To have been “racially” profiled by HR

Donotfitin · 16/03/2026 10:10

I don’t have a British name (like at all), so HR assumed I needed a right to work code, so asked for one, rather than asking if I was a citizen or not.

As a UK citizen I only need to provide my passport, so the whole thing took me completely by surprise!

Its the first time in my whole life that it was assumed that I wasn’t a citizen. I’ve

It does sound like this was just based on your name and as you've said your cv doesnt show education/ work overseas it was obviously a silly assumption. Sounds like someone a bit stupid.

Can you tell me what about my OP made you think I wanted advice?

Because I didn’t!

Am I Being Unreasonable is a board that tends to be about asking questions?

I always see AIBU as the venting section.

Yes, what on earth about that posters reply made you think something "got up her nose"?

Totally read the MINE in a gaspy shocked dramatic voice with a hand theatrically clasped to your chest too 😂😂😂

more this tbh!

Oh fuck sake it didn't post. Was supposed to be this gif! https://tenor.com/en-GB/view/uhh-gif-17821337656428566158

Ok then, if you feel that way then refuse the job. Drama over.

If you genuinely feel you are being discriminated against then you should not take the job.

Maybe she is the right person for the job. Sometimes you need to be 'in' to purge the ignorance.

No babe, it’s not. I mean, it’s literally in the name - “Am I Being Unreasonable”.

In other words, something has happened, is my action / response / feeling unreasonable or not. Nothing about that is about asking for advice.

Because of the lady that keeps calling us “babes”?

This makes zero sense. Day 1 discrimination (as OP insists has occurred) would surely lead to further discrimination.

You’re always better off avoiding grievances, ACAS and employment tribunals in the first instance; instead of sticking it out and assuming you will magically “purge the ignorance” with no downsides in between.

Just because you haven't put a question mark on doesn't make it not a question!

Fine, I'm out. It was clearly unreasonable to be asking the OP that question.

Bit of a dramatic reply to that post 😂😂😂

It's the realisation that I'm being ridiculous, so now I'm moving to indignation 😂😂😂

Whether or not I put a question mark, the intention of the board is the same!

Even with a question mark, the board is not about asking advice. I mean, people can ask for advice if they want to but it’s not a pre-requisite for posting here!

AgualusasL0ver · 16/03/2026 17:40

I'm sorry this happened OP. These things are the micro-aggressions that many people don't see if they don't have a foreign sounding name, or look visibly different. Often there is no malice behind them, but it is exhausting.

I'm guessing your ideas on 'what makes sense' are quite limited.
Sometimes you take a job, run for office, join a board etc to 'make changes'.
Maybe OP has been headhunted as 'Head of Recruitment ', and item number 1 on her list is setting up a template to eliminate biases; as she's noticed straight away that having employees freestyle, is against standard practices.
There's a reason companies are keen to recruit women, different ethnicities, different sexual orientations etc... They need folks from different backgrounds and experiences to help change toxic or just plain stypid cultures.

I work in a similar role, and when checking Right to Work I have been guilty of looking at a name and assuming they’ll need a Share Code. We do get a lot of applicants who aren’t from the UK so…

so you're going to stop being racist, right?

No, you just sound uneducated and inexperienced. It is illogical to get racially profiled then assume the existing culture will allow you to successfully enact organisational-wide change. One person alone cannot drive cultural change.

If you had any experience in legal matters such as employment tribunals, you would understand the advice to not get into such situations to begin with. There’s no trophy that comes in enduring apparent illegal treatment for the sake of enacting culture change.

If OP was hired in some sort of change capacity to enact that and remove racial bias across the organisation, they wouldn’t have experienced “racial profiling” to begin with frankly.

SockPlant · 16/03/2026 18:00

dunroamingfornow · 16/03/2026 15:08

We’re required to complete a specific form and ask every successful job applicant to prove their right to work including evidence of their code ( where applicable). This has been standard for years now

another one for the "complete and utter inability to read and understand the issue"

And you work in recruitment? blimey

Yeah, because it's entirely impossible for her to be racially profiled just by the idiot who sent the email.

The OP said it wasn't an automated email, but one sent by an imbecile, who may or may not represent the entire organisation.

If the job and the terms are favourable, why should OP be deterred by one idiot?

Am I Being Racist, Babes??

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 16/03/2026 19:23

My work asks everyone this. Even if the name is Jones, their Dad was Jones, their Mum was Jones and their entire family can be traced back to Owain Glyndwr.
