Old and grumpy re. Easter eggs

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 21/03/2026 18:22

I am currently being repulsed 🤣 by all the adverts on Instagram for Easter eggs that are filled half an inch or more thick with goo and stuff. What is this about? Surely the best thing about Easter eggs has always been that thin chocolate (although I’m fully on board with nice treats inside the thin chocolate egg, I’m not a mad woman).

Has anyone tried these - was it good or bad?

I'm not bothered about the eggs themselves but can we bring back the ones that came with mugs? I lost my crunchie mug in a house move and I'm still sad about it.

Calliopespa · 21/03/2026 20:41

You cannot seriously be dissing a Cadbury's caramel creme egg?

Absolutely agree. When did we all become too good for the chocolate-branded mugs? I miss having a collection of slightly faded, garish Creme Egg, Mini Egg and Crunchie mugs taking up cupboard space…

You can buy them on ebay

Not to show off but we have a toffee crisp and mini eggs mug in our cupboard in great condition 💁‍♀️

It’s the price of them that gets me. I’ve somehow spent £100 on easter eggs for an easter egg hunt for 3 kids.

How have you managed that? In Asda biggish ones are on offer for £2.40 ISH and the baskets off smaller eggs around £3-£5 . You really didn't need to send so much.

You are gonna get grief for that, but I was literally just saying the other day my budget is going to be £100 for easter this year, 3 kids also.

That's a big egg each, couple small ones and the easter hunt. I fill those reusable eggs with packet sweets incase the dog finds any they don't! Plus some cheap activities.

Eggs are so expensive now ain't they

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/03/2026 22:17

Egg-spensive, @Vodka1?

Sorry.

Vodka1 · 21/03/2026 22:30

😂😃

FamingolosForDays · 21/03/2026 22:43

They are unbelievably expensive too 😭

God I miss the old Cadbury’s chocolate. It was always so much tastier in Easter eggs.
I refuse to buy palm oil sludge now and everything’s so extortionate I may not buy any eggs this Easter :(
I took one bite of a galaxy ripple the other day and threw it in the bin. Disgusting oily, waxy substance that was basically inedible.

MotherJessAndKittens · 22/03/2026 08:27

Glad I don’t do instagram. I get mine from Tesco as soon as they go on offer. Apart from crème eggs which have definitely got smaller (but everything has) I’ve never seen big ones filled with goo or is it the smaller ones people are talking about?

thewonderfulmrswatson · 22/03/2026 09:27

Ugh the gooey oozy ones make me feel funny for some reason.
My dh brought home a cheesecake filled easter egg yesterday and one of them viral mini egg bowls.
So unbelievably sickly sweet i had small try of each one. Made me feel sick. He loves anything like that but i'm more m&s chip & dip woman though so nothing sweet really appeals to me.

I am convinced the manufacturers use a different recipe for the Easter egg chocolate than their normal offerings. It's generally shite. Having said that, last year I was given a Sainsbury's own brand egg and was pleasantly surprised how edible I found it.

I’ve always said this since I was a kid. Could never eat them. I’m still annoyed you no longer get the mugs with them like when I was a child.

I used to get the Fortnum & Mason ones with orange and strawberry & champagne but they’ve not done them for the last couple of years. 😢

PonyPatter44 · 22/03/2026 09:35

The Hotel Chocolat eggs don't come in tins anymore. They come in recycled paper "eggshells", and you can compost them. But the price!! £35 for the extra-thick ones and NINETY BLOODY ENGLISH POUNDS for the Ostrich Egg! I could buy a real ostrich egg for that. I could probably buy an ostrich, come to that.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 22/03/2026 09:38

I noticed some orange flavour creme eggs for sale the other week which I fancied but they tasted disgusting so sweet and cheap tasting yuck :(

IlovePhilMitchell · 22/03/2026 09:49

The thing is, like Christmas and actually every other celebratory event in life, Easter is expensive as the consumer lets it be.

Lidlisthebusiness · 22/03/2026 10:03

My children got eggs a couple of years ago with mugs, we have both creme and mini egg mugs in the drawer now, so they must be out there somewhere!

Soashamed60 · 22/03/2026 10:05

mumofoneAloneandwell · 21/03/2026 18:33

Chocolate tastes shite now

A creme egg is half the size it was in the 90s, surely?

One tiny creme egg i got with an easter egg. Waste of money

Cadburys Creme eggs are a rip off now. Are they about 85p? And they are so small compared to a few years ago.
I can now fit a whole one in my mouth & eat it. Used to take me a couple of bites!

Its ridiculous!

Pushmepullu · 22/03/2026 10:26

When we were kids Easter eggs would be dropped off by family and friends in the week leading up to Easter. We weren’t allowed to touch them before Easter Sunday. My brothers taught me how to turn the egg round in the box, peel the foil back, break some chocolate off, and even remove the smarties or whatever, then rewrap the egg so it still looked whole! You can’t do that with a solid egg, life is so much more boring now😅

Vodka1 · 22/03/2026 13:50

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 21/03/2026 23:20

I mean, look at this one - how would you eat it? Why would you even want to?🤢

I think that actually looks really nice 😂

Be sick of chocolate a few bites in though

GlassHalfFullplease · 22/03/2026 13:58

Aiming4Optimistic · 21/03/2026 18:26

I was always disappointed that a creme egg Easter egg didn't contain all the crème, but instead came with 2 or 3 smaller eggs. Smartie eggs should be filled to the brim with smarties. We are royally ripped off with Easter eggs imo!

Me too! I always remember opening that egg as a child and not grasping, that it wasn't literally a giant creme egg!! What were they thinking!? (Maybe not wanting to cause a sugar induced coma).
My child self then fantasised about the other eggs doing it, cadburys caramel etc 😋 Chocolate buttons and smartie filled eggs made sense though!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/03/2026 14:06

I once used creme eggs to make ‘Scotch’ eggs with - I used chocolate biscuit crumbs, butter and syrup to make the ‘forcemeat’, moulded it round the creme eggs, and coated them in digestive biscuit crumbs, for the bread crumbing.

They were nice, but very rich and sweet.
