How long before fuel rationing?

A lot of talk of possible fuel rationing here if this conflict continues.
Will Airlines be able to cope? It does seem inevitable now.

Got a family Member who for some reason is stock piling euros 🤷🏻‍♀️

BillyBites · 31/03/2026 19:19

The only reason there was a queue by our local petrol station this afternoon is because some idiot sat waiting to turn right across traffic to get onto the full forecourt and no one could get past.
I went down just now to fill up (from empty) as I'm going on a long trip tomorrow morning and I sailed in with no issue.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 31/03/2026 19:20

I tend to top up after every trip unless local - have done so for a couple of years.

But I am a smug electric car owner - in fact my costs go down tomorrow.

damelza · 31/03/2026 19:22

Trump should have had his war on Iran during Covid. Not much need for travelling then. Idiot.

Free Covid test with every refuel. Smart thinking 🧐 or fuel depending on a clear covid test.

The possibilities.

I've got an annual event in a couple of weeks. I'm driving there. I think it was 2022 or 2023 when there were fuel shortages. There were concerns whether people would be able to get there. We all did.
We went to down the M6 motorway on January and there were 'services out of fuel ' signs.

Linoleum81 · 31/03/2026 19:49

dottiehens · 31/03/2026 17:36

Because of the idiots panic buying. Which surely will push prices up due to high demand.

do You have proof of panic buying? Local Tesco out of fuel. Slightly longer queues a couple of days ago, but that because one pump out of action. No massive queues.

Makes sense to fill up a few jerry cans if you have them and keep the car brimmed.

Driving on the M25 on Sunday, signs were saying no HGV fuel on the M3. Local Shell garage only has 2 pumps working rather than 10.

Edited

No not a good idea. Full tanks cost you more to run due to the weight of fuel. Also selfish and unnecessary.

There wasn’t actually a shortage though. It was due to lorries being stuck somewhere and everyone panicked leading to shortages. If everyone just acted as normal these shortages wouldn’t happen.

The law sets a limit of about 5 gallons that you can keep on domestic premises. It is a huge risk.

Papyrophile · 31/03/2026 20:04

The friend of a friend, bought 10,000 litres of diesel a few days ago. He is an agricultural contractor who brings in harvest crops for farmers. So some people are taking the shortfall very seriously.

Lemonthyme · 31/03/2026 20:12

What would be far more sensible is for companies (and workers) to do as they did in covid and work from home as much as possible. With it starting to get warmer but not hot, home energy use is likely to be low in the day as well. Other countries have already implemented this and it would make sense to do the same.

I already mostly work from home and get my fuel reimbursed when I do travel but I'd be fully expecting in my last job a lot of people to be going to hybrid now if they can.

Absolutely not, the stupidest of ideas. Cans are fire risk and constantly “brimming” your car actually causes shortages

JulietteHasAGun · 31/03/2026 20:19

I was thinking today of Mad Max. IIRC the start of that film was a war in Iran, causing fuel shortages and then the collapse of society. Just saying…..😆

but I can’t get diesel, haven’t been able to for a week so now can’t drive anywhere. Seeing as I’m rural that’s a bit shit.

SovietSpy · 31/03/2026 20:19

The video with the woman and Sainsbury’s bags is AI. Crazy it’s being reported as news when no one can prove when it happened or get an eye witness quote from the guy filming. Plus convenient you don’t see her pumping into the bag and video ends before seeing a reg number

How long before fuel rationing?

"How long before fuel rationing?"

I believe that I'm correct in saying that the last time there was fuel rationing in the UK was back in 1973/74. I remember that my dad had a special card to allow him to get petrol as he had a company car that he used for his work.

In October 1973, Arab oil producers placed an embargo on countries led by the USA over their support for Israel during the Yom Kippur war (this was a surprise attack by Egypt and Syria during the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur). That policy came alongside a co-ordinated cut to oil production.

This meant that oil prices quadrupled very quickly indeed. Not just going up a bit, but think about petrol prices going up to £4 per litre nowadays.

Currently, the UK gets most of its fuel from from the USA followed by Norway. The routes from these countries to the UK are not affected by the current war, however the price has increased due to the global nature of oil pricing.

Just to add an additional point, oil prices fell back a bit after the end of the Yom Kippur war but they then further tripled again in 1979, after the Islamists gained control of Iran in the Iranian Revolution. This time there was no rationing in the UK but there were very long queues at petrol stations and some petrol stations did run out of petrol.

The IMF have warned today that the UK is a country facing one of the largest energy shocks.

The IMF is always wrong when it comes to the UK. I’d honestly ignore them.

SouthernNights59 · 31/03/2026 20:30

I'm not in the UK but here we are kept updated about how much fuel there is available, what the plans are if it needs to be restricted etc.

DrySherry · 31/03/2026 20:44

AIBU when I feel slightly smug driving past our local fuel stations in my Tesla ? I just had an email from Octopus energy saying they are reducing the cost of my night charging to 6.5p per kw hour. My car is doing 4.5 miles per kw hour - so that works out I'm paying about 1.5p per mile. At current prices that equates to an equivalent of nearly 1000 mpg ! God bless you Elon 😉

Sorry, I'll get my coat...

Hall84 · 31/03/2026 20:47

Working my way through, I fill up once a month (ish!), more often lately due to planned trips. I queued for petrol today, in the middle of the day as popped out on my lunch break to collect a parcel. I haven't been under a rock but the queue did take me by surprise as I haven't seen any local signs indicating garages have run out (Big Tesco, north west)

MyJustCat · 31/03/2026 20:49

Dammit who just posted that the UK gets most of our crude from the US - if Trump reads that there will be tariffs before the day is out.

Actually I'm on diesel and get work milage reimbursed but I am looking to get a newer car and its dawning on me just how much cheaper electric cars are to run.
