Staying at a holiday house, the rules mention 'no food or drink to be taken upstairs' - would you follow it?

YABU - I'm on holiday, I'm having a cup of tea in bed and I'm old enough not to make a mess

YANBU - rules are rules, I'll do as I'm told

We stayed in an Airbnb in Scotland once with the rule. I ignored it completely as I can’t actually get out of bed before I have my morning tea!

Theredjellybean · 03/04/2026 13:05

If it was stated in description that I could see pre booking i would not book it.
If it was a rule in a handbook after i had booked and arrived I would cheerfully ignore it.
I am paying to rent the house and expect to be able to use it fully, if that means I want coffee and croissant in bed then so be it.
If people are that precious about their holiday homes don't rent them out.
As for damage to carpets etc - well that is what you pay a deposit for

Problems with editing my post - kept crashing . Radioactive rather than a “hyperactive “ sauce Blush

zingally · 03/04/2026 13:08

I've never been a one for taking a hot drink to have in bed away, so that wouldn't bother me.
I would however be taking a glass of water up to bed, regardless of rules. I often wake up in the night, parched, and I need something. That being said though, I'd probably be more likely to take my water bottle up, rather than a glass, as less likely to knock that over when fumbling in the dark in an unfamiliar room.

AirborneElephant · 03/04/2026 13:09

No, of course not. I have a water by my bed at night and a coffee in bed in the morning before getting up. I’m not going to stop that on holiday. I’d keep food downstairs, but then I’d do that anyway.

weirdoboelady · 03/04/2026 13:10

Rule advised when booking, or rule which came as a surprise on arrival?

If a, then yes - I signed up for this.
If b - you have to be fucking joking!

PuzzledObserver · 03/04/2026 13:11

It wouldn’t occur to me to take food or drink upstairs in holiday accommodation, because I don’t do it at home.

ItsNotMeEither · 03/04/2026 13:12

I'm on the fence. Tea and toast for me, I'd break the rule.

Kids, I'd tell them no food upstairs, but I would allow them water by the bed.

Yet another one post bitch plop and run op

hazelberry · 03/04/2026 13:14

I wouldn't follow the no drinks upstairs rule.

youbizarrehorse · 03/04/2026 13:16

I would absolutely follow the rule. It’s not your house. If you had to have a cup of tea in bed so badly, you should have made it a priority and found someone who was ok with that. I’m an adult too and I have spilt plenty of food and drink over the years. Accidents happen and there’s no way of knowing when or how. That’s why they’re accidents. Nobody deliberately spills a cup of tea on the upholstery or carpet. FFS wise up🙄

If the rule was communicated pre-booking, it's on me and I would follow it.

If the rule was only communicated once we had arrived, I'd follow it if it wasn't too disruptive.

We once arrived at a dog-friendly cottage to find a sign that said no dogs upstairs. That would have been a deal breaker if we'd known at booking because one of our party has an assistance dog that they need in the same room. The dog slept in the bedroom and we vacuumed carefully before leaving.

We had the same once, except the house was “upside down” with the lounge/kitchen upstairs so was essentially saying no dogs in the living areas. And there was an extra rule about dogs in the bedrooms too. No way we’d have booked such a house if it was clear before! So we ignored them and don’t feel bad about it.

RappelChoan · 03/04/2026 13:18

Like fuck would I.

What kind of holiday doesn’t include coffee in bed in the morning.

MagneticSquirrel · 03/04/2026 13:18

Depends - if the rule was clear before booking then I wouldn’t have booked it.

If only found out about no food upstairs rule after arrival then I wouldn’t be following it at all no.

Too many daft rules at many holiday homes and air bnbs, this is another example, I can’t see how it’s a holiday having to clean up before departure, strip bedding, take your own supplies of loo roll sometimes etc.

DiscoBeat · 03/04/2026 13:19

I would take water but not food, no. I respect other people's property and would hope others would do the same

Manxexile · 03/04/2026 13:19

To me the answer is obvious.

If the rules were disclosed to me before I made the booking then I'm bound by them and I'd keep to them.

If I don't like those rules I book somewhere else.

But if the rules aren't disclosed to me until after i've made the booking then they do not form part of the contract and i'm not bound to follow them

Driftingawaynow · 03/04/2026 13:23

No and I wouodnt feel guilty either

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 03/04/2026 13:23

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 03/04/2026 11:58

No I would not they would have to tear my 4 or 5 am-ish take-it-back-to-bed tea out of my cold dead hands. ☕️

I know this isn’t the point of the thread but why DOES that 4am-5am “take a hot cup of tea back to bed” cup of tea feel so lush?

dudsville · 03/04/2026 13:24

I wouldn't. If I saw this in the description of the holiday rental's advertising pages then I wouldn't have booked it. If it wasn't mentioned at that time and was something I learned only upon arrival then I would ignore it and clean up after myself, as I would do anyway, if needed. A great joy for us every day is having a pot of tea and breakfast in bed. I expect my tremendous skills, honed to perfection over years of practice at home, to be employed in any rental with an equal or greater degree of thoughtfulness.

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 03/04/2026 13:28

TheBlueKoala · 03/04/2026 12:06

Me too. Except drinking water or having a mint I can't see why people would like to eat in bed. Unless they change the sheets every day?

Same. I really don’t get the attraction of eating and drinking in bed.

In terms of this specific rule, though, I’d ignore it to the extent of bringing a bottle of water upstairs, simply because I’m on medication that I need to take first thing in the morning and sometimes overnight.

GreaterCassowary · 03/04/2026 13:34

I stay in bed until I've eaten and drunk every single day because I have POTS and getting up before my blood pressure has stabilised makes me really unwell. So no, I wouldn't be following that rule.

Bristolandlazy · 03/04/2026 13:39

I don't take food upstairs at home but if I'm renting a holiday place that seems unreasonable, some people like to drink tea and toast in bed in sure.

FFSToEverythingSince2020 · 03/04/2026 13:23

YY! It's that moment of 'fuck, I have to get up for work ... OH, NO, NO I DO NOT!' Grin

I love it.

allthingsinmoderation · 03/04/2026 13:46

I probably would follow the rule but,how would anyone know if you didn't follow this rule? Unless you spill and leave stain damage.
