What’s wrong with me, hospital clueless

elm26 · 26/03/2026 15:24

Yesterday at 1pm, I put my 6 month old on the rug with his toys and went for a wee.

As I was walking back I had a sudden severe pain in my right side radiating into my lower back and up to my shoulder, I was in agony.

I called DH who was luckily only on a job 15 mins away, he came straight home and took one look at me and called ambulance, I was shouting out in pain they gave me gas and air and morphine.

I had an emergency CT when dye last night and also have a catheter as lost the ability to wee. Nothing showed on CT, they got me settled on morphine and today I’ve had a transvaginal scan which shows ovaries and womb look normal.

Gynae can’t find a reason so they’ve stopped painkillers and just giving me paracetamol but somethings wrong I feel like somebody’s twisting my insides. The gynae consultant was horrible and said the surgical team will come see me if they think it’s worth it?? So I’m waiting for that if they come.

I’m in so much pain and genuinely scared they’ll send me home not knowing what is wrong with me.

Has anyone has anything similar?

Wow, this is so similar to my experience. I had my first attack when I was pregnant then my second one weeks after birth. I got three different diagnoses from OOH, 111 and walk in, indigestion, gastroenteritis and gastritis. I remember talking to a doctor in A&E saying that I'd had a completely unmedicated birth two weeks prior and this was similar pain levels and she just did a little laugh. I wasn't given any painkillers at all. It really ruined the newborn time for me, the pain and the anxiety, it all came to a head when I eventually was admitted to hospital urgently with pancreatitis and jaundice and had my gallbladder removed weeks later. I'm sorry you had a similar experience, absolutely awful.

And mine! So many times fobbed off with indigestion.

Was finally diagnosed with gallstones after my first bout of pancreatitis and then gallbladder removed after my 2nd bout. Its taught me to advocate for myself a lot more.

Sounds like a prolapse disk that’s putting pressure on your nerves and stopping you from being able to pee, especially with your history of sciatica. This is a medical emergency, go back to a&e and relay your symptoms with emphasis on your nerve pain etc.
I think if doctors are lead down one path (gynaecology in your case) they are sometimes unable to see the whole picture

Thisismynewname23 · 28/03/2026 20:08

I hope you are feeling better and have got some help today x

Gallbladder?

AlexStocks · 28/03/2026 20:13

Reminds me of my acute pancreatitis. Did they scan the panc or only gyno?

Have you had a c section, some times the scar tissue can adhere to other organs?

Just a thought

When I had a colonoscapy I opted for no sedation. All was going well until I felt the most unbearable pain. The person performing the proceedure said I would need sedation as the pain would only get worse if I didn't have it. He said he could see that I'd had a C section and scar tissue had formed on my colon. Thankfully I had a canula already in place. I hadn't realised how much damage C sections caused and I've had two, both as an emergency.

Diarrhoea after eating? Have they considered coeliac disease? Insist on finding out what is wrong, this can't be right. So sorry you are unwell, hope you get some answers

teenagedirtbag1990 · 28/03/2026 20:23

gall stones.

Pearshaped20 · 28/03/2026 20:24

If you feel you are deteriorating you can ask about Martha's Rule (getting a second opinion) there should be some information on the hospitals website. You can also speak to PALS if you feel your care hasn't been what it should. Hope you get to the bottom of your pain

“Insist on finding out what is wrong”

Well that’s it then, problem solved

This sounds just like my ruptured ovarian cyst. The surgical team were also useless with me and thought I was playing them for painkillers. I remember how terrified I was that nobody was taking my pain seriously. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Are you in the midlands by any chance? Just wondering if we’re stuck with the same useless doctor! An internal vaginal ultrasound showed excess fluid for me.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 28/03/2026 20:47

i would say you passed a gallstone.

BigBoxOfBees · 28/03/2026 20:57

Ask them for a CA125 test. It costs them less than £1 and based on a history of endometriosis could be important.

Just ask, please.

Ovaryinatwist · 28/03/2026 20:59

NC as this is all very specific

@elm26 3 years ago I was walking down the corridor in my house and I felt a twinge low on my right side of my abdomen. Then quickly severe pain and I dropped to the floor and crawled a couple of metres to the toilet and vomited due to pain (no nausea). I could not get into a comfortable position. I was home with DC and uncharacteristically rang my DH as I was thinking may have to ring an ambulance.

Then after ?30 mins pain went, completely, and I felt 100% fine. I later passed some blood in my urine. I didn't have a urine infection.

I ignored this as I was fine. A couple of days later it happened again I got an intramuscular injection of diclofenac 75mg within 10 mins, no help. Each time it was severe, debilitating. On the 3rd time I rang an urgent care centre, had a CT but by the time I got there and long before I went into scanner, pain was better. CT scan fine, no kidney stones. They said it may be constipation but I know it wasn't constipation - I know that is sore, but this was a squeezing, debilitating pain and when it went, I was fine - it happened with constipation but also happened when I definitely was not constipated. Bloods were fine.

I had another episode of passing blood in urine. Then happened another couple of times, one time for a couple of hours, I took 2 x 30/500 cocodamol painkillers, it didn't seemed to help.

