to hate the way the chefs on Masterchef always say 'plate of food' instead of just 'food' or 'dish'?
I HATE IT.

There's a utuber who's been doing visiting holocaust locations and in one instead of saying house he says ouse and my teeth grate every time he does it

My peeve is when something is described as “pan fried”. What else is it going to be fried in? A washing up bowl? 🤣

To be fair, I think it's intended to distinguish it from food that's been deep-fried. But I think it's only really necessary to make that distinction when it's something that could easily be cooked either way, like chicken or a fillet of cod. 'Pan-fried' definitely feels redundant when it's, eg, bacon or some carrots.

While we're here "mouth feel" can do one! "The tapioca pearls have a lovely mouth feel" 😂
And they put their fingers bloody everywhere! That venison could be dusted for fingerprints, mate!
And it takes so long to 'plate up', that half the food must be stone cold before it gets sampled. And I bet they're not gonna zap in the micro-wah-vay for 30 seconds!

'Mouth feel' makes me want to heave

Yes I wonder about the temperature, its rested, its been fingered and fiddled with, its been rolled on the jay cloth. Its now stone cold.

Please leave Jay cloth Rayner out of this, he's great 😊

I could never watch Mastermind with Magnus Magnusson because of the way he said 'correct'. Was like nails down a blackboard.

Funny what comes along that annoys us for no good reason!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 20/03/2026 14:29

The phrase thats getting on my tit's atm is when a crime against a person has been committed, and someone charged, they say the "alleged victim". They are the victim. That's it.

Ooops, I had that with Countdown, "vowel, vowel, continent, vowel, continent". My gran and I used to throw stuff at them.

Sausagenbacon · 20/03/2026 14:36

What triggers me is the shot of an octopus tentacle being smacked on a hot grill in the intro.
Eating octopus is wrong, morally, but it also looks disgusting.

Edited

I’m actually scared to eat octopus. I envision the suckers sucking onto my tongue. 🤢

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/03/2026 14:48

For cookery programmes it's always "my shepherd s pie" or "my coffee and walnut cake". What have they done to make it "my"?
And when someone being interviewed starts very bloody sentence with "So"

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 20/03/2026 14:49

I agree OP. My eldest DD hates it when my DH says the "meal table" when it's not just a dining table, it's my desk too 😅

Teaming a bootcut jean with a low heeled boot and a red lip. So half dressed then?

I'm just waiting for a tight!

A knicker?

Haha even better! Or maybe an underpant!

Graceyfields · 20/03/2026 15:00

Pollinators all the time. I know it’s correct but just say bees

frostynicks · 20/03/2026 15:01

I hate how they say ‘it eats well’ makes my teeth itch.

Hapax · 20/03/2026 15:21

Agree with whoever queried food having things 'running through' it. Nobody said this until 5 minutes ago.

Also mouth feel sounds like a niche porn category.

Thing is, I could see that happening.

Haven't seen MS lately, but when it was John and Greg, John used to annoy me when he would say something like "you need to impress Greg and I".

Graceyfields · 20/03/2026 15:00

Pollinators all the time. I know it’s correct but just say bees

Lots of other insects are considered as important as bees for various types of important food pollination (and do a large percentage of all pollinating). Bees are not the only pollinators.

NotAWurstToIt · 19/03/2026 21:37

I don’t watch Masterchef, but I feel your pain with sports commentators who feel the need to say ‘years of age’ all the time e.g “she’s 35 years of age”. It’s 35, she’s 35 ffs!

In fairness in the context there's understood ellipsis in "she's 35". It could be years of age or stone in weight or inches tall.

RawBloomers · 20/03/2026 15:52

I find often repeated phrases annoying. I sort of see some sense in a show like master chef, where presentation is a huge part of the expectation, to emphasise that. Plating the food is how that’s normally termed so saying plate of food does fit in to the show’s ethos. But that probably doesn’t stop it grating!

Lillers · 20/03/2026 15:53

The one that’s bugging me at the minute is that they seem to all now be using “cook” as a noun: “This is a really important cook”, or “I really need to impress with the next cook.”
