To think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

I’ve had my license since I was 18 and I’m now 21 (22 next week). The insurance cost (£2,600 a year!!) for my Tiguan is insane even though I’ve never had an accident or claimed on my insurance at all. I understand that it’s higher because people my age are more likely to have accidents (I’ve never been involved in one and drive carefully) but for people who have never had to claim on their insurance and who drive carefully it’s unfair. I also understand it’s higher too because I have a Tiguan but I still think insurance prices are insanely high. AIBU to think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

Because I also foster 2 of my siblings and our cousin so I need a car big enough to fit everyone in and everything.

So, get a ten year old scenic or picasso. 1.6L

DD has an Hyundai i10. It costs about £4/500, although she's 27. It has 4 seats. For generations women managed three dc with a mini metro.

I think OP’s going to drip feed some extra information

She just has.

You're going to have to pay what it costs aren't you? Nothing inherently unfair about it.

Ninerainbows · 23/03/2026 19:11

Well, a Ford Kuga with a 1.5ltr engine would be cheaper to insure.

Rayna37 · 23/03/2026 19:12

Ok, so you don’t need big and powerful though (I was wondering if you were towing a horse box or something!) you need a people carrier not an SUV. The less cool the better! VW Touran or Sharan would be better than a Tiguan; something like a Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall even better I’d think.

WhereYouLeftIt · 23/03/2026 19:12

YABU.

Car insurance costs are affected by statistics - which are objective and therefore not 'unfair'.

Your costs will be affected by

  • Your age (statistical likelihood of accidents / speeding / inexperience)
  • Your profession (again, statistics)
  • Car engine size
  • Car value
  • Cost of repairs (some cars are more expensive to repair than others)
  • Whether garaged overnight / parked on drive /parked on-street
  • Local car-crime rates

If it's more expensive to insure a car at your age, it's because there are decades worth of stats showing the likelihood of your age group putting in more claims / more expensive claims.

You will age out of that factor. You chose your car (value, engine size, repair costs) - CHOSE. Your choices have made your insurance cost more.

Sensiblesal · 23/03/2026 19:15

people are being kinda rude to you OP like explaining insurance group when you already knew.

my insurance dropped by £150 this year to £170 & I was like my god I’ve hit the old people insurance premiums (they go up again when you get to oap stage)

just got a new car which is also group 21 & its gone back up to £400 so just over what I paid last year for lower group car & lower value.

It will come down probably when you hit 25ish, the only other option is to find a lower group vehicle. Stick the car details on a comparison site and it will tell you if a black box is worth it

StrawberryElephants · 23/03/2026 19:17

Get an old manual Citroën Picasso - it will fit everyone in and be cheaper to insure. You dont need a powerful car, you just need a big one.

A black box is significantly cheaper. About 8 years ago when I passed my test - insurance was £1200 with black box - over £2000 without.

If you've already taken out a policy it might be too late. I dont think you could just opt to add one mid-insurance year.

WaterfallGlitter6 · 23/03/2026 19:07

Because I also foster 2 of my siblings and our cousin so I need a car big enough to fit everyone in and everything.

Then get a less fashionable and cheaper car. You'll get much, much more space in a Sharan, Picasso, Touran and the like and it will be much cheaper to insure.

You still don't need a group 21 Tiguan.

You could buy a smaller engined people carrier and have enough room for everyone.

IndigoBabble · 23/03/2026 19:19

I’m assuming you had done a comparison check? Never stick with the same provider without checking on comparison sites. Also could you add a parent or another older adult to your policy? Usually reduces premium too!

I’ll have a look at those cars, thank you so much

I was thinking that. I'm old but we got seven of us in a Morris 1100 traveller and survived. Not legal now, obviously 😁

I haven’t got anyone else I can add to the policy unfortunately.

Have you shopped around for quotes? Never accept the renewal from your current insurer without checking other companies.
Gocompare is a good site.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 23/03/2026 19:23

If only there were a way of checking insurance prices before buying a car.

Catza · 23/03/2026 19:24

If you need a big car (which I don't think you do as plenty of people use smaller cars for three kids), you can get VW caddy which is insurance class 8 and has all the space you need to carry half of your possessions.

Ineedanewsofa · 23/03/2026 19:26

Insurance is a rip off @WaterfallGlitter6, particularly for young drivers. I’m over 40 but because I do 20k miles per year and want to be comfortable doing it (I’d have a nervous breakdown doing that mileage in a bloody picanto!) my insurance is still over £700 a year - I’ve been driving since I was 17 and have NEVER claimed!
Young drivers who work in the rural economy are particularly penalised, they often need powerful, large vehicles for work (towing, carrying loads etc) and have no choice other than to pay the astronomical costs

I checked 2 other companies but didn’t use a comparison site but maybe I should have done.

My sons car insurance was nearly always over 1k a year - I know as I paid for it 😂
since he hit 31 like 500
thats on a 2litre BMW Sport

But my dog insurance cost more than my insurance on my new Volvo xc40 😂

Of course you should have done, you can't not know they exist, why didnt you?

Labelledelune · 23/03/2026 19:30

I can’t believe the negative comments on here. I think the price of insurance is disgusting, how are the young meant to afford these prices and having a car enables them to get jobs easier. She might have been given or bought the car. I have great sympathy for young drivers. My Nextdoor neighbours boy was been quoted 3k. I pay a lot (£1,200) but I drive an expensive car.

If you foster three children a week you must be receiving a fair amount in allowance??

WaterfallGlitter6 · 23/03/2026 19:09

The car doesn’t have a black box, should I look in to that? Will that help reduce the cost?

Hugely! I can't believe you haven't done so. My daughter has had one for three years and it's saved her a fortune.

bignewprinz · 23/03/2026 19:34

My first car cost me £900 to buy and £1100 to insure in 1997. According to Google, that's £2500 now. So thus it has always been, OP.

(Citroen AX GT if your wondering - utter heap of shite - yours sounds much nicer)

WaterfallGlitter6 · 23/03/2026 19:37

With a black box are there limits on when you can drive your car?
