How long before fuel rationing?

A lot of talk of possible fuel rationing here if this conflict continues.
Will Airlines be able to cope? It does seem inevitable now.

I think this long Bank holiday weekend will cause some disruption with the usual crazy traffic .

I think we'll have less day trippers in our tourist area. Diesel was £1.90 yesterday here.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/03/2026 18:14

The DOW's spiked a thousand points, so something has happened that hasn't yet hit the news.

lightoutisntit · 31/03/2026 18:17

Right now we've probably only got demand outstripping supply temporarily - people filling up early, but then not using it quickly, so there might be a corresponding dip in demand over the next few days when lots of people just don't need fuel again for a bit, perhaps?

It'll be different if we start getting less fuel coming in to the country full stop, maybe due to some going to other countries. If that happens, then no amount of obedient sticking to pre-war buying patterns will be enough, so rationing and directing fuel to essential services probably will have to happen.

Given that for most people the size of the tank in their car provides a natural limit on what they can store, so that creates a ceiling on what the population can buy, perhaps we might not need it before then?

They will just bus them in to live in statics while
working.

1 bus 30 staff.

Maybe companies should do the same.

I actually saw a Bernard mathews staff bus a while back so they must all meet in a spot and then driven to the factory.

This was so common in the late 90s and early 2000s when I worked in factories. You'd pay a small amount out of your wages and be bussed in.

We are just back off a U.K. seaside trip that despite the online booking system showing as nearly fully booked was pretty dead on site.

In our little section of 20 statics sea view as if you fell off the deck you’d be in the sea type stuff there was 3 of us. The restaurants we visited again pretty dead. Arcade dead and it was a fab arcade prize wise for the children. Plenty of space in the pools as well. Definitely not our normal experience.

Canonlythinkofthisone · 31/03/2026 18:21

I am not a panic buyer, however, we seem to live in a blackspot for fuel deliveries. All the local stations have been out for days and the nearest is almost £2 per litre for diesel. We are due to travel 8 hours to the south west in a few days and to be honest we have considered cancelling due to the unreliability of being able to fill up when we need, plus the cost. Its ok telling people not to fill up jerry cans and run on a tenner of fuel if you live centrally and can do so. The cost is one thing, its the fact the stations are running out so frequently that is a worry.

Maybe similar to this. Trump has made a few people very rich.

Look around. 95% of people do have that attitude!

Doesn't mean it is the right attitude to have though. This me first attitude that has arisen since COVID is completely devicive and the media are fuelling it. Everyone should be asking themselves what is the purpose of what is happening because it's obvious that this isn't about Iran having nuclear weapons but the USA trying to get a hold of and control all oil in the world. Much like Russia thought the Ukraine would be a war won in 48 hours, Iran are not for lying down and I don't blame them. Trump has ousted Venezuela head of state and holding them hostage, targeted Greenland then was held there and is now after Iran's oil. Now lambasting the UK for failing to join in a war - what do we have? Oil. There will be something engineered around that no doubt. The questions around fuel and cost of living should have people wondering what is going on and questioning those in power - not turning on one another. But then a divided nation means there's no one to challenge the status quo. Better for those at the top of the tree if the minions are fighting amongst themselves. I am extremely cynical of humans right now.

Pedallleur · 31/03/2026 18:26

oil is priced globally not regionally Price and supply is set by OPEC.

I think that has been debunked as fake news. The woman is in Texas and it was a few years ago. The trash media really doesn't help things.

The 2019 video from Texas I managed to find was not the same as this one. The bags were white and the car grey.

The bags in the new video definitely look like Sainsburys bags. I can't find any old copies of this video. The person talking in it is definitely British.

Our closest supermarkets have ran out of diesel. There is some at the texaco garage for 190 a litre.

that's about the standard price for diesel atm

Pedallleur · 31/03/2026 18:33

let's not forget that there is vat on fuel so IF the Govt wanted they COULD reduce/remove that charge temporarily given that the increased prices have brought increased revenues

The average price as of yesterday was 182p.

Quite a few countries have cut fuel duty

If it’s real how do they not leak everywhere.

Tableforjoan · 31/03/2026 18:38

Reeves cut fuel duty 😂😂 she will be telling us how she needs to up it because we have a huge black hole soon.

Prices are set by supply and demand. If they cut the VAT the demand will increase and the price will just go back up to where it was. The only winners would be the oil giants.

The only options are to increase supply and/or reduce demand. Given that they don't have control over supply, they will need to reduce demand. A 60mph speed limit would be a good idea to make engines run more efficiently.

In the 2019 Texas video it was pissing everywhere.

Sainsburys bags are a bit more robust but I dread to think how much will have spilled in her boot.

Those saying we don't get much of our petrol from Iran; where do we get our main supply?

Well I bet the petrol made a mess of her boot , either way!

You're the reason other morons panic buy.

Weird flex to admit to mega selfish behaviour. Its not a good look tbh

I personally think EVERYONE should have a spare can, just in case, which isn't selfish behaviour. Of course at a time like this when running out seems more likely, everyone REMEMBERS that they should have a spare can, and all try to get it at the same time. That's the problem, not the fact that people want to actually have the extra.

Makes sense to fill up a few jerry cans if you have them and keep the car brimmed.

Driving on the M25 on Sunday, signs were saying no HGV fuel on the M3. Local Shell garage only has 2 pumps working rather than 10.

Edited

It doesn’t make sense at all. Did people like you learn nothing during Covid? Stockpiling fuel is particularly dangerous and is what causes problems.

You won’t be thinking it is a good idea when your shed blows up and the tire service can’t attend because you had their fuel in your shed.

The DOW's spiked a thousand points, so something has happened that hasn't yet hit the news.

That's just all the shorters buying up the stock after last weeks sell off the usual Monday spike after Friday's sell off didn't happen yesterday - probably because the sell offs were a bit later in the week last week and they were waiting to see if there was any further drop.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 31/03/2026 19:17

It does make you think that the news should only be made available to people with a minimum IQ level ie above 2. Honestly, people should be ashamed of themselves filling their tanks daily.
