Would you follow this rule?

Staying at a holiday house, the rules mention 'no food or drink to be taken upstairs' - would you follow it?

YABU - I'm on holiday, I'm having a cup of tea in bed and I'm old enough not to make a mess

YANBU - rules are rules, I'll do as I'm told

I would take water upstairs. That's all. I take upstairs at home and I like to have a glass by the bed

Itsmetheflamingo · 03/04/2026 14:31

Fuck me, there are some over excited bootlickers on this thread 😆

no, I wouldn’t follow this “rule”

Walkinglikegroucho · 03/04/2026 14:33

Im generally quite rule abiding but with this, I would think they have implemented it to minimise risk.

They know it isn't going to be followed 100% but it will make people more cautious and careful and obviously, as shown here, will actually stop a large proportion of people doing it.

If I were sleeping upstairs, my glass of squash would have to come with me as I drink it overnight.

I dont think we generally eat or drink upstairs otherwise though.

It boggles your mind that disabled people can go on holiday?

Bed bound people yes, I had a family member who was bed bound towards the end of his life and couldnt even leave the room without aids and multiple carers

Does bed bound have an alternative meaning I'm not aware of?

Will you get the mattress replaced and the carpet professionally cleaned before you leave? What about any furniture that may be stained? What if the accident happened on the morning you were leaving and more guests were arriving in the afternoon? Would they have to put up with a damp bed?

Doesn’t the same go for downstairs if you spill tea on the sofa or carpet? I’m really not getting it, it’s not like downstairs is stain proofed and upstairs is some unique stainable environment. Unless you’re saying if you rent an air b n b you all take it in turns to eat and drink over the sink.

very odd.

GreaterCassowary · 03/04/2026 14:44

With respect to the 'bedbound' discussion, some conditions can leave people bedbound on a fluctuating (and often unexpected) basis. Those people are still allowed to go on holiday. HTH.

Reasonstobelieve · 03/04/2026 14:45

Yes,with the exception of water.

sallymonella · 03/04/2026 14:47

I've just stayed in an Airbnb which had this rule, which I only discovered when I arrived. I ignored it, no way am I not drinking my morning tea in bed, particularly as the bedroom had the most amazing view.

LovePoppy · 03/04/2026 14:56

ConstitutionHill · 03/04/2026 12:02

Well, you say "Holiday Home" so I'm guessing you are paying for the privilege? In which case I would be having a cup of tea upstairs.

Would you also smoke in a no smoking place because you’re paying for it?

igelkott2026 · 03/04/2026 14:57

I'd take water up but nothing else.

Although the last time I visited my mum I had a glass of water next to the bed and I put it on the floor so I wouldn't knock it off the bedside table, but her bed is higher than mine and I mis-judged how far away the floor was and dropped the glass.

So don't do it unless you are 100% sure you won't spill anything!

Pancakeflipper · 03/04/2026 14:57

I'd take up my glass of water for bedtime.
I wouldn't see the need to eat up there. But I like to read in bed with my water.

Ineffable23 · 03/04/2026 14:59

I would work on the basis that I needed to follow the spirit of the rule - no spillages or crumbs upstairs. White wine, alright. Red wine, no. Tea, probably fine. Toast, no. Etc etc.

Surely if that’s a possibility for someone, one of the things on their list of requirements would be the option of eating in bed. Always good to check ahead if it’s a need rather than a want.

Otherwise, can’t believe all the pathetic whining on here about HAVING to drink tea/eat toast in bed. Ooo, I simply MUST! Seriously, grow up.

MyDeftDuck · 03/04/2026 12:22

I’d follow the rule…….we don’t allow food and drink upstairs, apart from a glass of water.

FFS people will be wanting to smoke in bed net!

I am sure people do, so I hope those who let holiday homes have good insurance!

Mumandcarer80 · 03/04/2026 15:02

Yes I would though I have this rule in my own house anyway with the exception of a water bottle I take up to bed with me.

No desire to 'grow up' if that means I can't have a lovely cup of coffee in bed while I do my Wordle, Quordle and Xordle before getting up to face the day 😊

BennyHenny · 03/04/2026 15:03

Nope, I’d ignore that rule without a second thought, unless it had been disclosed before I booked it.

Moonlightfrog · 03/04/2026 15:04

I would follow the rule but I am not a person that feels the need to have a cup of tea in bed and definitely wouldn’t eat in bed.

It's this sort of hospitable mindset that would make you an absolutely cracking amateur Airbnb host 😂

99victoria · 03/04/2026 15:19

All you posters who say you would never eat in bed or have food upstairs, have your children never made you breakfast in bed for Mother's day or your partner never brought you a cup of tea and some toast on your birthday? 😬

paddyclampofthethirdkind · 03/04/2026 15:23

Drinks (water only for kids) I would do but I don’t have food in the bedroom.

Aiming4Optimistic · 03/04/2026 15:23

No I wouldn't follow that rule. People who want to profit from renting out their houses, have to understand that people are paying them a significant amount of money, so they can enjoy their holiday. It isn't the guest's responsibility to do housework or behave as if the owner is doing them some huge favour by allowing them to be there!
Bow obviously a guest should not cause damage to a property, but normal wear and tear and a bit of spilled coffee, comes with the territory of leading out a holiday home. Owners who can't cope with that, shouldn't put their property to this use.

pinkspeakers · 03/04/2026 15:23

Yes i would, other than water. It's their house and you need to respect their rules.

I never take any food or drink other than water into my bedroom anyway, so it's not exactly an issue for me.

No. My children are now adults and they have never made me breakfast in bed. I don’t have a partner so no one brings me a cup of tea. I would never consider eating or drinking in bed other than when I have been unwell and needed water next to my bed. We have a ‘no food upstairs rule’ though to be fair….I am the only one that sticks too it, my dc definitely eat and drink in their rooms.

Aquamarineteal · 03/04/2026 15:24

I wouldn't take food upstairs, but no drink is too harsh. I always take a drink to bed with me and never spill it.
