To have been “racially” profiled by HR

Donotfitin · 16/03/2026 10:10

I don’t have a British name (like at all), so HR assumed I needed a right to work code, so asked for one, rather than asking if I was a citizen or not.

As a UK citizen I only need to provide my passport, so the whole thing took me completely by surprise!

Its the first time in my whole life that it was assumed that I wasn’t a citizen. I’ve

I've recently joined a new employer and as part of the onboarding process I was asked to share my QR code. I am also a British citizen and had to do this via the gov.uk app thing. I'd need to go back and check my emails to double check the wording used but was definitely asking to share a QR code.

If you could check that would be really good. It seems there are a few of us that recruit and aren't aware of this method.

CyclesPerfecta · 16/03/2026 16:38

I agree with you OP, this sounds like discrimination by perception.

Whyarepeople · 16/03/2026 16:38

WestEaste · 16/03/2026 16:36

Ok then, if you feel that way then refuse the job. Drama over.

If you genuinely feel you are being discriminated against then you should not take the job.

What a genius solution.

Feel discriminated against? Be unemployed! That'll solve all your problems.

Some of you are really tying yourselves in knots to deny the racial profiling here. It’s shameful.

Not quite. Unless you have worked in senior leadership positions within government, you won’t understand the true scale of incompetence at play. It’s well known that the government has issues retaining skilled staff, and that performance is poor within government. Hence the move to cutting the workforce, redundancies, performance measures and bonuses. It doesn’t necessarily mean government employees are racist on the whole, just that the poor culture allows for oversights to be made.

Some places do this for ALL employees…. My work asked me and I’m a white British citizen.

I do some interviews and checks and have to ask everyone.

Thst sounds likely. When DH and I went to book our marriage, we took our British passports, birth certificates, evidence that we’d never been outside London, our parentage etc. but they still needed to interview us as they couldn't interview one group and not another, as it was seen as ‘racist’. 🤷‍♀️.

It's likely because its correct.

Thats not what happened here though.

Interviewed when you got married or when you gave notice? Because most local authorities, if not all, in England require notice to be given face to face and it includes an interview - for everyone.

Well yes, they have to check everyone they employ is legally able to work in the UK. A white woman with a British sounding name could very well be from Australia, new Zealand, USA , South Africa, Germany etc etc.

It is a legal requirement. Absolutely nothing to do with your wedding and proving you 'have never been outside london' (what?)

Are you sure that wasn't for your DBS? I had to get a QR code for my enhanced DBS renewal a week or two ago.

SeaBaseAlpha · 16/03/2026 16:56

Re the QR codes - there is a new system in place that allows the employer to verify a British or Irish citizen's right to work via an electronic verification third party provider - anyone who is mentioning the QR codes is likely encountering an employer who is using one of these new systems. However, it's not mandatory, and provision of a copy of the passport is also a valid right to work document.

Which is NOT what happened here.. the OP was sent a link to the UKVI share code page which is very much for individuals with a visa or at best Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK. Very poor form on the employer's part and I honestly can't see any reason why it was done other than an assumption that she was not a British citizen.

FunMustard · 16/03/2026 16:57

Donotfitin · 16/03/2026 16:11

Asking for Right to Work is a must in any onboarding process.

However, the best practice is to be inclusive and give the options, rather than assume one option applies and not the other.

Yes I do realise that. I guess what I'm confused about is why you've posted this with the insinuation that it's a racist assumption borne out of discrimination?

You also haven't said what, if anything, you're going to do about it? Did you just post to generate discussion?

You’ve never been annoyed about something but not done anything about it? Or are you someone who complains every single time something annoys you?

It’s possible to be peeved a situation but decide the best way to handle is to say nothing. Doesn’t mean you can’t still be annoyed or have a little rant.

I wonder if some of the "no big deal" posters are getting confused because of this. They're thinking about some sort of QR code for everybody, when the OP is talking about a share code for foreigners (which is something many British citizens will never have heard of).

I'd never heard of share codes until - very ironic! - I moved into a new job recently and I now have to verify said share codes for foreign applicants.

Jeez what's got up your nose?

Quine0nline · 16/03/2026 17:08

The levels of incompetence in all levels are horrific. It could well be a xenophobic reaction to your name, but we'll never know.

Babe I was just asking what her reason was posting was, as she posted in AIBU like she wanted advice but her further posts seemed not to be about that. I really don't have a clue what you're reading into it.
