To think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

WaterfallGlitter6 · 23/03/2026 18:39

I’ve had my license since I was 18 and I’m now 21 (22 next week). The insurance cost (£2,600 a year!!) for my Tiguan is insane even though I’ve never had an accident or claimed on my insurance at all. I understand that it’s higher because people my age are more likely to have accidents (I’ve never been involved in one and drive carefully) but for people who have never had to claim on their insurance and who drive carefully it’s unfair. I also understand it’s higher too because I have a Tiguan but I still think insurance prices are insanely high. AIBU to think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

You still don't need a 67 plate tiguan. 1 adult and 2/3 kids is target for pretty much all car sizes.

I can’t believe the negative comments on here. I think the price of insurance is disgusting, how are the young meant to afford these prices and having a car enables them to get jobs easier. She might have been given or bought the car. I have great sympathy for young drivers. My Nextdoor neighbours boy was been quoted 3k. I pay a lot (£1,200) but I drive an expensive car.

Because it isn't personal. It is statistical.

With a black box are there limits on when you can drive your car?

There are. They don't much like you driving after 10pm.

I checked 2 other companies but didn’t use a comparison site but maybe I should have done.

Take minutes, often saves hundreds of pounds. You can’t be that bothered if you made a £2k+ decision without doing ten minutes of research on it.

Do you know what time until in the morning please?

Totally depends on the insurer, easy enough to get one with no time restrictions

Ineedanewsofa · 23/03/2026 19:45

Also, can people stop piling on the OP for not knowing the ins and outs of how to get a good car insurance deal? She’s 22 FFS and it sounds like she’s got a lot on…
The amount of threads that appear on here where people have sod all clue about mortgages, loans, pensions but don’t attract half the vitriol this thread has! Almost like she’s being punished for driving a slightly more expensive car

6am, I believe. It might depend on individual insurer. You may also get away with doing it once or twice if you otherwise never break any rules (there is a very small tolerance for going over the speed limit). Once you accumulated a few mishaps, you remain in amber for quite a long time even if you otherwise drive perfectly.
I drove on it for a year and tossed it. Not because I was breaking any rules - I was in green for the vast majority of the time - but because of the stress it was causing me. I looked at my speedometer far more than I was looking in my mirrors. Completely unsafe, in my opinion.

Neveragain3 · 23/03/2026 19:46

Age is the biggest factor and of course there’s nothing you can do about that other than drive lower insurance group cars while you build up a full NCB.

I’m mid 40’s and pay £450 for fully comp and business use on a 60k car. That’s the least I’ve ever paid despite mostly having vastly inferior cars when I was younger.

How can it be disgusting?

It's a statistical calculation, if the population of young drivers took more care and drove better that would feed through into lower premiums

There might be lower insurance group bigger cars . My niece drove her grandpas old berlingo as it was very cheap to insure. What do you need the size for?

My 22YO niece got a Yeti for the same reason.

It has an astonishing amount of room for a car with a relatively small footprint.

Thinking about it now that’s my worry that it would distract me but I don’t know what to do, not sure if I should look in to black box insurance or not now.

unfortunately it’s partly your age, partly you choice of car and partly where you live. My DD’s insurance 2 years ago when she was you age was £710 but was a small car and our area is very cheap for insurance (mine is £202 this year). Smaller car with black box and tracker perhaps

If only there were a way of checking insurance prices before buying a car.

There is. Ask a broker. Use AI.

I just feel that compared to other countries we are being ripped off.

SunnyspellsandScatteredshowers · 23/03/2026 19:53

The black box policies doesn't always mean you can't drive at unsociable times, late or early. My 20yr old has a policy with Ticker, just about to renew for a 3rd year, it's gone down from £1200 after passing to £570 for next year. We found it through a comparison site, saving £300 on the exact same policy, so it really pays to shop around.
Ignore the negative and unkind comments OP, I think you are to be commended for fostering at your age.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/03/2026 19:53

That’s extortionate but I guess is in line with the risk for you and that type of car in your area.

My car is a similar size and age.

i’m nearly 30 years older than you and my insurance was £289 this year.

My 17 year old’s with a black box on a
small Peugeot was £900.

we live in South Wales

Have you shopped around, tried adding other named drivers etc?

I don’t have anyone else I can add to the insurance unfortunately.

Which other countries? Are there ones that don't price insurance based on claims experience?

Even if there are how is that relevant to the UK insurance industry?

cestlavielife · 23/03/2026 19:55

Why do you need tiguan? If is for work then you just have to live with the cost

RosesAndHellebores · 23/03/2026 19:58

@WaterfallGlitter6 if your are fostering three children aged 22, I take my hat off to you and imagine your circumstances are complex. Do you have a social worker who can signpost you to additional carers' support and life advice.

OonaStubbs · 23/03/2026 19:59

Young people are much more likely to be bad and reckless drivers and have accidents where the costs can run into millions. That's why young people pay more for car insurance.

Goatsarebest · 23/03/2026 20:00

Codyrhodesisaheel · 23/03/2026 19:02

I’ve always thought there should be a system where if you sign up and do a number of additional driving lessons (not necessarily a test, we all know the shitshow there) with a trained instructor you should be eligible to have reduced insurance premiums.

We all get into bad habits, so if you could have an ad hoc lesson every now or then and have the instructor log it to your driving licence number, you’d have proof that you were safe to drive. Almost like a drivers MOT.

if you think about it it’s mad you can pass at 17, and never have to do any kind of training or lessons until you’re 75+

There is. Do the advanced driving course and you will get discounts.
