Maintainence man manoeuvred my 3 year old out of the way

Today I was in a bakery with 3year old dd, she went to look at the cakes whilst I ordered. However the maintainence man kept manoeuvring her out of the way back to me whilst I was ordering because there was a vent by her legs. It resulted in dd having a massive meltdown and throwing herself on the floor

On reflection am I being unreasonable to think the maintainence man could have walked me instead of taking ds shoulders and walking her back to me?

At first I was distracted at the till and didn’t realise it was a maintainence person

That was my first thought.

Mine too, followed by Madeline McCann.

3 year old should be in your sight and if you are paying you should have said chiald infront of you or next to you - My guess is maintenece man said probably go to your mum or something and said child decided they didnt want to so they thought it best to remove child from danger ( which however should have been marked as such )

Really he was well within his rights to shout you to control your child . He sounds like he was obviously doing a job and didnt need a very young child int he way . Get a grip! At 3 you should not be so distracted that you dont click to this instantly anyway .

HelenaWilson · 20/03/2026 11:28

Well the 3yo can't read and the mother wasn't paying attention, so it wouldn't matter whether it was or wasn't.

Anyway, dangerous or not, a small child shouldn't be getting in the way of someone trying to do their job.

I'm guessing your daughter kept wandering over, to see what the maintenance man was doing? In which case, it's possible he had tools nearby that could have been dangerous if she'd touched them? Or she could have tripped/fallen over? Or was simply getting in his way? Did he not say anything to you when he guided her back to you the first time? The fact he had to do this multiple times, suggests you weren't aware where your daughter was or what she was doing? I know it's hard, when you're trying to buy/look at things, so perhaps tell her to stay with you/hold your hand? The maintenance man was stopping your daughter from hurting herself, nothing more.

Whether or not it is dangerous isn’t really relevant, the man didnt need a reason not to want a child bothering him.

Well that’s what the current climate has caused. There is a good chance that by touching someone’s child, they would get an earful. Some people would still help of course and risk it anyway but not everyone.

I can withstand an earful but I couldn't live with myself if I let a child get killed.

ForPlumReader · 20/03/2026 11:46

It's your responsibility to keep your child out of danger and out of the way of others in a public place.

And that’s fine. But lazy parents need to understand that not everyone will do their job for them, even in that situation.

They do but as an Early Years teacher of 30 years my reactions are honed to step in when there's a danger and I would. I am also used to getting an earful from parents so meh!

Do parents use reins anymore? I did when mine were small for exactly this reason. So I could keep them close to me. I can remember being told that I was treating them like animals I said ' better I treat them like an animal than they end up dead'.

Mum, is that you? Exactly what my mum used to say when busybodies said the same thing to her. I was an inveterate explorer.

Dear god why do people keep talking about Jamie burger?!? Taking your eyes off your child for a few seconds or minutes happens thousands of times every single day, in every shop in the country.

It’s quite disturbing that people are quoting one tragic incident from 30 years ago as a potential or even likely outcome. How anxious and unpleasant to have a brain like that.

Well James's mum never in a million years would have thought it would happen in seconds, but it did

gostickyourheadinapig · 20/03/2026 12:00

Your child was getting in the way of someone with work to do. What did you expect to happen?

Edited

Fair enough!

I don’t know that I would though. I’m not risking getting a mouthful from an arsehole parent!

The fact that people are bringing up an incident from so many years ago shows how rare it is.

I mean I probably wouldn’t return either. Regardless of whether she’s being unreasonable or not. It’s just a dogpile now and whatever she says will be ripped to pieces.

Is there any wonder? Entitled mother lets her kid bother someone doing their job multiple times, then kid kicks off and mother blames the poor sod who was being bothered in the first place.

This can’t be real 😂😂😂

I was ignoring my child today and she was repeatedly in the way of someone trying to some maintenance work. Fixed your post for you.

Quite, although the answer was in the post title: manoeuvred my 3 year old out of the way. Wouldn't have happened if the child wasn't IN the way in the first place.

Ooo I do love a unanimous thread. It restores my faith in humanity.

Fundays12 · 20/03/2026 12:32

The maintenance man had to do this because you didnt. It wasnt a safe place for a small child to stand. Start parenting and keep your young child next to you so you are keeping them safe rather than some other adult around having to do it for you.

This is exactly it.

ilovepixie · 20/03/2026 12:46

Why were you not parenting your child? Do you not remember James Bugler?

Pushmepullu · 20/03/2026 13:04

Went to a cafe/restaurant place for Mother’s Day. A couple with 2 children came in. The boy, who was around 4 yo proceeded to climb on the bench that ran the length of the place, and run up and down. Parents totally ignored him. An older woman pointed out to him that he might fall over, parents gave her a right earful. It was none of her business, if he fell off the bench it was the cafes fault! The girl was twirling around other people’s chairs and at times not in sight of the parents. This was in St Albans and the parents were clearly affluent, and so assume educated, but their lack of awareness of what their kids were getting up to was astounding.
