AIBU?

Share your dilemmas and get honest opinions from other Mumsnetters.

To be annoyed by the volume of deleted comments which are merely mildly provocative or robustly stating an opposing opinion, rather than being unacceptably rude or offensive?

NOT a TAAT.

Does anyone else find it highly irritating when threads end up having more holes than Swiss cheese due to so many posts having been deleted?

Much of the time the person at whom the contentious comment was aimed has replied (obviously before the deletion) in a manner that suggests they weren't in the least offended or bothered by it - but now you can no longer see what they were responding to.

It sometimes feels a bit like being back at school, with everyone running to the teacher and gleefully exclaiming, "Reported!" as if they're going to earn a gold star for doing so.

It's not actually injurious to one's health to be mildly ruffled by someone having a different opinion or viewpoint on a particular topic, as happens all the time in real life.

I may be an outlier here, and am happy to accept that if it's the case, but I'm curious to know how others feel.

What innocuous posts do you think have been deleted then? For each post that's been deleted, it's because it's been reported to MNHQ, who then make the decision whether or not to delete. They only delete if they think there's a good reason.

Notmymarmosets · 29/03/2026 11:22

I was deleted last night. It was one sentence saying it sounded like the OP didn't like her husband and was there any point in continuing to be with him. Gone! But I stand by my observation.

I think this happens a lot. I was reading a thread yesterday where even though the OP was interacting with this poster and clearly not at all offended by what had been written, all the posts were deleted - it just ruins the whole thread.

I really wish they’d put their energy into banning the prolific, name changing poster on AIBU who posts the most controversial, goady made up crap. I now spend half my life hiding threads.

Edited

I think in this situation, the deletion message should reflect that the account has been deleted. The poster I think you're referring to had posted a lot on multiple threads and all were deleted, so the threads were full of holes. Maybe a PBP, but other posters were engaging with their comments and there was nothing to suggest they were all offensive.

bigboykitty · 29/03/2026 11:28

A lot of deletions are for troll hunting. People seem to find it hard to grasp that if you don't think a poster is genuine, you need to report.

Well they have been deleted now so…

Surely you have come across threads where even the OP is flummoxed as to why the heck posts were deleted?

This has been deleted by MNHQ for breaking our Talk Guidelines.

Janesput · 29/03/2026 19:26

I think a lot of the deletions are people who have multiple accounts or have broken guidelines some other way, so all their comments have been removed. It's not necessarily that the comment in question was a problem.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

It's clear (and I started a thread about this a while ago) that reading comprehension is poor, and unfortunately I don't think the mods are immune to this.

I'll repeat my example of starting a thread to seek advice on how to debunk an anti-vax video. This led to the thread being deleted and me being suspended as I was supposedly spreading anti-vaxxing propaganda which was literally the opposite of what I was trying to do (and yes, this was clearly stated in the OP, but if you can't comprehend properly, then...).

I agree. It’s hard to follow some threads because of so many deletions, and when I’ve returned to a thread - I have seen posts deleted that I recall as being completely - well, harmless.
