Foul language on here.

AIBU to expect people to use less foul language on here. I’m put off by people using c , f.
Im not a prude and believe me there is many a time I’ve used the F word in conversations but wouldn’t dream of using it on here and never the c word.
Edited as deleted the asterisks - obviously doesn’t like them.

"Foul"? In your opinion.

Mistybluebay · 15/03/2026 14:09

They’ve asked if you can articulate why you feel this way. You have basically just reiterated that you don’t like it. The question is why don’t you like it?

I don't like it because I associate it with anger and aggression. I'm 56, from a WC background and the only time I ever heard it when I was young was from deeply unpleasant angry men and the bullies at school. It reminds me of road rage, the mouthing off between men before a fight starts and the rough kids at school who'd graffiti it onto desks.
I get times have changed, but and it's more widespread now, but I still don't hear it often. I work in a reasonably sweary office, but the only time I've ever heard it was when someone chose it deliberately to emphasise how awful a clients partner was (DV case) and apologised but said they had no other word for him. So, selected for extreme meaning rather than casually dropped.
There is obviously no rational reason for disliking a word, but associations persist.

Shade17 · 15/03/2026 14:21

How dare these fucking cuntweasels use such cunting bad language! Shitcan the fucking lot of them!

MargoylesofBeelzebub · 15/03/2026 14:27

Swearing, on Mumsnet? Fucking hell!

If a student uses those words at school they go to isolation. But seeing how widely used they are on here, I can only assume it’s picked up from home. It’s very hicky and not respectful. If teenagers swear at school I remind them that most adults do not expect this sort of language, so keep it for home. And then I database. And I database over and over again. So when parents are complaining, just imagine what’s written all over their students database. I have to say most students apologise immediately and realise how inappropriate it is.

Strange way to describe giving them a Behaviour Point for swearing/inappropriate language.

Anyhow, there's a world of difference between a kid swearing in your presence and swearing at you.

I don’t have those associations, but that makes perfect sense to me.

Exactly this. Frankly, OP, no one gives a toss if you’re offended by swearing. You don’t matter to a bunch of anonymous strangers.

You have two options. You can either accept that MN allows swearing and get on with it, making your own choice to not swear, or you can decide you can’t accept it and leave. There is no option three where people or the site’s policies will change to suit you.

This.

Wellfuckme · 15/03/2026 14:41

Wonders if need to change username - nah fuck that. I am an adult and will swear if I want to 😂

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 15/03/2026 14:42

Oh great, yet another one of these threads from a pearl clutcher 🙄
Look love, there are loads of forums out there, perhaps you need to find one that you find less offensive. Good luck finding one that no-one swears on though. Fuck I bet that's hard 🤔

Waxwinged · 15/03/2026 14:45

You might be happier on a board I was on years ago dedicated to discussion of the Chalet School books. It auto-corrected anything it considered 'bad language', which meant that every time 'Scunthorpe' appeared (it was a board where your geographical location appeared under your username when you posted, and one of the regulars was from Scunthorpe), it autocorrected it to something ridiculous.

Back when MNet were surrounded by fields and we had MeetUps: Mrs Danvers, BIWI, FrankWhippery, Hearts, Zombie, BBB, SolodGoldBrass, You bad bad kitten, Porto, HullyGully, GetOrf, Dancing, etc, somebody had a shedload of "Atrocious Cunt" badges made. Those were the days.

@Lemondrizzle4A I do see where you are coming from and the gratuitous fould language IS off but used with humour, or in the right context, I think it's OK.

God, that all takes me back! You bad bad kitten, HullyGully and GetOrf particularly.

Sorry to break it to you OP but a recent study has found that people who swear in general conversation LIVE LONGER!

Not the sweary name callers - they get to die as soon as everyone else - but those of us who merrily shed daily stresses by peppering our sentences with a few fucks and the odd shit?....

....Yup, we're counteracting those minutes lost by eating bacon by literally GIVING FUCKS!

Feels good.

It's a Fucking Cunt- Fest on here !!😁

Devilsmommy · 15/03/2026 15:38

Badlifeday · 15/03/2026 11:17

Too many foul-mouthed cunts on here, that's for sure.
Most unladylike

The problem is when the OP has done a whole post about what a twat her DH is and obviously you have to tell her that he's quite obviously a cunt🤷

Mumteedum · 15/03/2026 15:44

I've been on here for at least 15 years. There's always been some healthy Anglo Saxon usage. YANBU to dislike it. YABU to have expectations of other people's usage.

I'm not a fan of littering every sentence with it in conversation. I don't mind it on here. It's quite cathartic.

Eg... Saying Nigel Farage can get to fuck, feels entirely healthy and reasonable. Saying 'i went to the fucking pub and had a fucking amazing meal' is just a waste. Needs to be used for emphasis or it loses impact. Grin

ThatBlackCat · 15/03/2026 15:47

YANBU about the 'c' word. That is a sexist misogynist slur so I am stunned that women are using it. YABU about fuck word though.

EveryKneeShallBow · 15/03/2026 16:18

In Scotland the word cunt has very little to do with misogyny usually. It is rarely registered as swearing. It’s just punctuation.

Mumteedum · 15/03/2026 16:23

@EveryKneeShallBow not sure if it is swearing but I always enjoyed the use of Bawheed when I lived up there 😆

It isn’t any different from calling someone a dick or a bellend, and it’s applicable to both sexes.

It’s fine if you don’t want to use it, of course. But you can’t expect everyone to have the same subjective opinion on what it implies.

Interestingly, nobody who insists that ‘cunt’ is a misogynist slur ever seems to have the same reaction to the word ‘twat’ which means exactly the same thing.

I would certainly consider myself a feminist and I happily use the word ‘cunt’ - as an insult, as an ironic term of endearment, and as my preferred bedroom term for the body part in question.

I think it’s only really in America that it sometimes gets used in a misogynist way, but it’s used much more rarely there in general.

ParmaVioletTea · 15/03/2026 16:41

Fucking bloody hell. MN has always been a collection of cunts.

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 15/03/2026 16:42

I agree with you, OP.

Each to his or her own.

ParmaVioletTea · 15/03/2026 16:43

And I learned the great acronym ODFOD here. As well as the wonderful phrase: Fuck off to the far side of fuck and then fuck off some more.

Highly cathartic. Thank you, vipers!
