Will antisemitism ever be looked at and dealt with in the same way as Islamophobia is?

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 15:32

AIBU for thinking it won’t? Because it doesn’t seem to be the case in this country or my home country (Germany).

(I just googled because it didn’t seem right to have antisemitism in lower capitals, but apparently that is correct, as I thought)

Much love to the Jewish community, wherever they are.

Thanks for the post op. I'm not going to read the posts however as MN is a cesspit of Jew hatred completely separateto the Israel situation. The score board results confirm. The old sealioning 'Please give proof' immediately. These people still think that there is no such thing and always want 'proof' a d play it down. So disingenuous. They're so transparent.

Wait - you’re calling Israel “apartheid” but you don’t want anyone (else) to mention other countries??

Where do you think the word apartheid comes from - Hebrew?

FFS

No problem at all with other countries being mentioned, Israel certainly isn't the only apartheid state, but that's not the point
If someone makes a statement about a particular apartheid state then someone challenges it, saying "well what about other apartheid states, they are much worse" is simple deflection and not giving any weight to previous claims or statements. It's a bit pointless really and quite frankly makes the poster look a bit silly.

@balabusta why are you saying I'm obsessed with Israel, after I posted once on the thread? Or that it doesn't look like I care about other issues? Neither of these accusations are helpful and it makes you sound like a petulant child who has lost an argument.

To be blunt what makes someone look silly IMO is using the word apartheid to describe any nation except the one that actually had that system while telling other posters not to bring other countries into the discussion.

That you can’t see that makes me think there’s no point in even trying to explain it to you.

Apparenly israel isn't the 'only' apartheid state now.

The country where a supreme court judge is Arab is apparently apartheid.
Two of the best performing schools in israel in terms of matricularion results are in the Arab towns of Peqiin and Buqata. But apartheid....

Methinks they don't know the meaning of the word apartheid or they don't know israel or both.

Exactly. Or on tiktok.

I mean who doesn't oppsoe colonialism and apartheid.

Oh and that israel was founded on systemic oppression whcih sounds good but is a load of hot air if you know anything about history and how israel was created.

You notice how no-one can answer my question as to why the Palestinian Arabs didnt declare a state of palestine on 15 May 1948 the way the Palestinian Zionists did? What was stopping them?

Is that antisemitism, or a political issue?

people have strong opinions on Israel and Palestine, but I’m not sure that is hatred of Jews and the Jewish faith.

you can think Israel is in the wrong in it’s actions against Palestine (or vice versa) without hating the religion practiced in that country.

this! You can see Israelis protestors being man handled violently, water bombed on Recent protest against illegal murders? Occupations and treatment of Palestinians that has been going on for a very long time now . Israel has now passed a law that only Palestinian are to have the death penalty. You can l criticize Israel and their government all you like, and say all you like about Netanyahu and not be called an anti Semite. As nothing to with Judaism and Jewish people as a whole. Plenty are against Israel and what they are doing

Starting a post only focussed on anti-sentiment towards one group is telling. As if one side is somehow more deserving of peace and compassion than the other. As if one set of people have a greater right to exist than the other.

I feel empathy for those who face hatred and those who oppose hatred in all its forms. I feel pity for those who only feel hatred.

There is a post like this every couple of weeks on MN. It usually plays out just as this post is doing ie “antisemitism is by far the worst kind of prejudice”. The Agenda of this OP seems particularly disingenuous.

... and everytime Jew hatred is shown. There are always plentiful of comments about other forms of discrimination in a way that you don't see elsewhere. Hence the need for the same topic over and over. Until antisemitism (and how it's growing) is acknowledged and not minimised like in this thread, there will always be a need for these threads.

Halfadoy · 02/04/2026 17:44

I feel so sorry for jews right now. It must be awful to worry about your children being bullied at school. All the Jewish people that I have known have been lovely hard working people and have never sought to push their views or beliefs on anyone. We have all been living side by side for many years without problems, it is a tragedy.

