Are you getting your moan in, in advance? The clocks haven't gone forward yet. Or back, come to that.

Scarabhead · 26/03/2026 19:10

@MrsCompayson I would love a house in a field, can't afford it unfortunately, I don't mind kids playing, it's the footballs against the fence that give me the rage, and the lazy parenting that allows them to do it, I do tell them not to, but it's a lottery as to whether they remember, just go to the park. The garden is too small for footballs anyway.

Very ageist comment.
You realise pensioner's were children once? Perhaps they were better behaved.
Maybe the birth rate is falling because shrieking/thumping footballs is not conducive to erotic pleasure.....

It's also pretty ageist to assume children are the only ones contributing antisocial noise in the summer.

Plenty of adults blasting loud music etc and having annoying noisy building work done. But it's kids that are the problem

Bored Journo?

The clocks go forward and it’s not until Sunday, so it’s amazing you’re experiencing this in the future.

Why are so many people missing the OP's second post?

She only made two of them 👀🤣

I didn't say that...... was responding to pp.
Building work can't really be compared to loud anti social behaviour; the first is often necessary.

Dymaxion · 26/03/2026 19:19

I don't mind the sounds of children playing out, but the sound of a ball being repeatedly kicked at a fence drives me insane !

To be fair to children, they spend a lot of time being quiet and using inside voices at school, and then out into a playground for some feral fun where noise is acceptable, so you can see why outside play = noise for them.

In that case you don't live somewhere with an end wall that kids use for tennis or football practice.

Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump

How long would it take for you to get sick of it?

Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump 10 minutes?

Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump 20?

Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump half an hour?

Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump half a day?

Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump

Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump

Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump

WHUMP Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump Whump whump whump whump .... whump-whump whump whump whump whump

Whump

I'm not normally that fussed by background noise, but when I am I just put some classical music on - via headphones, if needed.

Like many things in life, if you do what's within your power and accept what you can't change you end up much happier than if you just rage and seethe about it...

LlynTegid · 26/03/2026 19:20

Maybe if we had the same time zone all year round, and did not plunge people into early darkness in November until March, it would be more gradual.

outerspacepotato · 26/03/2026 19:21

Sonato · 26/03/2026 16:30

Ha! Im that blinded by rage I obviously cant tell the time, did of course mean forward

Rage fuels time travel. That's good to know.

😂

moto748e · 26/03/2026 19:25

I remember promising myself, when I was a kid, around 12 or 13, kicking a football around in the street, that when I was old, I wouldn't be like those miserable old gits who were always moaning at us to "Piss orf up your own end!". I've tried to live up to that ever since. 😀

TeflonMom · 26/03/2026 19:27

There are some miserable fuckers on this thread. Complaining about children playing outside. Off you fuck to the pine forest if you don’t want to be disturbed by other people living in close proximity to you. Or get some earplugs/ headphones.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 26/03/2026 19:28

It's Death Squad Screams here.

Apparently it only takes two children and a paddling pool and you'd swear murder was being committed. I don't mind children yelling, but the high pitched screaming gets a bit wearing.

I like to hear the neighbours children. They are sometimes a bit loud, but they’re just having fun. I don’t have any who spend hours booting a ball at a fence though. I definitely wouldn’t like that.

PistachioTiramisu · 26/03/2026 19:34

But WHY don't parents tell their children to stop screaming and annoying neighbours? I really cannot understand it.

sittingonabeach · 26/03/2026 19:35

Footballs against fences are very anti social. Most gardens are not big enough for playing football games. That’s what parks are for.

GiantYorkshirePud · 26/03/2026 19:50

Had a few summers of kids playing football in the middle of the street, hitting cars, windows and breaking fences. Leaving trash on the green. Loud awful music etc. Parents have quad bikes they love to rev.

