to hate the way the chefs on Masterchef always say 'plate of food' instead of just 'food' or 'dish'?
I HATE IT.

A few years ago there was some football tournament on (Euros, maybe) and none of the pundits could say 'the game' - it had to be 'the game of football'. They were saying it incessantly and it was oddly annoying. Haven't noticed it recently.

nomas · 19/03/2026 21:21

YANBU. it’s filler language because they have to say the same old crap over and over again.

That was a super fast deletion. Love it 🤣

8 had to switch womans hour earlier because the guest kept saying ' if that makes sense?' after every sentence. So annoying

I heard that today! She said it almost after every sentence. Why would her banal, normal sentences not make sense. She wasn't describing nuclear fission.

I don’t watch Masterchef, but I feel your pain with sports commentators who feel the need to say ‘years of age’ all the time e.g “she’s 35 years of age”. It’s 35, she’s 35 ffs!

Yes!! Drives me mad. They also say 'at this moment in time'. It's now ffs. Using more words doesn't make you sound intelligent.

Watch the Historical Masterchef on Horrible Histories (think they are on Youtube). Totally takes the piss out of the "plate of food" and also the way that Greg Nonce and John Torrode would eat the food.

So glad I wasn’t the only one

What's wrong with saying a plate of food?
Unless they are serving it in a bowler hat 🤣🤣

Alan Shearer, for years, was incapable of saying ‘the club’ and could only say ‘the football club’ which for some reason enraged me.

Drippingfeed · 19/03/2026 22:45

You were annoyed, not "triggered" fgs. Use the term properly or not at all.

There are other terms that exist, such as hyperbole for the figurative expression of a strong feeling.

Grandmashorty · 19/03/2026 23:11

I noticed this and it annoyed me too. A nice dessert was labelled as a plate of food - no, it’s a small dessert!

Me too on the Woman’s Hour ‘does that make sense’ rage! I know shouting at the radio is a cliche but I was that person today.

Just had a watch, so funny! I love the horrible histories / ghosts shows but had completely missed this.

I am eagerly awaiting the Ghosts film, although experience tells me that films of sitcoms rarely work out so I am hoping that this is one the rare exceptions! Also, have you seen Bill by the same team? Very very underated and brilliant!

Masterchef in the 90s used dish, dessert, main, starter, pudding, side, food, meal...... 'plate of food' is pretentious and just sounds silly. It's like saying 'glass of beverage'.

I'm looking forward to it too, really hope that it works and isn't a let down. Going to give Bill a watch too, thank you for the reccomendation.

Yeah I shouted and then switched it off, I thought I was tetchy but seemingly not

The S&B forum toffs on here get me with their “pieces”. “I need to get some new pieces for the summer.”

No, you need to get clothes mate, you know T-shirts, shorts and whatever else. Pretentious wankery.
