Been seeing someone for about a month. He has a dark, twisted sense of humour (as do I). Showed him a TikTok where the woman jokes about “shagging his dad and making him the stepson” so I cracked a joke that I’d do the same. He laughed along then said “I have a joke but I can’t say”

as a lot of people do, I was like “no just say it”

the joke?

”I could shag your 16 year old daughter”

this crossed a line to me; but his response was that he was never going to say it, I’d dragged it out of him. He said I shouldn’t be joking about his dad….

to me it feels different. So I said it’s not ok, she’s a child to which he said “not a child. She’s legal”

I can’t imagine most normal men joking like this.

hes never met my children. Doesn’t have any of his own. He’s 35 years old.

AIBU - its just a bad joke you made him say
YNBU - leave

You started it.

ElizabethVonArnim · 02/04/2026 16:21

Yeah, but really - you should finish it.

BarbiesDreamHome · 02/04/2026 16:25

You're both just disgusting.

You say yours is a dark joke but his was too far. Be less gross and you'll date less gross men.

Jellybunny98 · 02/04/2026 16:25

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes

arethereanyleftatall · 02/04/2026 16:26

Yes, I would leave a 1 month new bloke over this. Any adult who thinks it’s ok to shag a 16 year old child because the law - which is there for 16 year olds to shag each other, not adults - says so, is not someone I’d want to spend time with.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 02/04/2026 16:26

Neither joke was funny but he is talking about a child. The fact that he doubled down is what’s off putting.

Blueunicornthistle · 02/04/2026 16:27

I have no idea why you would think that TikTok was funny or appropriate but after the “she’s legal” comment yes, I would end it.

Swiftie1878 · 02/04/2026 16:27

You’re both pretty gross, tbh.
His ‘joke’ is worse than yours, but you reap what you sow.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 02/04/2026 16:27

It’s a grim unfunny joke but you pretty much said the same kind of gross thing to him. You’re just sensitive because your 16 year old actually seems viable whereas his dad doesn’t. It’s clear he knew it was too far but you still wanted to hear it!

midgetastic · 02/04/2026 16:27

I think you started it and then pushed

Catwalking · 02/04/2026 16:29

surely you expected the 2nd joke to be worse than the 1st?
& really yours had two nasties, whereas his only had the 1, imo.

You only get what you give out…

Katflapkit · 02/04/2026 16:29

You did start it but then he said what he did and doubled down on the 'she's not a kid, she's legal' you have to end it because you will never feel easy with him being in close proximity.

Overthebow · 02/04/2026 16:29

You started it, but I’d leave him anyway.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/04/2026 16:31

Ugh. You both need to work on what constitutes a joke.

Planesmistakenforstars · 02/04/2026 16:32

Neither of them are jokes really, just gross statements. Yours was really grim. His was totally over the line. And any man who comes out with “not a child. She’s legal” would probably think it was okay to have sex with a 15, 14 etc year old if that was the age of consent. Yes I'd dump.

HyacinthsAndPeonies · 02/04/2026 16:33

Yes, I'd end the relationship because of this because what he said was vile.

However, what you said was unfunny too. Maybe 'undarken' your sense of humour a bit and you'll attract better people.

Upsetbetty · 02/04/2026 16:33

You both sound utterly grim.

Strange jokes from both of you.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 02/04/2026 16:34

You're both idiots. You sound suited.

ComeOnPhilEarlySpringPlease · 02/04/2026 16:40

Well the punchline is missing, namely that would make you his mother-in-law
If he said it with that punchline in mind, it's less problematic.
If not, I'm getting the word....

nonce

That would have been my response if it was banter <hates the word banter>
If I thought it was remotely many a true word spoken in jest, I'd be gone like Donkey Kong because ick.

Imbusytodaysorry · 02/04/2026 16:43

@dlb12 sounds like a guy that would go there! His thought process is ,,, (she is legal)
you may have started this but this would make me sick to my stomach and he would have been gone there and then .

Burm · 02/04/2026 16:43

Ugh, both just revolting “jokes” really! 😐

CrocusesFlowering · 02/04/2026 16:47

You’re as bad as each other.

MajorProcrastination · 02/04/2026 16:49

Both jokes are gross.

Thehorticulturalhussie · 02/04/2026 16:50

You both sound unpleasant quite frankly so please try to make this relationship work. Better for everyone.
