CA schools banning Cheetos?

YourPinkHedgehog · 14/03/2026 17:49

Hey I'm just wondering has your school started banning cheetos? Or anything that has food dyes? I saw this article and I am wondering if it has been enacted or enforced and if it's for students, faculty, all parent visitors?

Does that mean we can get a citation for having Doritos at school? Like similar to smoking near children, at the park, school is likely an infraction of the law?

Unfortunately, there are too many high level BMI individuals working at schools setting a bad example. But they just hide behind fat shaming, or there is this social norm we can't make a 40 year old adult stop eating McDonanlds or Oreos. Like somehow they should still have dignity even if they are 400 lb and can't get out of bed, or use a rascal. Like come on, how are kids going to be D1 athletes if school staff are like 300 lb McDonald or donut addicts? But they will get mad if a kid brings weed to school, but won't have the same standard if a 300lb balding man is teaching PE then goes to KFC after work. Like maybe it should be fine if they are 300 lb but they must be on a strict diet mandated by government officials.

Some moms even still eat fries and drink strawberry lemonade, which should be considered like child abuse. If eating doritos and donuts as a teacher in front of kids is socially acceptable, then I want to start smoking cigarettes in front of kids and not be judged

I saw a youtube video of a fitness guy protesting curmbl cookie and so many parents say it's for their kids. Then one day, I'm going to buy beer and cigarettes for a 5 year old and say it's for my kids and I don't want to be judged for it.

Some of the food dyes being banned in California have been banned for years in the UK. I don't know why Americans think it's ok to pump their kids full of chemicals that are banned in many countries.

And don't forget they bleach their chickens.

Nobody can resist licking that off.

Are Cheetos the same as Cheesy Wotsits?

Pretty much so. We have them here in the UK too - they are often cheaper than wotsits.

... the hell is a 'Shamrock Shake'?

Anyway OP, 7/10, this is a pretty good effort, I'll admit.

Your typical American who is obese and isn't planning to change their ways isn't going to eat a Big Mac once a month. They will claim, "mind your business" or "I'm an adult" or "I'm stressed out and don't have time".

It's a yearly green shake that McDonalds serves in March for St Patrick Day. It's a themed drink.

Let me guess, its not spinach or kale - probably an E no.

I wondered the same thing.

I think our Cheetos are different to us Cheetos as some of the colourings are banned in the U.K.

we do have packed lunch police in the U.K., it’s annoying but for children’s own good really.

The only foods not allowed in my GCs packed lunch are nuts or anything containing nuts . There is no policing of anything else , they are at a school in the UK

They sound like an American? Whats a CA school? Whats a D1 athlete?
And I don’t know any uk person who says ‘mom’
Maybe the poster can give us some background info on this?

CA is California. D1 athlete is highest level of college based athlete in USA. Division 1. I don't fully understand it but it's the highest level of amateur athletes, the next leve is becoming a professional athlete.

The USA and the UK - two countries separated by a common language 😀

And by food. Don't forget the food.

Yes I am in USA. I am not aware if this forum is UK based. I assumed every internet forum was based from USA, but I guess "mumt" is suppose to be British way to say mom.

I heard UK had high obesity rate, but USA takes the crown for highest obesity rate and I was part of it.

Edited

surely this isn’t real? Nobody can actually believe every internet forum is based in the USA?? 🤣

Really? Ours and local ones are all awful for it. It makes it easier with kids not getting jealous etc but no crisps, no chocolate / biscuit bars - or cakes that could be thought of as chocolate bars. Even cakes are a bit iffy.

Our cousins over the Pond can be very insular, & sometimes quite ignorant.

I have been clean from McDonalds for about one week now.

Go and have a look on threads. It’s been eye opening to what some Americans believe.

Thornrose · 14/03/2026 19:32

Ah, there's something about this thread that makes me feel nostalgic.

It reminds me of MN 10 years ago. 😁

Teachers don't eat in front if kids and if they ever did would not eat banned crisps in front of them

in the uk kids are generally not allowed any form of crisps chocolate
its all fruit raisins caroot sticks etc

i smoked but was a successful health teacher
i am fat but a exercise and a great role model in lots if other ways
i eat unhealthy food in my office but can still encourage kids to do better

in many ways I encourage my own , and my school kids to be healthier and better than me

Whatnameisif · 14/03/2026 19:42

I don't understand what you're trying to say but a) banning Cheetos for kids sounds like a good thing, b) there are plenty of things which adults do that children shouldn't be doing, c) maybe read Ultra-Processed People?

My kid get a packet of crisps and a chocolate mini role everyday in his pack lunch (alongside sandwiche, fruit & veg sticks). It's never been a problem with the school. In fact one time my kids mixed up their lunches and DS ended up with DD's oreos instead of the his usual mini role (which he doesn't like) the lunch lady gave him a piece of flapjack, so he wasn't missing out on pudding.

The only thing you're not allowed to send is actually sweets or chocolate bars, though they come out with haribo every time someone has a birthday, so even that rules not absolute.

Tbf if you’re referring to Red 40 that’s not true. We just call it something else.

I mean, I know MN is online and therefore by definition international, but OP, have you considered looking for a US-based and oriented parenting forum? Most posters here won't understand what a '300lb donut addict' actually looks like, in terms of overweight-ness! As others have pointed out, UK and EU food regs are often very different from US ones in terms of what they'll allow, so there isn't a lot of common ground here.

300lb is 140 kg or 21 stone, which is really an amateur fatty weight. Go and watch my 600lb life and you will see people between 600 and almost 900lb.