I went to see a gynaecologist privately and she said it may be ovarian torsion, but someone would only be able to detect this if I had an internal ultrasound scan at the time of the pain.

It happened one more time, I went to A&E, I tried to book in at the reception but I couldn't stand properly, thought I might vomit and lay on A&E toilet floor (I know you don't know me but this is not somewhere I would lie in normal circumstances) the pain went, and I have never had it since.

All in all this was about a 3-4 week timescale. I guess I'll never know for sure. I am in my mid 40s and have no health problems.

A CA125 test will just indicate inflammation. It isn’t a diagnostic test.

Ovaryinatwist · 28/03/2026 21:04

Even though I don't even know what I had, please read about ovarian torsion, ovarian cyst rupture would leave signs on scan after and should be a 1 time thing so I think less likely.

When I was pregnant with my first I had the exact same pain. Sharp and absolute agony and it started in my back and up to my shoulder blade, I thought for awhile it was trapped wind? I was around 28 weeks pregnant at this point, and even though my first I just somehow knew it wasn’t labour or related to pregnancy on some way. The pain got significantly worse and the only time I got any relief at all ( and this was a tiny bit of relief) was in the bath in scalding hot water. I eventually started throwing up and writhing in pain so my partner drove me to the hospital. We had already called 111 and they could hear me screaming in the background in agony so they had a place on a ward for me already, except for some unknown reason it was the acute geriatric ward. I was 24 years old and 28 weeks pregnant so not sure why I was sent there. When we pulled up at the hospital it was around 5 am an I collapsed on the carpark floor and was vomiting and screaming in agony my partner had to carry me all the way up several flights of stairs with me screaming and sobbing and throwing up. I was then left in a triage room where I carried on sobbing and screaming in pain and this pretty much continued for the next few hours. At this point my sick was green so just pure stomach acid, and I thought I was dying , the pain was nothing I had experienced. I eventually got given liquid morphine which helped knock me out, then I was sent for a scan. Nothing coming up with gall bladder or the baby (thank god even though I kept having to remind them I was pregnant and needed them to check my baby?!) the pain was returning and I was continuing to vomit. Eventually a specialist did another ultrasound and the could see that my baby was lying in such a position my kidney was obstructed. Essentially it was backed up with urine from her lying across and squishing it. They only checked my kidneys due to me being pregnant and otherwise said because my bloods didn’t show infection it wasn’t a kidney infection. Which it wasn’t, it was a kidney blockage essentially, but that doesn’t necessarily flag up inflammatory markers or infection markers on urine samples. I was then going to have surgery to have a stent inserted to manually drain my urine, however baby moved and the relief was almost instant. Still felt rough for a few days but the pain went immediately. That was nearly 12 years ago and I’ve had another two babies since plus lots of other infections, illnesses, a broken bone etc etc. Without a shadow of a doubt this was the worse pain I have ever felt in my life and I’d rather go through my first 60+ hour long labour 100 times over then experience that pain again. I genuinely thought I was dying and the helplessness I felt was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It really sounds to me like a kidney problem, and reading your posts about endometriosis I wonder if this has caused issues with the kidney, and is causing it to become impacted and backed up. The lack of weeing and the pain you have described along with blood results etc being ‘ fine’ makes me think it must be something along these lines. I’d push for a referral and a scan of your kidneys, because if it is caused by endo it won’t just disappear this will keep happening 😔 so sorry your experience was traumatic and hopefully once sorted you feel able to complain and raise the concerns around your experience. What you have gone through isn’t ok and you shouldn’t be medically gaslit and your pain minimised. Good luck xxx

BigBoxOfBees · 28/03/2026 21:10

Incorrect it’s a marker for the proteins in Ovarian cancer. Having seen a family member similarly dismissed multiple times (with endometriosis history and prior heavy periods, similar pain history) prior to discovering late stage ovarian cancer it seems wise to ask for this simple, quick check.

Jesus why do people keep giving completely irrelevant advice, on this thread and another one Im on

Marthas rule does not apply here. OP is not deteriorating, her readings are fine.

Oh do give your head a wobble - in what world are reduced sats/suboptimal obs “fine”?

But for the morphine, she would almost certainly be deteriorating - I.e. pain would be uncontrolled

Take your nasty commentary elsewhere thank you very much

Are her readings deteriorating? Thats what fine means. She isnt getting worse

Its unpleasant and has happened to me to go home with pain management but no clarity about where the pain is coming from so away with your stupid accusations about being 'nasty', its factual. They would laugh her out of the ward to ask for what is being suggested.

No. She wouldn’t.

And as someone who
has been responsible for rolling this out, I can categorically state that you are factually incorrect

In terms of patient safety, it is ALWAYS preferable to make the call. An extra review isn’t going to cause a problem. But even taking into consideration the amount of paperwork that needs to be completed if something goes wrong, it’s always better to do that review. Always.

ReinsOfBucephalus · 28/03/2026 21:43

I really feel for you op, I had similar and it ended up being a kidney stone. Nothing could be found but hey presto, I popped one out a few days later.

Definitely a pain worse than childbirth. I was sweating, writhing and vomiting too.

I think gall and kidney stones are very easily missed somehow.
