To think perhaps WFH might need encouraged again for a while

The news refers to petrol shortages. Not sure if it’s just headlines or clickbait. But if there are going to be shortages, surely the government should be starting to encourage WFH and using public transport where possible

What's frustrating is that the Gov are considering some of the IEA recommendations, like reducing speed limits, but not WFH even though this would be the greatest positive impact on the citizen in reduced cost, and would equal the reduction achieved by lowering speed limits.

Well it's not up to the government to tell companies what to do and it's bad for the economy.

It’s April this week. Heating is off until October.

Gosh it's only 7 degrees here, that would get chilly fast!

ObelixtheGaul · 30/03/2026 16:05

Public transport still needs fuel. The cost of my weekly bus ticket has just gone up by £7.

To be fair I’m in a very well insulated new build. I’ve never seen the thermostat dip below 18.

In my old house I would have needed heating in June.

We are doing slightly better weather wise - in double digits. What I really mean is that at least we are getting into the better part of year to be working from home x

I’m Scottish. might need encouraged is very commonly used in Scotland: appreciate that some of you may live outwith Scotland

Oh, and a Scottish 'outwith' too! Love an outwith. (Also Scottish)

I am sure you are quite capable of working out the cost per mile per passenger per litre for private vehicles and a bus carrying 60 people ?

I don’t understand how our English counterpart cope without an “outwith”

I don't think WFH is the answer, I think more people need to car share! I drive to work in the morning, admittedly alone, and every single car has one person in it. If we got together and filled every car to capacity how much would this save in fuel and cost!?!

Could you explain to me how its bad for the economy? Covid lockdowns obviously were, because no one was allowed to go anywhere. This is different and is actually to preserve the economy, including manufacturing and agriculture, by ensuring good oil levels. Do you know what will happen to the economy if we run out?

If the UK was going to car share, it would have by now. Given that I'm thinking 1950-2000 will probably be the high water mark for people owning their own transport, I can understand the bond between Britons and their cars.

Also, car sharing is a perennial risk to women.

Why is it not a good option though, if the job is perfectly doable from home? Car sharing is pretty tricky, especially if you are juggling nursery and school drop off and pick up times etc. Or having to be in different locations on different days.

(Edited to add last sentence in as I forgot to put it in before I posted.)

And what happens to shops and small businesses without footfall?

luckylavender · 30/03/2026 17:17

I think our local village and town would have more footfall if people were travelling to the cities to work. It just shifts the demand in a way.

Yes, thank you, I am simply pointing out that fuel concerns are also impacting public transport, driving the cost up. I am sure you are quite capable of understanding that all forms of transport which require fuel will be affected, and that bus services are also at risk of reduction as a result, as well as price increases.

If we are talking about reducing - not eliminating - fuel usage, then maximising peope carried per litre would be a pretty good start.

And getting people with ICE cars to keep their revs between 3 and 4 thousand would be nice. Never going to happen, of course.

Who remembers the 3 day week ? And coming home as a kid (like me) and lighting the candles during a power cut ?

I never understand why some posters feel the need to correct how others post on here. No doubt someone will be along to nitpick at this post as well, it comes across as being mean imo. For many posters English isn’t their first language and a few posters on here appear to forget that.

Those that correct come across as complete cocks!

@Asuitablecatwtf is ovulation transport?

🤣 I got carried away reading the thread but did think wtf is that, too!

Zanatdy · 30/03/2026 18:00

So few of our staff drive in, but lessons learned from Covid, I wouldn’t want to encourage large time spent at home as been a blooming nightmare getting staff back.

As a dyslexic it's pisses me off. We would all want people to make adjustments for our dyslexic kids while simultaneously thinking everyone else who gets it wrong are automatic fuckwits. This is what our ND kids future looks like.

Be kind. But only to those with impeccable grammar 🤣

The tories sold it all off.

Public Transport is shit in our area.

Public Transport is shit in our area.

If it really mattered, you could swamp the country with buses.

Lll898 · 30/03/2026 18:13

There isn't one size fits all, but which option works who knows.

Work from home - gov will not like we won't be spending on lunch breaks etc

Car sharing so many people in my office this would not work drop kids and nursey school clubs etc

I personally don't think there is a shortage I do however think many are buying lots more than they did keeping cars topped up to beat future price increases which is putting pressure on supply.

Public transport depends heavily where you live I come from London so would use bus and tube over driving high majority of the time, but now in a south staffordshire village bus is once per hour between 09:30 & 2:30

They must have an inferior complex to only post when it’s to correct someone’s grammar! Makes them look like a complete twat! In my humble honest opinion! 😏
