We’re in an Airbnb at the moment). I’ve never seen that rule. It’s ridiculous.

Me too. Except drinking water or having a mint I can't see why people would like to eat in bed. Unless they change the sheets every day?

I have yogurt in bed every morning (medication & long term health issues) why would I need to change the sheets?? I'm not 2 years old.

We brought our daughter up to eat at the dining table. She has never expressed a wish to eat a meal in bed.

Why do people drink tea in bed? If you're awake, why wouldn't you get up to drink your tea? You can just as easily (probably more easily) drink tea sitting in a chair.

In the winter while the house warms up. I don't set it to turn on before I'm awake as it wakes me up. In summer I prefer to open the French doors and sit in the morning sun.

Take a travel cup up with you! A cuppa in bed is one of the great pleasures of holiday, surely.

Nah. If I knew in advance I just wouldn't book it. If I didn't know in advance, I'd carry on as I woukd at home. I'm 57 & have never made a mess, so I doubt I'm suddenly going to.

FaceIt · 06/04/2026 10:05

YANBU it’s not your home.

Would you have replaced the bedding or the carpet if you’d accidentally poured a cup of tea all over it?

I’ve done it myself over a cream linen bedroom chair. Accidents do happen.

FaceIt · 06/04/2026 10:07

Should have been YABU

But it is your home for that period you’re staying in it, isn’t it? That’s what you pay for.

clearly that doesn’t extend to trashing it etc. but if you’re renting out your home for financial gain then letting people live in it as they see fit (within reason) comes with the territory

this is well within reasonable use as well. To drink or eat upstairs.

If you were an airbnb host why wouldn't you have mattress protectors on the bed?

Carpet might need cleaning if my hand cleaning didn't work, it wouldn't need replacing! 🙄

in 57 years I've managed not to make a mess, so not sure why I would in a HH. But if I did I'd pay to remedy any problems.

So, if you were a smoker and you were asked not to smoke indoors, you'd do it anyway, just because, well, how dare they?

Ridiculous comparison, as you well know.

TrashHeap · 04/04/2026 11:43

How would you feel if someone came into your home and ignored a rule, even if they found it ridiculous?

I don't set rules for my guests, let alone ridiculous ones.

Not sure if you were asking me ir someone else?

I wouldn't be balancing a cup of tea on a cream chair, but as I already said, I would pay to have anything cleaned I was unable to clean myself.

It's really simple, I make a cup of tea and take it back to bed with me because my bed is soft, squishy, warm, and has an amazing view looking out over the surrounding countryside, from which I can watch the sunrise. Compared to downstairs, which is cold and dark at that time of the morning.

It's really not that mysterious, I'm sure other people have got equally compelling reasons.

That sounds lovely!👍🏻💕

i don't have a lively view, but I do have a lively warm bed which I appreciate in winter

We run a holiday let- how on earth do they intend to police that rule?
Most people manage to not make a mess- but some do. Red wine split all over the stairs wall (tripped on the way upstairs) , cocopops, sticky sweets, yogurt in, on and under the bed (I blame the parents) , “accidents” and I don’t mean from babies (thank god for waterproof mattress protection) , half eaten sandwiches/chips/pizza under the pillow - It all comes out in the wash, I grumble when it happens, but for every grotty changeover there are 10 that are left pretty decent.

This, btw, is why I allow 10-4 to clean. Repainting, scrubbing off dried weetabix, ect all takes time!

Urgh that's disgusting! But I assume the people that would do that would also ignore any 'rules' anyway!

Well that's me told. I'm surprised you didn't add "young lady".
My question still stands, particularly as it wasn't asked of you anyway.

Ilovelurchers · 06/04/2026 12:04

It's interesting how many people would follow a rule that is:
A) pointless
B) nobody could ever possibly know you had broken it
C) would inconvenience them. (Only to a minor extent, admittedly)

I assume they are coming from a mindset that a rule imposed by a property owner has a kind of moral force, while you are in that property. You hear on here a lot "my house, my rules"

I don't think in that way, so I would make a judgement based on my own risk calculation/sense or what it right or wrong. The views of the property owner would not automatically dictate my actions. I wouldn't take food upstairs if I thought there was a serious risk of spillage, as I think it's wrong to wantonly damage people's stuff. But the simplr fact that they had written it as a rule wouldn't prevent me, if that makes sense?

I'm not saying that's right or that other are wrong. It's just interesting to me.

TheignT · 06/04/2026 12:10

If I get migraine warning I need two paracetamol and a sweet drink as quickly as possible so I need the sweet drink by my bed or I lie there half awake before I get up to deal with it.

ReneePaloma · 06/04/2026 12:12

I wouldn’t follow it. I’ve never been keen on following rules I don’t agree with.

JHound · 06/04/2026 12:13

It’s somebody else’s home. I cannot imagine refusing to follow the rules in somebody else’s home.

If it’s an issue stay elsewhere.

It isn’t anyone’s home. It’s a commercial venture and if you stay there you’re a customer.

It’s a holiday home. So somebody is allowing their home to be used by holiday makers. They can have whatever rules they want. Find another holiday home.

Simple.
