To think perhaps WFH might need encouraged again for a while

The news refers to petrol shortages. Not sure if it’s just headlines or clickbait. But if there are going to be shortages, surely the government should be starting to encourage WFH and using public transport where possible

😂 yeah quick, get the oil! Not like it would take minimum 5-10 years to get close to it... And it's not the right decision anyway. Maybe this is the wake up call we need to use less.

Luckily I already walk (or in terrible weather get the bus) to work. DCs walk or cycle. DH WFH twice a week too and can also get public transport. We aren't heavily impacted day to day, but visiting family who are 200 and 90 miles away respectively will become very expensive.

In the meantime we just buy really expensive oil from other countries. Makes no sense.

ClassicalQueen · 30/03/2026 13:01

If I didn’t have children to get to school I would consider walking, but it’s not safe to walk my children down the rural country roads. Public transport is an option for people in towns and cities, but there isn’t one near me to get me to the children’s school and then to work.

I only fill up once a month as it is with my hybrid, the cost isn't going to put me off going less than I need to. Fortunately already wfh, but I wouldn't expect an employer to use a lack of petrol as an excuse to allow wfh.

It makes no sense because you don't have the knowledge or are not asking the questions. Is the oil suitable, can we refine it, is all oil created equal, how much is left, who does it belong to. How long would it take etc...?

But most people I've seen of late, especially on SM are 'we have oil - drill oil, What's the problem ?! with a loading swirl above their heads.

There are reasons for everything.

Why not? If you can't get fuel how are you supposed to get there? It seems a very sensible time to say they will allow wfh.

whirlyhead · 30/03/2026 13:48

My father used to take me to school on the back of a tandem (about 6 miles each way I think). That's always an option. My mother didn't drive so she had a 4 wheel cart that fastened onto her bicycle that she transported us around in as kids.

Needs must!!

For a very short journey maybe, not for 30 miles!

theres tons of oil look it up, it would take a while to get it into production but worth it in the end. Creating jobs as well. Other countries do it and have cheaper fuel so why shouldn’t we. Don’t presume about people knowledge, my ex of 25 years works in the oil industry.

How about using some of that oil in the north sea?

Because it would be a LOOOONG time before it could happen. Because it's not the way forward and because it wouldn't be any cheaper - if that's your argument.

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/03/2026 22:33

Swings and roundabouts. What you save on transport costs by WFH, surely you spend on heating your home more?

(Scot here. Smiled at the 'outwith'.)

Edited

It’s April this week. Heating is off until October.

Some of us 😂? You know this is a worldwide site, right?

The impression I get from threads on here is that most posters either already work from home or do jobs that can't be done from home so I'm not sure what scope there is for encouraging more

I think you missed the point of what the OP was saying...

If you have 'inside knowledge ' then why are you asking about it?

You know there's a 'ton of oil ' that's one question with an answer. What about the rest?

I'm old. And not stupid. And listen.

Way back when it was "North Sea Oil" (who remembers "High Speed Gas") it was well known that NSO was lighter than the crude oil needed to refine petrol from.

My understanding of geology - albeit limited - suggests that 60 years isn't really long enough for this to change.

If the UK was serious about being self sufficient in energy (clue it isn't) then it would have built a lot of nuclear power stations when it was the worlds expert.

Ah well, if you want to get there, you wouldn't start from here.

I WFH a couple of times a week. i still have to go out twice a day to look after and ride my horses though so it doesn't really help!

Will no one think of the esquestriannes 😂

I never cease to marvel at a mind that cannot imagine a different future.

The beauty of buses, is you can pretty much run them wherever and whenever you like within seconds planning. Unlike trains and trams.

OK, there may be a limit on vehicles and drivers. But as a scheme you could implement it in weeks.

If (as the Bacardi advert used to end). If you have the will. Which this thread shows is nowhere near happening.

Wolmando · 30/03/2026 15:13

Asda said about shortages in their garages but since diesel has been about 10p/l cheaper than other places then it is to be expected as everyone will go there.

ACIGC · 30/03/2026 15:14

If this is a direction to be taken, I'd love to see the comms around the u-turns some businesses are going to have to make about mandating time in the office.

I’m Scottish. might need encouraged is very commonly used in Scotland: appreciate that some of you may live outwith Scotland

It’s commonly used in England too, but it is still wrong in written English. English as in the language, not the country.

I am astounded that anyone believed them in the first place.

A old colleague was asking about incredibly limited (1 day a month) home working back in late 2019. Apparently it was "impossible" (the actual word used on the letter).

Cure 4 months later and not only was it not "impossible", but fucking "essential".

The older you get, the more you realise how many "can'ts" are really "won'ts" for the dim.

QforCucumber · 30/03/2026 15:24

@gamerchick I live near it, it was real and today they've closed due to no fuel. Our local Tesco also has run out of everything except the premium unleaded, there were queues yesterday around the Tesco main car park to get fuel!

Labelledelune · 30/03/2026 12:58

In the meantime we just buy really expensive oil from other countries. Makes no sense.

We produce 40% of our oil. We import the other 60% from Norway and the US with smaller amount from Nigeria and Libya.

British consumer don't get a special discount on UK-produced oil just by virtue of being British. BP, Shell etc aren't charities - they aren't going to give you a discount because you have a blue passport.

This time i will do it when the fucking celebs do

Well there's a bookable minibus but I don't think everyone from the small town and surrounding villages is going to fit!
