Big knickers or not to be big knickers, that is the question????

So I am now in my early sixties and in recent years have been wearing VPL Brazilian briefs which in fairness have been reasonably comfy. However after a recent spate of ill health and hospital visits, I have found myself reaching for BIG KNICKERS? Is this the end for me, is it a step too far or am I being unreasonable?

Don't get me wrong, they aren't the type of knickers that can combine as chest warmers but they aren't exactly sexy, and my husband prefers me with them off anyway 😁🤣.

So what do you think:

YANBU: is it OK to wear those big bottom warmers
YABU: Girl, you are too young to abandon the Brazilians?

God I find Brazilian knickers awful and I’m not yet 40, big knickers and shorts all the way for me.

Favouritefruits · 30/03/2026 15:16

I’ve been wearing big knickers since my 30s who wants to be uncomfortable?

Jointhecircus · 30/03/2026 15:17

I started wearing big knickers full time after the birth of my second child. I was 32 😂 I haven’t gone back.

RosesAndHellebores · 30/03/2026 15:20

I've been wearing big knickers since my mid 40s. Why be uncomfy?

dd snaffled a new pair of mine a few years ago and was a convert aged 24

They look better under clothes - never a line twixt waist and hip.

DH has never commented.

I’ve been in big knickers since early 40s. I’m comfortable that is all that matters

😂 I'm about to give birth to my 2nd soon, and my husband laughed because I bought new big knickers for post partum. When i asked what was funny he proceeded to tell me "Sure you still wear your big knickers everyday and your now 2yrs post partum... they aren't new post partum knickers, they are just new knickers"

KeeleyJ · 30/03/2026 15:29

16 year old me would be horrified but its big knickers for me (40's). DH doesn't look at my knickers 😉.

Lomonald · 30/03/2026 15:29

I bought a pack of Brazilian pants by mistake to go on holiday i wore them, they are so uncomfortable and for me unflattering, big pants are at least comfy

Gowlett · 30/03/2026 15:29

I’ve been in the big knicks since having DS at 44. Even when I lost the baby weight. DH had a laugh at them, but I just keep the fancy ones for the bedroom. I can’t go back now!

LifesabagofRevels · 30/03/2026 15:32

Life’s too short for knickers bunching up my arse crack. Big knicks all the way.

Unpaidworkmakestheeconomytick · 30/03/2026 15:34

Buy your husband some Brazilian pants.

Clothes should be comfortable for all of your life.

Flatinbed · 30/03/2026 15:35

Yep...big knickers here too!

Muffsies · 30/03/2026 15:38

I was about to respond to say, noooooooooo don't do it! But then i decided to google 'full briefs for women', and i was plesantly surprised. There are some sexy ones and some funky ones, they don't have to be frumpy. Just don't get 'skin tone' ones - they're never skin tone and they are repellant to men, apparently (not that that is the only consideration here).

I say, be comfortable how ever you like, but shop around to find the ones that are 'you', so that you don't feel you're compromising on your style.

Muffsies · 30/03/2026 15:46

Btw, sorry to hear you have not been well. That can knock confidence/self image, don't be ready to write yourself off! From what i've seen (and read above) big knicks are not a harbinger of the slippery slope into old age/frumpiness at all, just a comfy option.

God, I remember when I'd just had an emergency C-section and needed huge knickers so that they breezed over the incision site.

I had to ask my younger sister to buy some and bring them to me in hospital. Neither of us knew where to buy these giant things. In the end she decided that BHS (as it existed then) was probably the best bet.

Sure enough, she came in with a pack of the biggest knickers I had ever seen. The packet said "briefs," but brief they were not. I just kept unfolding and unfolding them until they lay draped across most of the bed. I've had tops with less fabric in them than that. But they were a real godsend as my scar healed comfortably under their billowing embrace for the next few weeks.

Sorry, this post just triggered me into a little wander down my Memory Lane of Pants...

Are you the poster who likes to prance around wearing a t shirt and knickers and bending over, like a Benny Hill extra? Apologies if not. Comfy pants all the way!!

Bellsandwhimples · 30/03/2026 15:48

I wear full Victorian bloomers and have done since I was 24.

I also wondered this 😂😂

marriednotdead · 30/03/2026 15:52

Almost 60. Big pants only since my hysterectomy, everything else rolls into my scar.
Not ugly ones though, I usually get matching sets and a high waist style is almost always available. On the odd occasion it isn't, I get ones in the same colour as the bra.

damelza · 30/03/2026 15:53

What about MEEEEE? I'm flipping 68 and am wearing period pants, yes those newfangled things that I wish I'd had when I had periods. I'm recovering after gynae surgery, and honest to god, every single pack of panty liners I've bought so far just DO NOT stick, and I ended up with a rope between my legs. Hence the ppants which are god's gift.

Prior to this, it was big parachutes all the way. Well those that went way up above the belly button anyway, you know the ones. Keeps the pot belly in its rightful place!

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 30/03/2026 15:58

I haven’t worn little knickers since my early 20s. DH counts himself lucky to see me in my multi pack M&S cotton pants, or even luckier to see me without them. I am a bit obsessive about avoiding uncomfortable textures though. I’ve got some silk French knickers for social occasions (bought by DH so obviously so objection to big pants).

Cricketashes · 30/03/2026 16:01

Thongs all the way here. Super comfortable and don't even know I'm wearing them. I've worn them since I was a teenager and am now mid 40s.

mondaytosunday · 30/03/2026 16:03

Feck that I’ve always worn full briefs. The only things comfortable after my sections and only time I ever wore anything other was possibly teens/early 20s. I’ve just bought some bamboo ones to give a try for their ‘moisture whicking’ properties. I’m 64 but dress reasonably fashionably. No one is seeing my underclothes so comfort is paramount.

Janey90 · 30/03/2026 16:03

I find M&S Brazilian knickers quite comfy, as long as I size up? I'm in my 50s. But I do find that most styles look better in black?

What sort of social occasions?