This summer is my revenge (yes immature), I have a toddler, who likes to get up at 5:30am, we will be playing in the garden alot…nice and early 😃

MrsLizzieDarcy · 26/03/2026 19:55

I never mind listening to children playing except for next door's whinging 4 year old that was out on the trampoline at 7.30am last weekend. 10 minutes in, I was ready to go out and tell Mum to put him back to bloody bed and give us all a break. They're very intense older first time parents and fuck me, it's draining to listen to let alone live. 100% gentle parenting and already the boy is showing signs of being in absolute control. I'm dreading this weekend....

Ah here’s someone who lets their kids express themselves 🤣

SatsumaDog · 26/03/2026 19:58

Noise cancelling headphones. I also use
white noise when I’m going to sleep.

As per usual the misers are out in force.
Ever wonder why the birth rate in the UK is dropping? It's because among our aging grumpy population, children and families simply aren't welcome now.

Once upon a time families would have been the majority in most neighbourhoods and the sound of kids playing outdoors, yes with a bit of shrieking and laughter, would have just been the norm.
Now our demographics mean grumpy pensioners outnumber everyone else and their negative attitudes to children and families are all we hear.

I love the sound of children playing out - let's all send the kids out plenty over easter and reclaim our neighbourhoods as places for families!!

I agree with this post, except in one regard. I am, apparently, a "grumpy pensioner" yet despite having no children (because I didn't want any) I couldn't care less about kids making a noise playing outside. I used to have a family living over my back fence who kicked balls, climbed onto my garage roof, shrieked and laughed - and in later years held noisy parties at night. I enjoyed listening to them, whatever hour of the day/night, because they were doing what kids/teens should be doing instead of being glued to screens.

That’s great for you but some people don’t always want to listen to music, I love music but I want to listen to it when I feel like it - not to drown out balls thumping against a fence or wall!

Or maybe someone wants to rest or are talking on the phone or may even get bad migraines like I once did.

I actually love the sound of kids playing.
I used to have my garden backing out onto a school playground and a couple of times the kids on their break times tried to speak to me when I was putting out the bins - so sweet!

Generally I prefer to hear kids laugh and shout than to hear drunk adults at a bbq. Or my next door neighbours dog barking 🙄

That said ball thumping on your fence or wall in the evenings or early in the morning is unacceptable, why are people trying to justify that? Is this why so many kids are the way they are nowadays?

Aside from the annoying or disruptive noise it can also cause damage over time. Thankfully I’ve never lived anywhere where kids have behaved like that! If they did I would certainly do something about it be it have a word with the parents or the council/landlords etc.

I don’t think the answer is always just grin and bear it, when someone is touching your property in a way that is adversely impacting you!

MrsLizzieDarcy · 26/03/2026 20:01

My kids were never allowed outside before 9am or after 8pm in the summer at weekends, and if they started screaming/shouting, they came back in a bit pronto. It's called courtesy and respect for people living around you.

StephensLass1977 · 26/03/2026 20:06

It's unfair to say "oh would you prefer them to be indoors stuck to their phones ?"when they are genuinely causing stress.

I love the sound of kids playing normally. It takes me right back to when our mum took us to the local park every day in the early 80s during the summer holidays. Nothing will ever beat those days. And, yes even back then you got the little gits pulling wheelies on their bikes and throwing stuff at old people's windows, etc.

But. I had to leave London because we were subjected to a severe campaign of harassment by a huge group of kids. They pulled knives on us on our own doorstep, and tried to attack us with fireworks. Absolutely no reason for any of it.

So now if I see well behaved kids, I am absolutely loving it. When I see gangs of kids on bike, it's almost like a PTSD thing and I turn and go the other way. I get really nervous. I do think kids can be cocky though. Eg if we walk past the purpose built kids park in our development, they'll always heckle you. Buut I did similar as a kid, so..

Lukilols · 26/03/2026 20:11

Absolutely. It’s unfair but also ridiculous to say that because I was a 90s kid and played out for hours, but there was loads of things we did that didn’t involve kicking a ball at someone’s fence or wall.

Yes, a ball may have occasionally hit a fence or a wall but it wasn’t like we were deliberately or frequently bouncing a ball off someone’s property.
