Will antisemitism ever be looked at and dealt with in the same way as Islamophobia is?

AIBU for thinking it won’t? Because it doesn’t seem to be the case in this country or my home country (Germany).

(I just googled because it didn’t seem right to have antisemitism in lower capitals, but apparently that is correct, as I thought)

Much love to the Jewish community, wherever they are.

Yes because what they said makes complete sense 🙄

Your interpretation of what they said is bedlam, that's true.

Clearly medical context matters, but in this situation, neckties, hijabs, turbans and jewelry such as kalava bracelets were allowed, so it can't have been about being a source of infection. I hate to think how much of a source of infectin a turban would be - I don't expect they bring a newly-sterilised one in for use everyday, do you?

You’ve got a point, and then you sort of mess it up. You do know you’re doing it though, don’t you?

Why don't you try explaining it then?

I'm confident my opinions are fairly consistent - I certainly try to ensure they are.

For instance it would be inconsistent to object to a hijab on hygiene grounds but to think that a turban was perfectly ok, but not inconsistent if one's objection to the hijab is that it marks women's lesser status in Islam, rather than hygiene. But if it's ok for Orthodox Jewish men to refuse to shake a woman's hand in case she's unclean, then objecting to the hijab because of inequality for women would be hypocritical.

And so on.

I'm technically not Jewish. But as an ally I do identify more with Jews than antisemites and other racists. I know enough about the culture to be able to fit in a liberal Jewish congregation. Maybe that explains it, even if I assume that this concept is tricky for a lay person.

Not disingenuous, just not a racists.

What is your stand on racist Jewish people?

Aislyn · 04/04/2026 16:04

Sadly, I think Anti-Semitism is seen as an 'acceptable' form of racism currently, and is not treated with the seriousness it deserves.

I have seen a lot of it on this forum, as well as in real life, and when I have raised it there are people who have tried to deny and silence, rather than learn.

I don't know what the solution is. I believe in education, but I think a lot of people have bigotry so deeply entrenched in themselves that they are not willing to learn.

No I do not believe it will be

many calling out Islamophobia particularly on the so called progressive left where anti semitism is rife

and please don’t both reply with being anti Israeli government is not being anti semitic you are seen for what you are when you justify the abuse towards Jewish people

both are wrong neither is complicated by a dislike of a governments actions

Boomer55 · 04/04/2026 16:25

Both are wrong. Neither has more problems than the other. 🤷‍♀️

Are you actually saying that if you don’t like the current Israeli government then you are anti semetic ? !!

That's an intentional misreading of what was written.

What actually happens all the time is antisemitic trope dreased up in 'I'm only anti zionist' and then 'I bet ill be accused of antisemitism, they always do that'

‘Intentional misreading’ … bollox is it. I still can’t understand what point is being made.

And for the sake of balance, there have been similar problems with some Haredi orthodox yeshivas, where boys are being taught religious subjects instead of the national curriculum, and where abuse is not uncommon. Though as they aren't interested in educating girls, the girls at least go to normal schools I think. Unlike unregistered Islamic schools in the UK where boys and girls are religiously "educated" with the girls all at the back of the room and not allowed to speak.
https://humanists.uk/campaigns/policy-unit/illegal-religious-schools/

But my objections are to the lack of proper education, not to any particular religion.

Obviously no children should be subjected to such behaviour, whatever the religion.

To the ‘for balance, other groups do this’, I think that’s unhelpful to the conversation. If the Haredi orthodox yeshivas (this example feels rather obscure, I have never come across one of these) are expanding their operations, increasing in numbers and power in the UK and were working with the government to criminalise all criticism of their practises then if agree that it was comparable but as far as I can find out, it it’s not.

Do you have any information on the scale of this and how closely they are working with the government?

It's so weird that on the Diane Abbott thread you clearly stated in a number of posts that you are Jewish and that you have Jewish heritage that would show up in a DNA test. You have now said on this thread that you aren't Jewish so that's a really strange claim to make.

That's really odd! I wonder what would motivate someone to do that. There have been some pretty batshit comments made on the site in the past few days to be fair! Maybe it was the full moon?!

Yep. The response is odd too, as though you have to pretend to be Jewish to not be antisemitic. So very strange.

But those garments mentioned will obviously be a source of infection. Shouldn't be allowed.

I object to the sentiment that the Orthodox don't believe in educating their girls, it isn't true. There are many Ofsted regulated girls' and boys' schools in Stamford Hill and other Ultra Orthodox communities. As they are Ofsted regulated they have to follow the national curriculum, and are properly inspected and regulated. They have religious studies alongside the national curriculum, in the same way that other religious schools do.

You’re being facetious. It’s pretty obvious what I meant, unless you don’t read literature / the news.

Suggest you read that poster’s explanation on why they pretend to be Jewish on MN.

Kanye West is headlining the Wireless Festival in London. This is after publicly saying he likes Hitler, suggesting a swastika design for his album cover, and releasing a single called "Heil Hitler" in which he samples a speech from the man himself.

If he had targeted Muslims in a similar way, would he be invited to headline a festival?

I can't see what they have said previously and not sure if I can search it so was interested to know what you meant. If you don't want to explain, then nevermind.

That man should not be anywhere near any music festival, end of. He is unhinged.

Honestly, I am shocked that he can continue performing after what has happened. His words matter, as he has a massive following, and he shouldn't be given a platform in any music festival. The fact that people are happy to pay to watch him, despite his abhorrent and openly racist views, is quite telling about the world we currently live in.

fouroclockrock · 04/04/2026 22:55

So, to clarify, is it just Muslims you aren’t keen on then?
