AIBU to leave tonight after husband's texting and driving tantrum?

Justinbimber · 14/03/2026 18:10

My husband is slamming around the house and doing his aggressive “tidy up” routine because I said he shouldn’t text and drive.

We were in the car with his son (6). I said “if you keep texting and driving you’ll end up with 3 points, or worse”

He replied he always did it and why mention it now? Then he said it’s alright for me because I don’t drive so I can relax and go on my phone whenever I want.

He then threw his phone at the dashboard, and drove 50+ in a 30 zone for about 10 minutes. I was gripping my seat

He already drives under the influence of cannabis (everyday). I will not get in the car with him on these days.

Aibu to pack my bags and leave tonight? I’m sick of it all, whenever I bring up a slight criticism (?) it ends with these escalated moods and tension. His son is clinging to me since we got home which is unusually for him

Leave definitely

Iamsotiredandfedup · 14/03/2026 18:12

You’d be unreasonable to stay to be honest

Easterbunnygettingawrapping · 14/03/2026 18:12

When my exh drove similar and I genuinely feared for our lives (dc in the car) I filed for divorce the next day..

SunMoonandChocolate · 14/03/2026 18:13

First post nails it OP! You'd be mad to stay with a man like this. I'd also report him to the police for driving under the influence of drugs.

pippapipps · 14/03/2026 18:15

I’d be worried about his ds is he safe with him? Does he have him at weekends?

Smartiepants79 · 14/03/2026 18:16

Can you wait til his son goes home safe to his mother? Does his mother know that he behaves like this when in charge of their child??
But definitely get the hell out!

TheCurious0range · 14/03/2026 18:16

Can you tell the child's mother? I'd want to know if someone was driving under the influence and speeding with my child in the car

Yes, leave.

Also report his driving under the influence to police online via your forces 101 online service. Give them the number plate, his details and his routine ie driving to woke every day and via what route (or whatever he does when high). Let them pick him up if they can. It may not work but worth a go.

What a prick. When they are slamming objects around like this, the next step is hitting people.

andanotherproblem · 14/03/2026 18:17

I would report him to the police myself

4wardlooking · 14/03/2026 18:17

@Justinbimber absolutely leave, go get yourself someone civilised to date.

Or you could put up with this and waste your entire life.

PurpleLovecats · 14/03/2026 18:18

Yup I’d end a relationship for that. Also notify the police if you know he’s getting in the car under the influence of cannabis. Tell his ex too so she doesn’t unwittingly put her son in danger.

AsparagusSeason · 14/03/2026 18:18

I’m surprised you’re even asking. He’s clearly a complete twat. Leave and don’t look back.

Gawdimold · 14/03/2026 18:20

He’s a prick

ProfessorInkling · 14/03/2026 18:20

Why haven't you left already?

youalright · 14/03/2026 18:22

Yes leave and tell ds mum

FeelingSadToday1 · 14/03/2026 18:22

Absolutely leave. I’d report to the police once you were safe too

Italiangreyhound · 14/03/2026 18:22

Leave.

Anonymously report him.

Tell his ex what's happening with her child. He sounds like an utter moron.

CleanSkin · 14/03/2026 18:25

Lets see…
Dangerous? ☑️
Selfish? ☑️
Arrogant? ☑️
Illegal? ☑️
Abusive? ☑️
Not to mention that he is clearly terrifying his son with his driving, behaviour & words.
Yeah, I don’t think you’re being unreasonable to leave him - but please stay until you have handed that vulnerable, scared little 6 yo boy back to his Mummy.

Perhaps you could say something to her re the event, as he is likely to be upset, tearful, and may try to explain what his father did. If she contacts the father as a result then he will potentially be angrier and more abusive to you.
Do you have a safe space to go to?

AmazingGreatAunt · 14/03/2026 18:29

Look, I passed my driving test in 1976, I have had a text-enabled phone since 1995.
There is no reason at all to try and read or send a text message when you are sitting behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.
I was able to slot my old Nokia phone into a dedicated area in my car. I could control it via the steering wheel. During that time I made 1 call and received 1 call, which made me lose my turn off.
The call I received and answered was at least 15 years ago, so since then, and thanks to different technology, I have never even thought about making or receiving calls when driving, much less sending a text.
If either of the above are REALLY necessary, you pull over at the next, safe opportunity.
I do not think you should leave, wait until things have calmed down a bit and try some reasoning without overt blame.

Pepperedpickles · 14/03/2026 18:31

Drop his son off back to his mum. Report him to the police for drug use and dangerous driving. He’s an absolute idiot. Can’t stand people who use their mobiles whilst driving.

LadyTable · 14/03/2026 18:32

Why in God's name do you have to turn to an internet forum to ask complete strangers if you should leave?

You can leave any time you want for any reason you want.

ThePerfectWeekender · 14/03/2026 18:32

Why the fuck would you get in a car with someone deiving under the influence? and with a child! Report him to the police.

ArtAngel · 14/03/2026 18:44

Well, you were in the car with him, knowing that he drives under drug influence every day.

Yes, leave him, BUT you must tell the child's mother what happened and that he smokes and drives when he has his child, drives at 50mph in 30mph areas and texts while driving her child. You have a responsibility to tell her that before the next time your DH would drive the child anywhere.

He is dangerous, stupid and emotionally abusive.

allthingsinmoderation · 14/03/2026 18:46

Leave this dangerous,irresponsible ,unkind man......
Report his driving under the influence to the police in order to protect his son,the public and him.....
