To think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

WaterfallGlitter6 · 23/03/2026 18:39

I’ve had my license since I was 18 and I’m now 21 (22 next week). The insurance cost (£2,600 a year!!) for my Tiguan is insane even though I’ve never had an accident or claimed on my insurance at all. I understand that it’s higher because people my age are more likely to have accidents (I’ve never been involved in one and drive carefully) but for people who have never had to claim on their insurance and who drive carefully it’s unfair. I also understand it’s higher too because I have a Tiguan but I still think insurance prices are insanely high. AIBU to think car insurance prices are insane and it’s unfair?

I’m working it out now and I’m thinking it will actually work out better to keep my current car for at least the next year rather than getting a new car yet? The cheapest insurance quote I can find for my current car is £1,800 which is cheaper than what I’m paying now. But I don’t know what to do for the best now?

It’s worth looking at other cars and other insurance quotes.

That’s the only way you’ll know what option makes sense financially

That’s what I’ve been doing but I’m still not sure what to do for the best

I think you’re right, keep your car for now but just make a really careful choice next time. Good luck!

Why? Families managed with smaller cars for years and still do

Consider an old diesel estate. A Tiguan is a ridiculous vehicle for anyone to own frankly. They're not even very big on the inside.

GreyfriarsJobbies · 25/03/2026 07:17

You're going round in circles OP. Just keep your current car if you like it and it does the job. People are going on like a nigh-on 10 year old Tiguan is a fire-breathing behemoth but the fact is you live in an area with a high risk rating and are young. As you've found car insurance is going to be pricey no matter what you go for; it's very unlikely you'll save enough to outweigh the cost to change vehicle.

Mt563 · 25/03/2026 07:42

Unfortunately I assume Blackpool is making the biggest difference to your costs. Can you park off road? They also impacts but is also very hard to change!

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 25/03/2026 07:53

I would also try an insurance broker, it costs you nothing to try and thay may be able to find you a better deal.

tamade · 25/03/2026 08:35

@WaterfallGlitter6 You have my sympathy, car insurance is a rip-off, but you just have to suck it up at your age, it does get better.
I would look at getting a lower IG car, maybe a medium estate car would fit the bill, like an Octavia.
Be careful when considering a black box, I had one for a fortnight to check my driving and it actually increased my premium, not because I was a terrible driver, but because they discovered I was commuting on a high risk road.

I do park off road, I park it on the drive

It's maybe already been mentioned, but if you are putting that you are as a foster carer as a job in that section that might also be increasing your quotes unfortunately, as they might categorise that as using the car in a business capacity for taking children to appointments etc.

I mean you probably have to declare this accurately anyway, but it might mean changing car does not make such a huge difference as this aspect. Guess you would have to play around with quotes for different car types to see.

Good point. I know someone who is a foster carer but works part time in admin and I suppose she could put down either role.

I have to disclose that I’m a foster carer though don’t I? I disclosed it on my current insurance

Ah. That's a really good point, that no-one of us has really considered.

This is a good reason to approach a broker, @WaterfallGlitter6 . They will be able to analyse why you're getting sick high quotes, and they might be able to find a specialist insurer (that won't be on comparison sites) who will cover you at a better price

Is it worth me looking at other cars then?

With all due respect, you don't seem to want to help yourself...

You're asking everyone for the answers, but you need to find them out for yourself. Look at a different model of car, look at comparison websites, look at black boxes...

Your location of Blackpool isn't going to help unfortunately. But you're the one who's going to find this out for yourself as they're your circumstances.

OP is doing all those things. What more do you want from someone? This 22 year old is trying to research this while single handedly parenting a five month old baby and two toddlers. Give her a break.

She said that she had no adults in her life to add to the insurance, so I'm assuming she also has no parental support herself.
Yes, she sounds a bit dithery, but I'd have been more than dithery if I'd been in her position at 22.

I don't usually use brokers, but they were really helpful when I had to buy some non-standard insurance. And the premium was less than I expected. So when they came up on Google I was confident in passing on the link. Good luck!

SpaceAngel1999 · 25/03/2026 16:33

My son (17) has just passed his test. His car was £2k to insure. Get a black box and a smaller car and it will probably come down

MadMumOfTwoHorrors · 25/03/2026 16:45

My son is 18. His first year insurance on a Peugeot 208 was £1500 with a black box. He just got his renewal through and it's £697 (still with the black box). I understand that your car is worth more money, but that price is insane!

No we're not.

This country (and I'm lifelong British) has gone completely nuts when it comes to cars.

People on this thread seriously think a new driver in their 20s should be driving a Tiguan and that it's a perfectly viable car, that they should be entitled to own.

If it was viable, the OP @WaterfallGlitter6 wouldn't even have to create the thread - she wouldn't even notice the insurance cost coming out of her pocket.

Sadly for all the SUV fanatics on this thread, it is NOT viable really. The OP is having to do multiple searches, mental gymnastics etc to justify it.

There are actually other car types which exist for people with busy lives and requirements to transport lots of folk.

A Touran (same manufacturer) is cheaper, 10 insurance bands lower, better fuel economy, and less likely to be stolen.

It just doesn't look as "cool".

An Octavia would sit people comfortably (why is it one of the most popular taxi brands?!) and has a HUGE boot. It also sits several insurance bands lower, better fuel economy, less likely to be stolen.

Again, it just doesn't look as cool.

I think this thread becomes tiresome where some folk think car model first, then insurance second, and try and complain that insurance should be cheap whatever you buy.

It's why we see so many young folk in absurdly expensive car models, because their parents love the "safety factor" of an SUV (hint: saloon, hatchback and estate cars were safe before SUVs!) and the style points.

ByRealLemonFox · 25/03/2026 17:54

Its all based around popular cars and also your career and annual mileage. I have a 21 year old driving a type R civic and his insurance for this year is £460. My 18 year old drives a T sport celica and his is £760. Both don't have black boxes. We all have Admiral multi car insurance. Both the boys cars are non typical cars for an U25 year old and less on the road so less statistics to base quotes on.

I don’t have a Tiguan for the reason that it’s cool or anything like that, that wasn’t something that crossed my mind when choosing the car
