to hate the way the chefs on Masterchef always say 'plate of food' instead of just 'food' or 'dish'?
I HATE IT.

I also don’t like the expression "a wine" or "a few wines" or "a tea".
Illogical because I don’t mind "a beer" or "a few gins" or "a coffee" 🤷‍♀️

As it happens, I am actually a chef 😄 (true)

Well, there you go, not gonna argue with a chef, lol

Lol I have worked with chefs for years and they have all said the same thing, that they were trained to do it and why!

I makes no logical sense given you just move your hand, as I do and the salt (or any other condiment/spice/herbs are distributed bettter.

It's 'alleged' if the case hasn't gone to court yet. Legally, the media has to say that if it's still at the allegation stage.

The perpetrator is alleged, but the victim is a victim, no matter if the wrong person has been charged. I suppose it's the way it's presented though "the alleged victim of Mr X" would be correct, but the "alleged victim of being pushed down the stairs" wouldn't be, if someone has been pushed down the stairs there's nothing alleged about it.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 21/03/2026 09:16

Aaaaaand another one. When the contestants all go "oui chef". Marcus and Mon and even Torode ok, but Gregggggggg and Matt aren't chefs.(someone will now rock up and say Matt is. He's isnt now) And professional chefs do it, but why do the muggle contestants do it?

That is true to a certain extent, but...
The victim is only a victim if we know for certain that somebody, known or unknown, pushed them down the stairs, to use that example. If there is a possibility they were not pushed, but simply fell, then they remain the 'alleged victim'.

When the term 'alleged' is used in, for example, the 'alleged victim of an assault', it means that it has not yet been proven that an assault took place.

My apologies, my first response which I can't edit, misunderstood. Yes, they shouldn't be using 'alleged' in conjunction with an action, like 'pushed' or 'stabbed'.

I don't know much about John and Matt other than what I've just Googled, but I don't see why John still counts and Matt doesn't.
Not "rocking up" to start an argument, just curious to know what the distinction between them is.

financialcareerstuff · 21/03/2026 10:25

Oh I have a gentle defence for ‘plate of food’ - I think that is meant to encapsulate not just the food, but the plating/aesthetic- overall dish, which they are judged for…. Maybe? The problem with these things is once you have heard them you can’t unhear them! I’d never particularly noticed this before. But it will probably bug me now! 😆

DisabledDemon · 22/03/2026 22:44

I hate 'Enjoy', as if I were being ordered to enjoy whatever's been placed in front of me. I'll decide whether or not I've enjoyed it and if I haven't, you'll soon know!

8 had to switch womans hour earlier because the guest kept saying ' if that makes sense?' after every sentence. So annoying

Half the posters on MN do that, even after a perfectly clear sentence.
'I have a daughter who's six and she goes to ballet twice a week, if that makes sense.'

Actually true, John was "just" a cook too.

Some people trigger me (Chris Mason, Laura Kuessenburg, Peter Levy to name a few BBC news ones). They make my finger viciously stab the tv remote control pretty darn quick.

That’s one of those tedious British class indicators that shouldn't matter but do to people like me, however hard I try not to let it!

Not MS but I watched 30 seconds of Megan's cookery show . She had friends sitting round the kitchen as she baked etc.
One sampled some cake or pudding and did the over exaggerated Mmmm face where the eye brows go up , the mouth curves up , shoulders rise and there's an OMG this is the most delicious thing EVER look
Totally false and OTT and FGS woman you're an adult . (And it's only a bit of bloody sponge cake )
