AIBU? Bus driver refused to let me on the bus

tulipkisses · 20/03/2026 17:12

Where I live buses can be infrequent and often delayed due to awful traffic. We also don’t have tap on/off, we have to show the driver our tickets or purchase one as we get on.

I work about a five minute walk from the bus stop. As I got to the bus stop this evening the bus was just pulling away, I checked the app and there was another one coming three minutes later.

It turned up and I put my arm out to hail it. It pulled in, someone got off and I stepped on. The driver refused to let me on because I “should have been on the earlier one”. He said if I walked onto the bus he wouldn’t pull away and would wait for me to get off, and he didn’t care about sitting there for hours to see if I’d stay on. He said he knew I was “only getting on this one for a faster journey” because it was empty compared to the one in front.

I have never experienced this in my life, I have no idea what to do? I have the number plate and I’m considering reporting it but this is just totally bizarre, should I have waited for the one after this one?

I think he said if she got on he wouldn’t move the bus until she got off?
I’d be tempted to sit on as what would he do when more people got on?

Edited

Maybe I'm being picky but 'I stepped on' says to me she was already on the bus.

JustMerelyHere · 20/03/2026 21:29

Please report

LightDrizzle · 20/03/2026 21:37

I’m absolutely incensed for you.

They must have cameras and I’d pursue it relentlessly with the bus operator.

tulipkisses · 20/03/2026 17:25

No, I have a bus pass.

I think he’s grumpy because he has a relatively empty bus and could probably get through most of his route quite quietly.

It must be this

Of course you should complain

I also had a shitty bus driver today as well. Who wouldn't let me get OFF

I've made a complaint as soon as I got home. I was a bit teary. I mean I know that was just cos I was feeling sad anyway but it tipped me over

Easterchicken · 20/03/2026 21:53

This feels like one of those things that didn't really happen ... Or there's some bits missing from the story

Sowhatywhaty · 20/03/2026 22:06

Please please report this massive twat ! Did you get your bus eventually ?

Mum28383 · 20/03/2026 22:13

Definitely email a complaint.

We have awful buses that don’t turn up, skip whole villages when they are late, etc. If this happens I spend time at the bus stop writing an irate email to the bus company. They often at the very least reimburse me my fare. Once I flagged down a bus and the driver stopped but insisted I wasn’t at a bus stop (the bus tracker said I was) and he didn’t have to pick me up. I got on anyway and during the journey I emailed the company that they needed to update the driver training because I was planning to take this bus regularly and I didn’t want to have another argument in the future or have the driver refuse to stop for me. I did get an apology from the company and haven’t had any issues at this bus stop since.

Your bus driver was outrageous though.

How on earth did he know you didn’t just arrive? It’s like he assumed you deliberately didn’t get on the first one- not that it would have mattered if you had, I sometimes avoid the bus full of teenagers getting on when school lets out because they are all little arseholes lol- just to make his life difficult. Probably thought he’d get an easier route. Completely unhinged. Complain.

Justanothermum42 · 20/03/2026 22:20

That’s utterly ridiculous! Call the bus company and report.

PropitiousJump · 20/03/2026 22:25

Was this the driver in question?😁

Think OP must still be waiting for a bus 🤔

I have got my phone out and told him to repeat his stance to video..........

Yes, me too.

PuppyMonkey · 20/03/2026 22:36

OP is still waiting for the next bus I suppose?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/03/2026 22:39

As others have said report him. I’ve actually got a nice story about a bus driver, I was recently going somewhere where I didn’t know the area or stops got off at the right stop but bus driver waited and asked if I was ok/needed directions just before I got off. It was dark too.

purpleme12 · 20/03/2026 22:48

You do get some nice ones sometimes

Unfortunately I've come across some really mardy ones too 😠

Dollymylove · 20/03/2026 22:53

I wonder who these people think they are? They are paid to do a job which is driving a bus which takes passengers on and off. They arent some superior beings that decide who is worthy of a bus ride. Get him reported and stick it on social media

grumpygrape · 20/03/2026 21:22

Maybe I'm being picky but 'I stepped on' says to me she was already on the bus.

Being literally on the first step/in front of the driver 'on the bus' Vs sitting down/standing actually within the bus are 2 different sorts of being 'on the bus'.

If I stepped onto the bus in front of the driver and he said I'm not letting you on because of X or Y, you are both technically 'on' the bus and not 'on' the bus if you see what I mean?

He probably had an empty bus because he wouldn't let anyone on!

canisquaeso · 20/03/2026 23:56

If it’s as you say it happened, report him for sure.

Bus drivers in my town every now and then also have an attitude. One didn’t let me in because he thought I was barging through (I wasn’t, I just didn’t see there was still one person left to get off the bus) and last week my friend went to ask for information and was told “but you won’t get in this bus anyway as you’ve tried to jump the queue”. She only went for info and this fabled queue was on the other bay for a different bus.

JustCabbaggeLooking · 21/03/2026 00:21

Another silly thread.

But there must be more to it .

How would the driver know she missed the first bus, Op said he didn't arrive till three minutes later .

It's a puzzle isn't it?🤔

I feelblike there must be sonethi g rhe op isnt telling us, or isnt aware of. If the bus was completely empty maybe it was out of service because it had developed a fault for exampke. Or is your bus pass only valid for certain times?

GarlicFound · 21/03/2026 00:55

grumpygrape · 20/03/2026 21:09

OP, I’m a bit confused.

You said you stepped on the bus then said the driver refused to let you on. You were either on the bus or not and even if you weren't, how would he prevent you from getting on?

How did he think you “should have been on the earlier one” if he was three minutes after that one departed?

Completely fucking batshit bus drivers are a feature, as evidenced by PPs on this thread. Logic does not necessarily apply (as they're batshit).

Our buses, out here in rural nowhere, are extremely rare and sometimes ... colourful. A few years ago, all the drivers were angry at all the passengers and prone to careering round country lanes at speed, while delivering ranting monologues about the awfulness of customers expecting to be picked up and dropped off.

They've been replaced by pleasant-seeming Eastern Europeans with no English.
