Dog wee (sorry!!)

Am I the only person who thinks that dogs weeing everywhere is really horrid. I know people pick up poo after their pets, but dog wee up lamp posts, gateposts, walls, hedges, fences, trees, even just on the grass seems really nasty too, especially if you have children who like to run and roll on the grass, or to poke about in tree roots etc. And there are so many dogs everywhere these days!

I think that in Spain dog owners have to carry a water bottle with you to wash or dilute the dog wee. Does anyone know if that is true?

We have a boy dog and he marks. I don’t let him do it on private property. He will mark every lamp post, or try. He will only ever poo on our yard.

What really bugs me is people taking their dogs on the playing field outside my children’s school. There’s another equally large piece of parkland adjacent, but they insist on taking them there, don’t always clean up the poo and let them wee everywhere, knowing the kids do sports on there everyday. It’s rank. And a lot of these are the parents. Mind boggling.

Birds could wear nappies too. Especially pigeons. They make a helluva mess.
What about cattle in the countryside or ducks in the park? Cats!!!!!!!

Then there's the grimness left by humans.... chewing gum, drunks wee, fag ends, vape rubbish, broken glass, drunks sick, runners spit and nose blowings, discarded kebab chillis, squashed insects, needles, the crafty shit the UberEats guy has in the bushes in the park.........argggghhhhhh.........we'd never go out.

Oh, you want to see what the seagulls do to your car where I live. The car across the road hasn’t moved in months because the old man died. It looks like a plasterer’s radio.

I have girl dogs. They don’t cock their legs over anything. And we don’t walk in children’s play areas.

You realise that boy dogs are required to produce those perfectly behaved girl dogs though?

Clefable · 29/03/2026 10:44

Once you make peace with the fact pretty much everything you touch has human fecal matter on it, you don’t really worry about stuff like this.

Which is why we need to consider if people could squirt it with a water bottle after.
I do see dog owners tug their dog away from my front garden as their dog is sniffing and getting ready to wee-mark, but that probably only happens when I am out the front gardening, or getting in the car etc. So it seems that dogs do get dragged off.

Dogs wee multiple times on a walk. To wash the wee away with a bottle of water, some people would need to take a lot of water on their dog walks.
Dog owners already take poo bags, lead, maybe a ball, ball thrower, treats, and now you want them to cart a huge bottle of water around too?
Along with their house keys, mobile phone, maybe a pair of gloves if it's cold?

Maybe dog owners need to invest in a small suitcase on wheels in order to take their dogs on a walk?

Allseeingallknowing · 29/03/2026 14:17

No matter what others have said about other animals weeing on property, it doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to foul there when it can, and should be avoided. How many trivialising this actually experience rivulets of pee constantly running down their own walls and gates that they try to keep clean and painted? No use talking to these ignorant and thoughtless people when you catch them allowing their dogs to do this, as you will only get stupid replies! The results say a lot!

Ilu · 29/03/2026 15:17

I had the same thought the other day while waiting for my kid to come out of nursery. A guy walking his dog stopped right in front of the nursery wall, his dog did a wee and kept walking as if nothing had happened. Dogs are creatures of habits, I'm sure that dog weed there everyday. I thought the dog owner was uncivic and not giving the kind of example I want for my kid as a responsible adult.

Yes, in Spain people walking dogs carry a bottle of water (usually an empty fairy liquid one you can squirt easily) and dilute the wee. I don't know if it's by law but it's common practice. It doesn't take much IMO.

Perhaps they do! I’m not saying anyone should HAVE to carry water around with them. But why not? Nobody else should be inconvenienced by your dog. They shouldn’t be the ones sorting out the aftermath of whatever bodily fluids Fido leaves behind. It’s about taking responsibility. If dog wee is causing a problem, then dog owners are the ones who need to solve it. It’s a fact that a dog cocking its leg on the same shrub or flowers every single day, could very well cause them to die. Of course a fox could do the same, but that doesn’t mean human beings shouldn’t be responsible for their pets’ behaviour.

Jefes · 29/03/2026 15:42

I squirt neat bleach on it.

PawMaw · 29/03/2026 09:11

I don't allow my dog to pee on fences, walls, benches, wheelie bins, cars, in gardens, near play parks or on pavements.

He does pee against trees and on grass as I don't have the skills to insert a catheter into him.

Also, he's trained not to pee in the garden as I don't want my grass to burn. Funnily enough, the areas I walk him the grass is fine! Must be stronger with all the fox, cat and badger pee!

Wow! So you won't let your own dog pee in your own garden! But are happy for it to pee in public spaces!

Why not? It has become acceptable to pick up dog poo, when in the past it was ok to let it lie in the street.

Also my experience. If the owners see me, they pull away the animals.

I've taken to putting a line of chilli powder across the bottom of my driveway in order to stop the parcels of excrement that I was getting. (Some dog owners removed them, but not all.)

That's what happens up the hill from me. There's a football pitch place there because it's in the middle of a housing estate and equidistant from two primary schools.

