Would you follow this rule?

Staying at a holiday house, the rules mention 'no food or drink to be taken upstairs' - would you follow it?

YABU - I'm on holiday, I'm having a cup of tea in bed and I'm old enough not to make a mess

YANBU - rules are rules, I'll do as I'm told

Of course I would follow it. It’s someone else’s home and while I’m an adult and old enough not to make a mess, mistakes happen and could easily spill the tea.

ShetlandishMum · 03/04/2026 11:49

Yes. Or good luck explaining after spilling the tea. It does happen.

AllFours · 03/04/2026 11:51

No, I would not follow that rule. I’m an adult - if there’s an accident and I spill tea upstairs then I’m fully capable of cleaning up or replacing anything that is damaged.

applescentedcandle · 03/04/2026 11:53

I would respect the rule except for a glass of water which I'd be careful with.

I imagine they've had to deal with a lot of mess before making that rule!

WinterBlues26 · 03/04/2026 11:53

Yes I would follow it as I don't have food upstairs at home anyway.

I'm assuming you agreed to it when you booked/paid for the accommodation?

Dermatologically · 03/04/2026 11:53

Yes I would. Its not exactly a big ask.

Didimum · 03/04/2026 11:56

Don’t like the rules that someone’s for their own property, then don’t book the property. You’re not entitled to your own rules.

Ellie1015 · 03/04/2026 11:56

I probably would have a coffee upstairs, but would limit it to one morning coffee and I would not allow kids to have anything upstairs. Also would be prepared to clean and pay if I did spill.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 03/04/2026 11:58

No I would not they would have to tear my 4 or 5 am-ish take-it-back-to-bed tea out of my cold dead hands. ☕️

WappityWabbit · 03/04/2026 11:59

I live in a touristy area and have friends who let out their nearby holiday accommodation.

I don’t think they have that particular rule but sadly, a few guests cause serious mayhem and damage, won’t give a toss and ruin it for everyone else.

If you’re the sort of person who will make immediate amends if you do accidentally spill anything or cause damage, then crack on and eat and drink upstairs.

RoyalPenguin · 03/04/2026 12:00

I don't take food or drink upstairs anyway so it would be easy for me to follow this rule.

NormasArse · 03/04/2026 12:00

I’d probably take a glass of water up.

99victoria · 03/04/2026 12:00

No I wouldn't. I like to have a cup of coffee in bed before I get up and start the day. I've been doing it for years and never managed to have a disastrous accident!

To be honest - I don't tend to read the rules if there are loads of them. You wouldn't know about silly rules like this before you booked - owners tend to put them in handbooks for you to read when you arrive. No hotel I have ever stayed in has told me I can't have food or drink in my bedroom

Chickadiddy · 03/04/2026 12:01

I would have no problem following it because the idea of eating or drinking in bed makes me boak. 🤢

7238SM · 03/04/2026 12:01

I don't take food/hot drinks up to my bedroom so wouldn't do it in someone else's house either!

ConstitutionHill · 03/04/2026 12:02

Well, you say "Holiday Home" so I'm guessing you are paying for the privilege? In which case I would be having a cup of tea upstairs.

GreenLemonade · 03/04/2026 12:02

If I was a paying guest I wouldn't follow it. I wouldn't eat anything messy in bed but I would take a snack or a drink upstairs if I felt like it. It sounds like the owner of the holiday let is in the wrong business if they can't cope with perfectly normal behaviour.

Duvetdayneeded · 03/04/2026 12:04

It’s an un reasonable rule. Yes to a tea or coffee, but use common sense and not have a curry sitting on the white carpet!

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 03/04/2026 12:04

No I wouldn’t. I’m not paying for a house to be told where I can eat or drink.

MrsTravelBug · 03/04/2026 12:04

I would break the rule for my morning coffee but wouldn’t take any other food or drinks upstairs.

If I spill it, I clean it/pay for it.

gannett · 03/04/2026 12:05

I would take my bedside water up (though on holiday would be using my water bottle rather than a glass, so less chance of spillage) and I would not really think about taking a non-messy snack upstairs (like an energy bar). Other than that I'm happy to follow this extremely unobjectionable nothingburger of a rule and not find myself having to clean up juice stains or crumbs.

UnhappyHobbit · 03/04/2026 12:05

This is why I hate the idea of air bnbs. I don’t pay good money to go somewhere and have to follow rules probably imposed for someone else’s stupidity. I’d ignore personally.

Fends · 03/04/2026 12:06

I have water through the night so no I wouldn’t follow the rule

gannett · 03/04/2026 12:06

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 03/04/2026 12:04

No I wouldn’t. I’m not paying for a house to be told where I can eat or drink.
