AIBU? Bus driver refused to let me on the bus

Where I live buses can be infrequent and often delayed due to awful traffic. We also don’t have tap on/off, we have to show the driver our tickets or purchase one as we get on.

I work about a five minute walk from the bus stop. As I got to the bus stop this evening the bus was just pulling away, I checked the app and there was another one coming three minutes later.

It turned up and I put my arm out to hail it. It pulled in, someone got off and I stepped on. The driver refused to let me on because I “should have been on the earlier one”. He said if I walked onto the bus he wouldn’t pull away and would wait for me to get off, and he didn’t care about sitting there for hours to see if I’d stay on. He said he knew I was “only getting on this one for a faster journey” because it was empty compared to the one in front.

I have never experienced this in my life, I have no idea what to do? I have the number plate and I’m considering reporting it but this is just totally bizarre, should I have waited for the one after this one?

Sunnyxo.....with reference to my earlier posting....have you heard the bus driver's point of view? I suspect not, and yet you sound convinced that this bus driver should be castigated. Frightening to witness this herd mentality!

Fukadoodledo · 26/03/2026 09:59

No you are not being unreasonable the bus driver was being complete arrogant pig to put it mildly. Report the idiot.

Cloudysky81 · 26/03/2026 11:36

I had this once with a bus in London. He let me on, just spent a while berating me for being entitled.
I never quite understood it, I probably should have reported it, but bit confused/shocked.

More idiots who haven't heard the bus driver's point of vbiew!

Of course this is one sided, like and thread on here. No different to any other threads

Unfortunately I've come across some shitty bus drivers sometimes who do things that don't make sense. So to me, this could be plausible.

I just made a complaint about a bus driver who wouldn't let me off last week. I had response and they didn't just rebut the complaint so they obviously thought it was a valid complaint. Said they'd do a full investigation with the depot and interview driver but I wouldn't get to know the outcome because of gdpr. I've no idea if this bus driver will just lie or they'll be able to have cameras to back it up but I know I was telling the truth so I can only hope the bus driver gets told off because it was pretty shitty.

Well at least you can see that "one story is good 'till another one's told". I don't doubt the truth of your particular anecdote. Similarly I have had some really positive encounters with bus drivers.....but this doesn't alter the fact that there are some offhand ones out there. The real point here is, as you say, that these threads can be so one-sided. It's the "lynch mob mentality" that I find worrying.

Lynch mob mentality? WTF. You're being utterly ridiculous.

You think mumsnetters are going to find this bus driver and run him out of town?

How could they?

Commonsensemom · 27/03/2026 20:16

You are definitely not being unreasonable . Horrible element everywhere … had two crazy mad experiences in last year similar to you … don’t know what is going on . Report him absolutely . Music and my church are keeping me sane . Not sure what other people are using …. Taking my employer to court and had to report another to the police . Good luck with it all

Cantona10 · 28/03/2026 12:04

No I don't think mumsnetters are going to "run him out of town", no more than they are going to lynch him. FYO not all phrases are to be taken literally.
And....I don't know how you would get the bus driver's point of view (It might come out privately if an official complaint was made about his behaviour). Meanwhile we can't just rush to conclusions on the basis of what, after all, is heresay evidence.