We actually get people driving here from other parts of town. (I have a parking bay outside the terrace where I live, so I see them coming and going when I'm out front.)

An added problem is that some owners inexplicably remove their dogs' leads while they're still adjacent to the road and my driveway. (I have a dropped kerb which is at the end of the parking bay - all legal, organised by a previous owner.)

I go very slowly indeed when I exit my driveway, because if someone lets their dog off the lead, and I'm nosing out it's sometimes not possible to see them until the last minute. I was once berated by an owner who complained that I'd 'nearly killed [his] dog'.

I pointed out that I'd seen the dog in time because I was going at a trickle and that it was his fault for not having the dog on a lead - it wasn't even walking to heel. The owner only appeared after I'd stopped: I originally thought that it was a stray. (Not an emergency stop, by the way - I genuinely do go extremely slowly when I exit.)

I'm sure my neighbours prefer it that way than the alternative of spending their summers with the smell if dog pee wafting though their gardens.

I am vegetarian, so not an issue. My food is not grown in the excrement and urine of animals that are meat-eaters - and I think that is the issue with dog wee. High nitrogen, very smelly etc, which is very different from the urine of animals that are herbivores. In fact, I am a big lover of horse poo etc as I use it for my garden - it is fab stuff.

You are seriously naive to think your veggie food is not contaminated by meat eaters poo

Pistachiocake · 30/03/2026 00:21

cobrakaieaglefang · 28/03/2026 21:29

In the UK rain will wash it away. Female dogs tend to piss downwards not up things as they squat.

I find it more gross when fully grown adults feel the need ( mainly men!)to piss everywhere. Just use toilets you skanky gits, public, pubs, garages, shops..not a lay by, not the town centre, not walls outside shops.

Seen too many grown adults of both sexes do this (now I realise some people have genuine medical issues, but lots of them don't). Women squatting down, men just leaving both sorts of waste. A group of people did this on a local children's play area, and left all sorts of rubbish, too. Yes police came, but our kids couldn't use the play area.
I don't have a problem with dogs weeing, as they are only animals.

I don't think that is what I was saying.

I meant to make the point that the urine of animals that live on a meat diet have more unpleasant urine than those that are herbivores. I apologise if that wasn't clear.

As I have to give thought to them all the time, as I encounter dog piss all the time, and have kids who will loiter round tree roots and sit on benches where dogs have lifted their legs, I often think about it. We walk up a grassy pathway every day to school, a place that is used by dog walkers, and the kids go onto the verges, pick up sticks from the edge, look at the butterflies on the brambles etc, and I know damn well they are walking in dog piss. I know it is hard to control where dogs wee, as they seem to do it twenty times in a short distance, marking territory, which is why I wonder if owners would consider carrying a water bottle and give it a quick squirt to dilute. It also causes an imbalance in the eco system.

I wonder if a dog-wee lover could come and tell me why it is acceptable to let their dog do it.

You've had kids. The environmental impact of additional humans is exponentially greater than animal wee.

Catladywithacat · 30/03/2026 05:51

Rain washes it and foxes, hedgehogs, squirrels, birds, rabbits, insects shit and pee all over grass as well this is so strange it annoys you

And yet dog owners, mostly, think it is highly reasonable to pick up their dog poo, despite the poo of wild animals being around.

Catladywithacat · 30/03/2026 05:51

Exactly this

I am not really arguing that the key reason I hate dog piss is for its environmental impact, although I do think it is an issue, as concentrated numbers of dogs access particular areas and piss in the same places to mark, which does upset the balance. I am arguing that it is deeply unpleasant, due to its stink, and its nitrogen-rich quality, and that I don't want to sit on grass where they have pissed, or for my kids to be poking around tree roots where they piss, or for them to get it on their clothes. Yes, it may rain, but we all know we get prolonged periods when it does not rain. If it rained daily, I don't think it would be an issue. If it doesn't rain for three or four weeks, it is a problem.

There are a significant number of people who do agree with me, if you look at the AIBU. I have, currently and by default, to be considerate of dog owners. Perhaps dog owners need also to be considerate, especially as there are quite a lot of people who feel the same as me.

OP posts:
Talkingtomyhouseplants · 30/03/2026 08:55

I agree with you OP. It’s not about other animas weeing it’s about dog wee specifically. Something about it, I’m not sure if it’s acidity or something, seems far more damaging than a cat/fox/rabbit. That’s how you end up with these large stains and why dog owners often have patches of dead grass in their garden in the summer.

Its also a problem because if one has weed their once, it will encourage more to try and use it as a wee spot because they can smell it even if we can’t. So people like the OP end up with a semi constant stream of dog piss against their wall which is unsightly (because of the staining) and smells.

Dog owners should be pulling their dog away from private property but they don’t because they can’t be bothered. All the more reason why you should only have dogs if you have a reasonable amount of your own private land on which they can piss and shit to their hearts content.