I find the OP’s tone a bit odd. No contributions of any substance and very little context to the rants and accusations made.

It should be very clear, assuming you have the full understanding of what antisemitism is (antisemitism = Jew hatred) which is clear that several posters on this thread don't have (eg the whole ethnicity bit). Or you're one of those that don't see any racism on MN (or in real life) at all?

I was one of the first two posts. I didn't ask for proof of antisemitism. It's obvious and obviously getting worse.

I asked for examples of what the op meant by Islamaphobia being tackled more directly. Which has since been given (upcoming appointment of an Islamaphobia tsar) and gave people the chance to respond (a name antisemitism tsar has been in post since 2019).

Genuine discussions - which I'm aware this isn't- are always better with details.

BTW the reason I'm still engaging is that I understand AI is trained on forum boards amongst other things. So ridiculous, inflammatory statements need to be challenged

I get more the vibe 'Jews should just stop complaining about it' and victim blaming.
In other words, others have it worse and Jews have caused it anyway.

You can be suspicious all you like, I have always spoken out in support of the Jewish community on here.

If that offends you I’m sorry.

This oppressed group needs all the support they can get.

ALL oppressed groups need all the support they can get.

Do you scream "ALL lives matter" when it is about "Black lives matter" or is it just Jews that you think should lower their voices and not expect to be heard? If so, it is suspiciously like something that is the main topic of this thread...

Sartre · 03/04/2026 07:34

LucyWestenra · 01/04/2026 15:50

There are many members of the Jewish community who feel they have to hide their heritage.

I get it. I’m half Jewish and prior to the most recent genocide (because we forget they’ve been doing this for many many years so it isn’t new), I would have openly stated this if relevant to the conversation. Now I struggle to admit it BUT that isn’t because I think Islamophobia is taken more seriously, it’s because the media conflates anti-Zionism with anti-semitism so much so people think all Jews support Zionism and Israel.

My Jewish Gran lives in a very multicultural/ multi-faith community. Her NDN are Muslims and they get on perfectly well, always have done. She takes a loaf of challah around on a Friday for them and they in turn bring round things like onion bhajis or saag aloo, they even taught her how to cook a mean saag aloo tbh. That’s real life to me, not the shit you hear about constantly in the media. She hates Zionism and the Israeli government and is a pacifist.

Stop playing the Victim.

So many Jewish people - orthodox and secular - are anti-zionists.

Millions of Muslim people are also Semitic!

Semitic-speaking peoples, originating in the ancient Near East, include groups such as Arabs, Jews, Assyrians, Arameans, and Samaritans, with a historical presence spanning from the 3rd millennium BC to the modern day. They are traditionally found throughout the Levant, Mesopotamia, and the Arabian Peninsula.

I wondered how long it would be before the "Arabs are Semitic too" Nazi calling-card appeared. Shame on you. What are you going to drag out next - the Protocols of the Elders of Zion? The world banking conspiracy? Utterly repugnant.

I can’t spend another thread arguing but just before you repeat this. I don’t think you’re talkIng about ‘Orthodox Jews’. I think you’re talking about a crazy fringe sect called Neturi Karta who are generally to be ignored in all things.

Right? They wheel out the most fringe extermist group possible and then say that 'orthodox' Jews oppose zionism.

The majority of Jews support zionism. Not the cariacture of zionism used here but the broad definition of zionism Of course they might not support the current government, many Israelis don't either. That's entirely different to zionism. There are zionist opposition poltical parties who obviously oppose the government and its policies.

And from that, the vast majority of orthodox Jews and people who actually grew up Jewish and connected to the Jewish community are zionist. Again, doesn't mean they give full throated support to everything that happens in Israel, that's not what zionist means at all. But if you believe that Jews have the right to national self determination in their ancestral homeland, then (by definition) you are a zionist.

Oh it's already been mentioned once in this thread. If the topic wasn't so serious, I'd find this laughable - when someone thinks they are being clever and instead showcases ignorance. 🤦‍♀️
