To think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

I’ve had my license since I was 18 and I’m now 21 (22 next week). The insurance cost (£2,600 a year!!) for my Tiguan is insane even though I’ve never had an accident or claimed on my insurance at all. I understand that it’s higher because people my age are more likely to have accidents (I’ve never been involved in one and drive carefully) but for people who have never had to claim on their insurance and who drive carefully it’s unfair. I also understand it’s higher too because I have a Tiguan but I still think insurance prices are insanely high. AIBU to think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

I don't usually use brokers, but they were really helpful when I had to buy some non-standard insurance. And the premium was less than I expected. So when they came up on Google I was confident in passing on the link. Good luck!

Thank you for passing on the link, I really do appreciate it. I’m planning to contact them in the morning

It's maybe already been mentioned, but if you are putting that you are as a foster carer as a job in that section that might also be increasing your quotes unfortunately, as they might categorise that as using the car in a business capacity for taking children to appointments etc.

I mean you probably have to declare this accurately anyway, but it might mean changing car does not make such a huge difference as this aspect. Guess you would have to play around with quotes for different car types to see.

My current insurer said it has to include business use too as well as personal use because I’m a foster carer

I don’t have a Tiguan for the reason that it’s cool or anything like that, that wasn’t something that crossed my mind when choosing the car

Edited

But surely @you'd have ran an insurance quote through before buying it

WaterfallGlitter6 · 26/03/2026 13:41

I’ve found a cheaper insurance quote for £1,400 now which is less than with my current insurer

I'm glad to hear it. Obviously it's still a lot for you, but at least it's significantly less, and hopefully means you don't have to go through selling and buying just yet, with the sunk costs involved in that.

Get a cheaper car ... do most cars not have 4 seats?

That’s great. It really does pay to invest a bit of time every year to make sure you’re getting the best deal possible.

When you are ready to change your car, remember to check the insurance group of the new ones that you’re considering.

She has a baby and two toddlers to care for. So three car seats and at least a double buggy, plus general baby/toddler stuff. A Micra or Corsa isn't going to do the job.

People are going on like a nigh-on 10 year old Tiguan is a fire-breathing behemoth

No we're not.

This country (and I'm lifelong British) has gone completely nuts when it comes to cars.

People on this thread seriously think a new driver in their 20s should be driving a Tiguan and that it's a perfectly viable car, that they should be entitled to own.

If it was viable, the OP @WaterfallGlitter6 wouldn't even have to create the thread - she wouldn't even notice the insurance cost coming out of her pocket.

Sadly for all the SUV fanatics on this thread, it is NOT viable really. The OP is having to do multiple searches, mental gymnastics etc to justify it.

There are actually other car types which exist for people with busy lives and requirements to transport lots of folk.

A Touran (same manufacturer) is cheaper, 10 insurance bands lower, better fuel economy, and less likely to be stolen.

It just doesn't look as "cool".

An Octavia would sit people comfortably (why is it one of the most popular taxi brands?!) and has a HUGE boot. It also sits several insurance bands lower, better fuel economy, less likely to be stolen.

Again, it just doesn't look as cool.

I think this thread becomes tiresome where some folk think car model first, then insurance second, and try and complain that insurance should be cheap whatever you buy.

It's why we see so many young folk in absurdly expensive car models, because their parents love the "safety factor" of an SUV (hint: saloon, hatchback and estate cars were safe before SUVs!) and the style points.

What a good post. Entirely correct. People are fixated on buy the biggest and best they can get without giving any thought to the downsides.

Estate cars are available from ford, vw, skoda etc etc.

SUV's are not even big cars. They are the worst of everything.

I'm really pleased someone has posted this and thank you @Tessasanderson

The number of people on these threads who go "it's not our fault, the only cars manufacturers make these days are SUVs"

And yet like you said:

Skoda make the Octavia and Superb
Volkswagen are still selling the Golf, Passat and the Touran MPV model.
Seat are still selling the Leon in hatchback and estate forms
Toyota still sell the Corolla in hatchback and estate forms

I could go on and on with every manufacturer on sale

The reality is that people choose to ignore large hatchbacks, MPVs and estates, because of car fashion

And then refuse to admit that on here, so have to make up an excuse by saying "no one sells anything but SUVs these days"

What they meant to say is, "no one sells anything I'm prepared to buy other than a SUV these days".

OP stop bloody moaning and buy a cheaper car! There’s no need for you to have a Tiguan at your age!

It’s a £10k car not a bloody Ferrari. Plenty of people the OP’s age driving MUCH more expensive cars. Aside from it being a VW it’s a completely sensible basic family car.

It's always good to shop around for insurance.

My best mate drives an older Dacia Duster which is a decent size car and is only insurance group 7 so would be much cheaper to insure.

Mama2many73 · 28/03/2026 15:03

Do uou need a large powerful car? Ive just looked on line and prices were from 1200 so assume Blackpool is part if the issue as well.
Our teenager is looking at cars that fall into group 1.or.2 so, even though insurance is expensive we are trying to get it as low.as possible.

It really isn’t a powerful car, not by any stretch of the imagination.

Its all based around popular cars and also your career and annual mileage. I have a 21 year old driving a type R civic and his insurance for this year is £460. My 18 year old drives a T sport celica and his is £760. Both don't have black boxes. We all have Admiral multi car insurance. Both the boys cars are non typical cars for an U25 year old and less on the road so less statistics to base quotes on.

Yup, our 23 year old son's car insurance costs just under £400 p.a. - car is 18 years old this Summer. Purposely looked at insurance bands before choosing a car to get the cheapest band for the car size he needed, then when he had a short list, he put the reg numbers into the comparison sites to check which would end up cheapest to insure, and bought that one!

It's not sensible if the OP can't afford the insurance. It's quite a high insurance band. There are lots of cars of similar size/function in lower insurance bands.

Nail on the head. It's people choosing due to fashion rather than function/use which is the problem. A mid size estate usually has a bigger boot capacity than an average MPV - some MPV boots are ridiculously small and are often a very low realistic load capacity due to the boot door shape, or wide wheel arches, etc.

That's relative. It's more expensive than some suitable alternatives.
