Would you follow this rule?

Staying at a holiday house, the rules mention 'no food or drink to be taken upstairs' - would you follow it?

YABU - I'm on holiday, I'm having a cup of tea in bed and I'm old enough not to make a mess

YANBU - rules are rules, I'll do as I'm told

Yes. Or good luck explaining after spilling the tea. It does happen.

Pretend it's poo.

I would have no problem following it because the idea of eating or drinking in bed makes me boak. 🤢

Me too. Except drinking water or having a mint I can't see why people would like to eat in bed. Unless they change the sheets every day?

No I wouldn’t. I’m not paying for a house to be told where I can eat or drink.

paying to borrow something does not give you the right to treat that thing however you like.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 03/04/2026 12:11

Whilst I agree with my house my rules in principle, I think it's risky to assume that everyone will follow them and you should factor that into the price/take a deposit.

This is why I despise Airbnb type of lettings because a hotel would allow you to eat a dominos pizza in bed and im paying for that privilege - the fact that it's your home is not a me problem and you chose to rent out your home out to strangers.

Poppinjay · 03/04/2026 12:12

If the rule was communicated pre-booking, it's on me and I would follow it.

If the rule was only communicated once we had arrived, I'd follow it if it wasn't too disruptive.

We once arrived at a dog-friendly cottage to find a sign that said no dogs upstairs. That would have been a deal breaker if we'd known at booking because one of our party has an assistance dog that they need in the same room. The dog slept in the bedroom and we vacuumed carefully before leaving.

This is why I hate the idea of air bnbs. I don’t pay good money to go somewhere and have to follow rules probably imposed for someone else’s stupidity. I’d ignore personally.

Hotels are famously rule-free, of course.

I consider myself to have a problem with authority in general but it's quite extreme to stamp your foot about a perfectly normal holiday accommodation rule.

AllFours · 03/04/2026 12:12

Our home has rooms other than bedrooms that are ‘upstairs’. When people claim to not take any food or drink ‘upstairs’ in their own homes, does this just refer to bedrooms? Or would this blanket ban of ‘no food/drink upstairs’ include living areas and offices on upper floors? Purely out of curiosity, what does ‘upstairs’ actually mean in this food/drink context?

(Typed while enjoying a coffee in bed at noon)

Boustany · 03/04/2026 12:14

Nope, not following that one unless it had been specifically flagged pre-booking. Amateur Airbnbers really are the worst.

CallingOnTheMegaphone · 03/04/2026 12:14

I'd ignore it.

The owner is not lending the house out of the kindness of their heart. It's a business, guests presumably pay good money for it.

OhFuckyNell · 03/04/2026 12:15

I'd be completely ignoring it based on the face that it's bat shit crazy

glass of wine whilst showering/getting ready? ✔️
cup of tea when I get back whilst getting for bed? ✔️
herbal tea whilst getting ready to go out for the day? ✔️

and no I can't just 'go without' either

I'm responsible and would of course clean up/replace whatever etc etc in the 1 billion percent chance it could/should/may happen

✔️

Wow this is eye-opening, I'm genuinely surprised at the fuck you attitudes. I had thought about hosting out my house when I'm away but I definitely won't now.

Disrespectful in the extreme.

Well, good job you found out before you let your house out to awful people who like to have a cup of tea in bed eh? 😂

Indianajet · 03/04/2026 12:19

If I want to drink my coffee in bed I will - if I am on holiday I want to relax and for me that would be part of it.

reversegear · 03/04/2026 12:20

I would I assume they meant don’t eat a takeout curry in bed, not a glass of water and a biscuit, but other than water I would follow the rules.

Viviennemary · 03/04/2026 12:20

I think no food is fair enough. But no drink is a bit draconian.

youalright · 03/04/2026 12:20

Yes as we don't have food upstairs at home anyway so wouldn't really be a big ask.

Alpacajigsaw · 03/04/2026 12:22

I don’t tend to take food and drink upstairs but no I wouldn’t purposely follow it. I’m paying for the rental and they presumably factor cost of cleaning into it. We always clean up anyway before we leave, I bet plenty of people leave a mess even downstairs.

MyDeftDuck · 03/04/2026 12:22

I’d follow the rule…….we don’t allow food and drink upstairs, apart from a glass of water.

FFS people will be wanting to smoke in bed net!

RNApolymerase · 03/04/2026 12:22

I would not follow the rule. It isn't a holiday if I can't have a cup of tea in bed in the morning.

It's very naive to assume that everyone will be exactly like you - no offence.
Despite what I said up post about eating pizza in bed, that was just an example of what kind of person you may be renting your property to - not what I would do.

ACynicalDad · 03/04/2026 12:23

I’d take tea up, but that would probably be my limit. I expect their problems are with people taking a full meal up.

If you let your house out for a market rate, you need to tell people in advance if you're going to impose rules which are out of the ordinary. If you want to be paid as a business, act like a business.
